Compare your own Social Security Administration (SSA) estimates for different start dates, then weigh the monthly income each option provides against your cash-flow needs, health and expected longevity, work plans, and possible effects on a spouse or survivor. The Trustees’ projections describe program-wide scheduled benefits under stated assumptions; they do not determine the amount of any one person’s future check or predict what Congress will do.
Separate your claiming decision from Social Security’s financing outlook
Two different questions often get blurred together: how your claiming age affects your retirement benefit, and whether Social Security’s financing will support all benefits currently scheduled under law. They matter to the same household, but one does not answer the other.

Your claiming age affects your monthly retirement amount
SSA says retirement benefits can begin at age 62. If you start before your full retirement age (FRA), your monthly benefit is permanently lower than the amount payable at FRA. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67, and claiming at 62 can mean a reduction of as much as 30%, according to SSA’s 2024 information. The applicable rules and percentage depend on your birth year, so that figure should not be applied to everyone.

Waiting beyond FRA increases the monthly benefit through delayed retirement credits, but only up to age 70 under the rules described by SSA. Waiting past 70 does not produce an additional increase. These adjustments are tied to when an individual claims; they are separate from the Trustees’ projections about the program’s finances.

Reserve depletion is not a prediction that checks stop
The Trustees examine whether Social Security’s trust-fund reserves and continuing income will be sufficient to pay scheduled benefits under their assumptions. Their 2026 report projects that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) reserves will be depleted in the fourth quarter of 2032. At that point, continuing income is projected to cover 78% of scheduled OASI benefits.
The report separately projects that the combined Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASDI) funds will be depleted in the third quarter of 2034, when continuing income is projected to cover 83% of combined scheduled benefits. OASI and combined OASDI are different projections, so their dates and percentages are not interchangeable. Neither figure means benefits are projected to stop altogether. They describe what continuing income would cover at reserve depletion under the Trustees’ assumptions and current law.
These are program-level projections, not a calculation of an individual’s future payment. They also do not establish what Congress will enact. Legislation could change the eventual outcome, and Trustees’ projections are updated annually; the figures here are from the 2026 report.

How to compare your own claiming ages
Start with your personal SSA estimates rather than trying to choose an age from a general rule of thumb. SSA’s my Social Security service can show estimates for different retirement-age scenarios. The estimates give you a basis for comparing start dates and monthly amounts; they do not decide which trade-off best fits your household.
- Review estimates for several start ages. Use the scenarios available through your my Social Security account. Check that you are comparing your own record and the ages you are actually considering.
- Write down the start date and monthly estimate for each scenario. A larger monthly amount is not the only consideration: record when payments would begin as well as the estimated amount.
- Consider the years before a later start date. If you wait, you forgo payments during the time you could have received benefits under an earlier-start scenario. Consider how you would cover that period and what resources you would use.
- Assess your health and expected longevity. A higher monthly payment later may be more valuable if you expect to receive it for a long time; needing income sooner can make earlier payments more practical. These are personal considerations, not a universal break-even formula.
- Include the rest of your household plan. Consider work plans, a spouse’s circumstances and possible survivor effects, savings, taxes, and other retirement income where relevant. The SSA estimate is one input, not a complete household forecast.
- Revisit the program outlook using its report year. If you use a financing projection in your decision, identify it as a projection from the 2026 Trustees Report, not a guaranteed reduction to your individual check.
What the claiming options trade off
Earlier claiming generally means payments begin sooner and the monthly amount is lower than if you wait until FRA. Waiting raises the monthly amount up to age 70, but means starting later. The table summarizes the comparison without assuming a particular birth year, earnings record, or household situation.
| Comparison point | Earlier start | Later start | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| When payments begin | Earlier, once eligible; SSA says retirement benefits can begin at 62. | Later, after the age you choose to wait through. | Which income sources would cover expenses before benefits start? |
| Monthly retirement amount | Starting before FRA permanently reduces the monthly amount relative to FRA. | Waiting past FRA increases the monthly amount through age 70; waiting past 70 adds no increase under SSA’s described rules. | Compare your SSA estimates for each start-age scenario. |
| Birth-year rules | The applicable reduction depends on birth year; for those born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67 and claiming at 62 can mean up to a 30% reduction. | FRA and the applicable adjustment depend on birth year. | Use the rules and estimates applicable to your record rather than applying the 30% figure to everyone. |
| Health and expected longevity | May fit a need for income sooner, depending on personal circumstances. | A higher later monthly amount may matter more if benefits are received for a long time. | Consider your own health outlook; no single break-even age settles the choice for everyone. |
| Household circumstances | Earlier income may affect how you draw on other resources and coordinate retirement plans. | A later start may fit a plan to rely on other income first. | Account for work, spouse or survivor circumstances, taxes, savings, and other income where relevant. |
Why a break-even age cannot make the decision for you
A break-even comparison tries to identify when cumulative benefits from a later, higher monthly amount catch up with benefits received under an earlier start. It can be a useful illustration if you have accurate estimates and clear assumptions, but it answers a narrow question. It does not establish which choice is best for you.

