What Ended the Boeing 747’s Historic Production Run?

Boeing linked a 2016 747-8 production slowdown to weaker freighter demand, but that announcement does not establish a single cause for the production run’s 2022 end.

Boeing’s clearest public explanation for pressure on the last 747 generation was weakening demand for the 747-8 Freighter. In January 2016, it said a stalled air-cargo recovery had slowed demand and announced a lower production rate. That statement helps explain the program’s commercial headwinds, but Boeing’s cited announcement does not establish that cargo demand was the sole reason production ultimately ended in 2022.

What did Boeing say was hurting the 747-8?

On January 21, 2016, Boeing said it would reduce the 747-8 production rate to align output with near-term demand. The company pointed to an air-cargo recovery that had stalled after beginning in late 2013, which it said had slowed demand for the 747-8 Freighter. Ray Conner, then head of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, contrasted that weakness with continued strength in passenger traffic growth and airplane demand. Boeing’s announcement also disclosed a $569 million after-tax charge associated with market and production impacts; that amount was a financial charge, not a measurement of lost demand.

This is the clearest documented market explanation in the available Boeing statements. It describes a 2016 rate reduction, not a definitive explanation of every factor in the later decision to end production.

How did the production run end?

The 747’s production run lasted 54 years, beginning in 1967 and yielding 1,574 aircraft, according to Boeing. The final aircraft was a 747-8 Freighter built for Atlas Air. Boeing says it rolled out of the Everett factory on December 6, 2022. Boeing’s 747 history and its announcement about the final 747 mark the end of production.

The key distinction is between Boeing’s earlier slowdown and the completed production run: the 2016 announcement documents a response to near-term freighter demand, while the final rollout came nearly seven years later. The sources cited here do not show that Boeing named one factor as the complete cause of the 2022 production end.

Why do Boeing’s final-delivery dates differ?

Boeing and Atlas Air announced a final-delivery celebration scheduled for January 31, 2023. However, Boeing’s 2024 annual report says the last aircraft delivery occurred in February 2023. The available Boeing sources do not explain this difference, so the celebration date should not be treated as a confirmed delivery date. The public celebration announcement and Boeing’s 2024 annual report provide the respective dates.

Did production ending mean the 747 fleet disappeared?

No. Ending production meant Boeing would no longer build new 747s; it did not immediately remove aircraft already in service. Boeing said it would continue supporting 747 operations and sustainment after production ended. Its 2022 annual report recorded 154 deliveries for the 747-8 program to more than a dozen customers. That figure covers the 747-8, not the entire 747 family. Boeing’s 2022 annual report provides the program-delivery figure and support statement.
