James Franco completed an English bachelor’s degree at UCLA in 2008, an MFA in creative writing at Columbia University in 2010, and a master’s degree in filmmaking at NYU in 2011. The amount he personally paid for those degrees is not publicly established in the sources reviewed; published UCLA costs today cannot show what his education cost him.

Where did James Franco go to college?

Franco first attended UCLA in 1996 after graduating from Palo Alto High School. He studied English and drama, then left during his freshman year to pursue acting, according to Biography.com.

He returned to UCLA in 2006 as a creative-writing major and completed a bachelor’s degree in English in June 2008. UCLA’s profile of Franco confirms the degree and award date; Biography.com reports that he graduated with a 3.5 GPA.

What degrees did he complete?

New York University (NYU) Master’s degree in filmmaking 2011 Biography.com

UCLA says that in fall 2008 Franco enrolled in Columbia’s MFA writing program, Brooklyn College for creative writing, and NYU Tisch for directing. Biography.com also reports study or coursework at Warren Wilson College and Brooklyn College, pursuit of a PhD in English at Yale, and acceptances to programs at RISD and the University of Houston. Those accounts do not establish additional completed degrees; an acceptance, course of study, or pursuit of a doctorate is not the same as earning a credential.

How much did James Franco pay for his education?

No reliable total for Franco’s personal education spending is established by the sources cited here. They do not document his tuition bills, scholarships or other aid, UCLA residency classification, the exact terms he attended, or living expenses. His degree dates alone are not enough to calculate what he paid.

UCLA’s current published budgets can provide only a present-day reference point. For the 2026–27 academic year, UCLA Undergraduate Admission estimates a residence-hall budget of $45,500 for a California resident and $84,770 for a nonresident. These estimates include more than tuition: university fees, housing, food, books and supplies, transportation, personal expenses, and health insurance. UCLA notes that tuition and fees may change and that residency affects tuition. They are not historical charges to Franco or a basis for estimating his past bill. See UCLA’s tuition and fees page.
