Andrew Perez reported in an August 21, 2024, Rolling Stone article republished by RSN that Mellon had given $125 million to MAGA Inc., Donald Trump’s primary super PAC, during the 2024 election cycle. That figure was a reported snapshot as of the article’s publication—not a current balance or a total independently reconciled here.
Who is Timothy Mellon?
Mellon is described in Perez’s report as an heir to the Andrew Mellon banking fortune. He is the donor at the center of the report about the financing of Trump-aligned outside political spending.
How much did Mellon reportedly give?
Perez reported that Mellon donated $125 million to MAGA Inc. during the 2024 election cycle as of August 21, 2024. The article estimated that this amounted to roughly half of the committee’s fundraising at that point. It also reported two $50 million gifts: one dated May 31, 2024, and another dated July 15, 2024. These are figures attributed to the article, not a separately verified or recalculated FEC total. Read the August 21, 2024, report republished by RSN.
Did the money go directly to Trump’s campaign?
No. The reported donations went to MAGA Inc., not directly to Trump’s authorized campaign committee. The Federal Election Commission describes MAGA Inc. as an “independent-expenditure only political committee, commonly referred to as a super PAC.” In the FEC’s explanation, independent expenditures are spending made independently of a candidate’s campaign; they are distinct from direct contributions to that campaign. See the FEC’s MUR 8090 First General Counsel’s Report.

How should the campaign-cash comparisons be read?
Perez’s August 2024 article compared Mellon’s reported donations with $128 million in Trump campaign cash and $99 million at the Republican National Committee. Those amounts are the article’s snapshot from that period. They should not be read as current balances, nor do they mean the super PAC donations were campaign cash. The recipient and reporting period matter: a super PAC’s fundraising is not the same thing as funds held by a candidate’s authorized committee.

The FEC’s MAGA Inc. committee overview displays financial coverage for a later period than the 2024 article. It is useful for looking up committee information, but later coverage cannot confirm or replace the article’s dated figures. The FEC also describes its campaign-finance data tools for searching candidate and committee information. The official materials cited here establish MAGA Inc.’s classification and provide lookup tools; they do not independently reconcile the reported $125 million total.