The result depends on the amounts and dates in the scenarios being compared, and a household’s practical choice also depends on whether it needs income earlier, its health and expected longevity, and how benefits fit with work and other resources. A calculation that excludes a spouse or possible survivor effects may not capture the household decision. The supplied facts do not establish any reader’s birth year, benefit estimates, health, family circumstances, or income needs, so they cannot support a personalized break-even age or claiming recommendation.
Use a break-even calculation, if you make one, as one lens alongside the SSA estimates and your household budget—not as a countdown that automatically determines the right answer. A precise-looking age cannot make uncertain future longevity or future policy certain.
How to use the 2026 projections without overreading them
The 2026 Trustees Report’s OASI projection is depletion in the fourth quarter of 2032, with continuing income projected to pay 78% of scheduled OASI benefits at that point. Its combined OASDI projection is depletion in the third quarter of 2034, with 83% of combined scheduled benefits payable from continuing income then. Those figures belong to different trust-fund measures; state which one you mean if you discuss them.

Do not treat either percentage as a forecast that every beneficiary will receive exactly that percentage of their own scheduled amount. The projections describe aggregate program financing under the Trustees’ assumptions and current law. They are not individualized benefit estimates, and the report does not resolve future legislative choices. In particular, a projected reserve-depletion date is not the same as a date when benefits are projected to end.
It is reasonable to recognize financing uncertainty when planning for retirement. But choosing an earlier start solely to avoid a projected cut assumes more than the report establishes: it assumes how any eventual shortfall would affect an individual and what lawmakers will or will not do. Conversely, choosing to wait solely because the Trustees’ figures are program-wide would also ignore the personal factors that determine whether waiting is manageable. Use current SSA estimates for the claiming-age comparison and keep the financing projection in its proper, program-level role.
A practical way to reach a decision
Build a comparison around your actual choices
Choose the start-age scenarios you are seriously considering and put their SSA-estimated monthly amounts and payment start dates side by side. Identify the period in which a later-claiming option would leave you relying on wages, savings, or other retirement income. This makes the immediate cash-flow difference visible instead of focusing only on the eventual monthly amount.

Stress-test the household plan
Ask whether the plan still works if you need income sooner than expected, live longer than expected, or continue working on a different schedule than you anticipate. Include a spouse or survivor considerations where relevant, and account for taxes and other income as part of the broader retirement picture. The point is not to predict every future event; it is to see which option leaves your household with a workable range of choices.
Keep assumptions and dates attached to conclusions
If your decision relies on a benefit estimate, note its start age and the record it reflects. If it relies on trust-fund projections, name the 2026 Trustees Report and whether you mean OASI or combined OASDI. A conclusion that strips away those qualifications turns a scenario into a certainty it is not.
SSA describes choosing when to start retirement benefits as an important decision because the choice affects the monthly benefit amount for the rest of your life. That makes a personal comparison worthwhile; it does not mean there is a single age that is right for all claimants. The defensible answer is the one that fits your own estimates, cash-flow needs, health outlook, work plans, and household circumstances—not an age selected from a program-wide projection alone.
