The closest answer with genre-level figures comes from audiobooks. The Audio Publishers Association (APA), in its 2026 report on 2025 sales, names general fiction, science fiction/fantasy, romance, mysteries/thrillers/suspense, and general nonfiction as the top genres by audiobook revenue. Even that list measures publisher revenue in one format, not what a typical author earns.
Why there is no single book genre leaderboard
Three widely cited data sets answer three different questions, and none of them can be merged into one ranking.

| StatShot annual report (calendar 2025, released 2026) | Association of American Publishers (AAP) | Total U.S. publishing revenue across formats and segments: $33.4 billion | Broad categories only, such as Trade consumer books ($21.7 billion) |
| Audiobook sales survey (2025 sales, released 2026) | Audio Publishers Association (APA), survey conducted by Toluna | Audiobook sales revenue: $2.43 billion, up 9% from 2024 | Share of audiobook revenue by genre |
| BookScan print tracking (2024 full year; 2025 year-to-date update through June) | Circana | U.S. print unit sales and growth rates | Genre-level units and growth, including romance and fantasy |
AAP’s broad categories show where the money sits at the top level. Adult fiction generated $7.1 billion and adult nonfiction $6.0 billion in 2025. Those are the largest genre-adjacent totals the association publishes, but they are not genre rankings. Fiction as a whole is not the same as romance, and nonfiction as a whole is not the same as business or health.
The five genres with the most audiobook revenue
The APA is the only source here that gives genre shares of revenue for a single format. General fiction is clearly first, at 27% of 2025 audiobook revenue. The release names the other four as leading genres but does not give their individual percentages, so the order of the rest cannot be confirmed from the published figures.

#1 Best Overall
| Genre (audiobooks) | Share of 2025 audiobook revenue | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General fiction | 27% (APA 2026 release) | Largest genre by revenue |
| Science fiction/fantasy | Not stated in the APA release | Named among the top genres by revenue |
| Romance | Not stated in the APA release | Named among the top genres by revenue |
| Mysteries/thrillers/suspense | Not stated in the APA release | Named among the top genres by revenue |
| General nonfiction | 9% (APA FAQ excerpt) | Taken from an excerpt of the APA FAQ rather than the full release, so treat it with more caution than the 27% figure |
Read this table as a list of leading audiobook genres, not a ranked top five for books overall. It covers one format, one country, and one year, and it measures sales revenue, not profit or royalties.
Print momentum: where romance and fantasy are growing
Print tells a different story from audiobooks. Circana does not publish genre revenue shares for print, so its figures measure units and growth rates. That makes print strong evidence of momentum but weak evidence of which genre earns the most.
Rank #2
Romance in 2025
In its June 2025 update, Circana reported that U.S. year-to-date romance print sales were 24% higher than the same period in 2024, and that romance sold 51 million units over the preceding 12 months. Circana called romance the leading growth category in the total print book market at that point in 2025. Romantasy and sports romance each posted triple-digit growth within the category, and suspense romance and contemporary romance also grew.
Circana’s Brenna Connor, a U.S. books industry analyst, described a change within the genre:
Rank #3
This year, I am watching a shift away from rosier romance subjects like romantic comedy and new adult romance in favor of authors and titles with darker themes.
Fantasy and romance in 2024
Publishers Weekly, reporting Circana BookScan figures for calendar 2024, said total U.S. print book unit sales reached 782.7 million, less than 1% above 2023. Adult fiction units rose 4.8%. Adult fantasy had the largest increase among adult subcategories, at 35.8%, and romance book sales rose almost 9%. Those are unit growth rates for one year, not revenue totals.
Rank #4
A hit title is not a genre average
Publishers Weekly also reported that Fourth Wing and Iron Flame together sold nearly 1.7 million print copies in 2024. That shows how much a single series can drive a genre’s totals, but it is one example, not a typical result for fantasy or romance authors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a bigger genre mean higher author earnings?
The available sources do not answer this. None of them reports genre-level author profit, royalties, or median earnings. Publisher revenue, retail sales, and unit counts are all measured before the money reaches the writer. Between the price a reader pays and an author’s income sit the publisher’s costs, the retailer’s margin, and, for many authors, an agent’s commission. Those shares vary by contract, format, and publisher, and the data here does not break them down by genre.
Best Value
A genre that sells the most copies can still pay individual authors less than a smaller genre with higher royalty rates or a steady backlist. Anyone planning a writing income should look at contract terms and per-title sales, not genre totals.
How to read genre sales claims
- Check the measure. Revenue share, unit sales, and year-over-year growth answer different questions and should not be ranked against each other.
- Check the format. APA genre shares cover audiobooks. Circana figures cover U.S. print units.
- Check the period. The Circana romance figures run through June 2025, and the Publishers Weekly figures cover calendar 2024.
- Check the scope. These figures describe the U.S. market. Results in other countries may differ.
- Check the claim against author income. Market size is not the same as what writers keep.
If you want to explore the genres named above, start with the ones showing the most print momentum, such as romance and fantasy, and compare them with the audiobook leaders before choosing where to spend your reading budget.
