If you’re wondering, “Why am I getting a package from Pitney Bowes?” the most common explanation is that a retailer or marketplace used Pitney Bowes for shipping or tracking. Pitney Bowes may be part of the delivery chain without being the seller or the carrier that brings the parcel to your door. The label alone does not identify the sender or prove that the package is a scam.
Why is Pitney Bowes on the package?
Pitney Bowes provides shipping and tracking services for merchants. It says it works with USPS, UPS, DHL, and FedEx for final delivery, so its name can appear even when you bought the item from a different store and another carrier completes delivery. A Pitney Bowes label by itself does not tell you which retailer sent the package.

How to find out who sent it
- Check your order histories. Review recent purchases on retailer and marketplace accounts. Consider whether another household member placed an order or someone sent you a gift.

What common Pitney Bowes tracking scans mean
Tracking messages can describe electronic shipping information, movement through the network, or a handoff to another carrier. A handoff to USPS for final delivery is a normal part of multi-carrier shipping.

- Delivered: The carrier recorded a delivery scan at the delivery address.
If a scan conflicts with what happened, contact the retailer or marketplace first; contact the carrier as appropriate for the delivery issue.
I didn’t order anything from Pitney Bowes. Is it a scam?
Not necessarily. The package may be an order from a retailer you recognize, a gift, or an item ordered by someone in your household. If it is genuinely unsolicited, one possibility is brushing: a seller sends a low-cost item to an address found online to make it appear that a verified buyer received a product and to post fake positive reviews. The Pitney Bowes name does not establish that this is what happened.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) says you are not required to pay for unsolicited merchandise. It recommends these steps:
- Do not pay for an item you did not order.
- If unopened and it has a return address, you may mark it “RETURN TO SENDER” for USPS return at no charge.
- If you opened it, you may keep it or dispose of it if safe.
- Do not scan an unexpected QR code. It could lead to a phishing website.
- Notify the marketplace or seller and ask it to remove any fake reviews associated with your name.
- If you suspect your information was compromised, change account passwords and monitor credit reports and credit-card bills.
USPIS also warns that criminals may use address and account information in schemes involving interception of merchandise at a recipient’s home. That is a reason to check your accounts and monitor financial activity, not proof that it occurred in your case. USPIS guidance on brushing scams

How to handle suspicious delivery messages
If you receive an unexpected text or email about a USPS delivery, do not click its link. USPIS warns that package texts with links can be smishing attempts. Instead, type USPS.com into your browser or use the retailer’s account or app to check the order. Report suspicious USPS-related texts or emails to [email protected]. What if the package looks dangerous?
For an item containing an unknown liquid or substance, seeds, food, plants, or anything else that seems dangerous, follow official suspicious-mail instructions rather than handling it further. USPIS advises isolating a suspected dangerous package, keeping a safe distance, washing your hands, and immediately calling Postal Inspectors at 1-877-876-2455 and saying “emergency.” Contact local authorities if medical attention is needed.
