The next four in Box Office Watch’s ranking are The Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer and Inception. These are nominal worldwide grosses—not inflation-adjusted totals or measures of profit—and the figures can change as reporting is updated.

The ranking below follows the 13-film Nolan filmography listed by Box Office Watch. Its rounded worldwide theatrical-gross figures were accessed on October 8, 2026.

Box Office Watch’s figures are rounded. Box Office Mojo’s Nolan comparison, accessed October 8, 2026, lists The Odyssey at $1,768,084,090, The Dark Knight Rises at $1,084,939,099 and Oppenheimer at $975,811,333 worldwide. Those more precise entries do not change the order shown above.
What the totals measure—and what they do not
These are reported worldwide theatrical grosses: ticket revenue attributed to a film across domestic and international markets. They are not domestic-only rankings, and they have not been adjusted for inflation. A nominal ranking compares the amounts reported in their respective release eras; an inflation-adjusted ranking would require applying a consistent method to every film, and the cited sources do not provide one.

Gross is also not studio profit. It is not the amount a filmmaker or studio keeps after cinemas’ shares, distribution costs, marketing and other expenses. Box Office Watch notes that its listed production budgets exclude marketing; dividing gross by a reported production budget therefore does not establish profit.
Why The Odyssey’s exact total varies by source
The Odyssey’s position at the top is clear in the current lists, but the exact total depends on the source and snapshot. Box Office Watch displays a rounded $1.77 billion, while Box Office Mojo’s Nolan comparison gives $1,768,084,090. Both pages were accessed October 8, 2026.

Universal Pictures’ September 12, 2026 article has an internal discrepancy: its headline and opening sentence say the film surpassed $1.677 billion, while a later sentence gives a weekend total of $601.2 million domestic plus $1.083 billion international, or $1.685 billion worldwide. Because those figures conflict within the same article, it is safer to use the rounded database figure for this ranking than to present one exact official total as uncontested.
The Associated Press reported $1.4 billion on August 23, 2026, while describing the film as Nolan’s career leader. That earlier dated figure is a snapshot from before later reporting, not a like-for-like update to the September and October totals.

After Inception, Box Office Watch’s next entries by worldwide gross are Interstellar ($642.5 million), Dunkirk ($527.1 million), Tenet ($365.3 million), Batman Begins ($356.8 million), Insomnia ($114.0 million), The Prestige ($104.4 million), Memento ($39.7 million) and Following ($0.2 million). These are the source’s rounded figures, accessed October 8, 2026. Box Office Mojo separately shows an Interstellar 2023 re-release row in its comparison, a reminder that re-release accounting can affect how a title’s total is displayed.

This list uses Box Office Watch’s 13-film director filmography spanning 1999 to 2026. A ranking based on a different definition—such as excluding early features or including films Nolan produced but did not direct—could have a different scope. The figures here should therefore be read as a comparison of the films in that published filmography, not every movie associated with him in any capacity.
