Costco’s current U.S. signup offer includes a $20 Digital Costco Shop Card with a Gold Star membership—but the promotion is online-only. “In-store or online” describes where you can generally spend the Shop Card, not where you can sign up for this offer. To qualify, you must be a new member or have had no Costco membership of any kind in the previous 18 months, and you must enroll in auto-renewal at signup using an eligible card.
What Costco’s $20 membership offer includes
Costco’s U.S. Join Costco page advertises a $20 Digital Costco Shop Card with Gold Star membership. The reward is an emailed electronic gift card, not cash and not a discount applied to the membership fee.
Costco labels this promotion online-only. That restriction concerns enrollment in the offer. Once issued, the Shop Card can generally be used at Costco warehouses or online, subject to the card’s terms.
The current offer page captured on October 8, 2026, does not state a promotion end date or the membership fee in the available text. Check Costco’s live offer and membership terms before signing up if either figure affects your decision; do not assume a deadline or use an older price.

Who is eligible—and what you must do at signup
The offer is for new members and people who have not held a Costco membership in any capacity—Primary, Household, or Affiliate—during the previous 18 months. Costco states this restriction on its membership signup page.
You must also set up membership auto-renewal during signup. Costco’s current offer terms specify a Visa credit or debit card, or a Mastercard debit card, for that setup. If you do not meet the membership-history rule or do not enroll in auto-renewal with an eligible card at signup, the advertised terms do not establish that you qualify for the Shop Card.

Where and how you can use the Digital Shop Card
Costco describes a Digital Shop Card as an electronic gift card sent by email. Its Shop Card FAQs say digital cards can be used at Costco locations and online at Costco.com and Costco.ca. They cannot be used at food-court kiosks.
For an online order, follow the checkout instructions shown for your account. Costco’s FAQ describes entering the Shop Card number and PIN, while its newer Costco Wallet FAQs say verified accounts must add a Shop Card to Costco Wallet to apply it online. Wallet also works at warehouse registers, so the available redemption flow may vary by account.

Costco says Shop Cards do not expire. They are non-refundable and cannot be redeemed for cash except where required by law.
What to check before enrolling
- Enrollment channel: Complete signup through Costco’s online offer; the promotion is not described as an in-warehouse signup offer.
- Membership history: Confirm that you have not had any Costco membership type in the last 18 months.
- Auto-renewal: Be prepared to enable it at signup using a Visa credit or debit card or Mastercard debit card.
- Offer details: Verify the live page for the membership fee, the current reward terms, and any end date, since the captured offer text does not establish those details.
- Reward timing and use: The advertised reward is an emailed Digital Shop Card. Review Costco’s card and checkout instructions for your account when it arrives.
Does the Executive offer make more sense?
The same Costco page captured on October 8, 2026, also advertises a $40 Shop Card with Executive membership. The available offer text does not establish the Executive membership fee or its full terms, so the $20 difference in advertised card value alone is not enough to show whether Executive is the better value.

Compare the live fees and requirements for both tiers, then consider whether Executive benefits suit your expected Costco spending. Do not treat the promotional card as a recurring membership discount or assume it makes up for a higher fee without checking the current terms.
