They were presented as a pair but sold as two separate lots, so the record refers to their combined auction results—not a single lot or a confirmed record for every private sale.
How much did the Apollo and Artemis earrings sell for?
Sotheby’s reports a combined result of US$57,425,478, or CHF57,118,750, for the two stones. The blue Apollo diamond sold for US$42,087,302, and the pink Artemis diamond sold for US$15,338,176. Those individual results add up to the published combined total. Sotheby’s account of the sale identifies the pair as the most valuable earrings ever sold at auction.
The sale took place in Geneva in May 2017. Although the diamonds had been mounted as earrings and were presented together, Sotheby’s offered them in separate lots because of their exceptional rarity.

These were large fancy-color diamonds with different hues and grading characteristics. Sotheby’s later reports that Apollo was renamed The Memory of Autumn Leaves and Artemis The Dream of Autumn Leaves.

Does this mean they are the most expensive earrings in every sense?
No. The well-supported claim is narrower: Sotheby’s describes them as the most valuable earrings ever sold at auction. That is a record of public auction results, not proof that no private sale or undisclosed transaction has ever involved a higher price. The two stones were also sold as separate lots, even though they were presented as earrings.
Before the auction, Sotheby’s Worldwide Chairman of its International Jewellery Division, David Bennett, called them “by far the most important pair of earrings ever offered at auction.” That was his promotional assessment ahead of the sale, rather than an independent finding; the realized results came later.
