Ahmed Khattak says a difficulty he faced as a new arrival in the United States helped shape US Mobile: after moving from Pakistan for college in 2004, he struggled to get wireless service without a U.S. credit history or Social Security number. He built the company around a different idea from owning a nationwide radio network: software that could make service across existing networks more flexible. US Mobile’s public milestones trace that idea from an early customer base to a multi-network proposition and a Series A announcement.
Who is Ahmed Khattak?
US Mobile identifies Ahmed Khattak as its founder and CEO, and Michael Melmed as its COO on the company’s About page. Khattak’s account of the company’s beginnings is rooted in his own experience: he has said he moved from Pakistan to the United States for undergraduate study in 2004 and found it difficult to sign up for wireless service without the credit history or Social Security number carriers required.
In a 2025 interview, Khattak described the gap this way: “For a country where immigrants have had such a huge role to play, the wireless connectivity space just did not take that into consideration at all.” That is his characterization of the problem he encountered, not an independent finding about every carrier or every applicant’s experience.
How did Ahmed Khattak start US Mobile?
From an access problem to a product thesis
Khattak says that difficulty obtaining service prompted him to think beyond a conventional prepaid carrier. His proposed alternative was a software-led service using networks that already existed. In a 2025 CEO.com interview, he described the idea as “not another prepaid wireless carrier but an intelligent layer on top of these existing networks.” In a company post from 2017, he called it “a programmable intelligent layer for global access.”

The distinction matters: US Mobile’s proposition is access to major U.S. wireless networks through a service provider, not ownership of the underlying nationwide radio networks. Its company materials describe flexibility and network choice; they do not establish that every customer, device, plan, or location gets identical access or can switch under the same conditions.
The first reported milestone
In a 2017 launch post, US Mobile reported that it had reached nearly 40,000 customers in its first 24 months. Khattak connected the milestone to his own arrival, writing that it came “13 years after I landed in this country with $200 in my pocket, unable to sign up for wireless service because I was an immigrant with no credit history.” Both the customer count and the personal account are company-published statements; the figure is not an independently audited subscriber total.

The exact founding or incorporation date is not established by the available company and interview material. CEO.com’s 2025 account says the company had passed its ten-year mark, which offers reported context rather than a legal founding date.
How did US Mobile grow?
A broader network proposition
US Mobile’s model developed around giving customers a way to access and choose among major networks through one service provider. Khattak has presented the technical ambition as a programmable software layer spanning networks. This is a company proposition, not proof that US Mobile owns the networks or that the service has uniform coverage, features, switching rules, or compatibility across plans and devices.

For a consumer comparing providers, the useful questions are specific: which underlying network a plan uses, whether and how a customer may switch, what plan pricing and data rules apply, whether a particular device and feature are supported, and what support is available. The company’s general description does not answer all of those current, plan-level questions; check its current terms before relying on a particular detail.
Engineering and financing milestones
In a 2021 technology-focused post, US Mobile said its team had delivered more than 250 engineering releases in the preceding year. That is the company’s historical description of its development activity, rather than an independently assessed measure of product quality or performance.

Also in 2021, the company announced a Series A led by Volition Capital. The announcement identifies the lead investor but does not state the amount raised, valuation, or full investment terms. It is evidence of a financing milestone, not by itself a measure of the company’s market position.

A June 2025 CEO.com interview reported “over 1M subscribers historically” and 70% year-over-year growth in the context of Khattak and the company. The wording “historically” does not establish a current subscriber count, and the reviewed interview does not independently audit either figure. They should be read as dated founder- or company-reported context, not as confirmed current totals.

US Mobile’s company pages and founder interviews are useful for understanding how the company describes its mission, product model, and milestones. They do not, on their own, establish that it is the largest or best provider, demonstrate comparative service quality, or provide a matched independent comparison with other carriers or MVNOs.
What is the significance of Khattak’s story?
Khattak’s account connects a personal barrier—getting a phone line without an established U.S. credit profile—to a business thesis: make wireless access more modular by putting software and customer choice across existing networks. US Mobile’s early customer claim, subsequent engineering-release figure, and Series A announcement show how the company has presented its development over time. They document the company’s stated path, but they do not settle how its service compares with competitors or how well a specific plan will work for an individual customer.
