When Should You Claim Social Security? A Break-Even Age Guide

Compare your own Social Security estimates at 62, full retirement age, and 70. See how a break-even age works—and why it cannot determine the right claiming age by itself.

There is no single best age to claim Social Security retirement benefits. Age 62 gives you the earliest start and a smaller monthly benefit; waiting until your full retirement age (FRA) or as late as 70 generally raises the monthly amount. A break-even calculation can show when the larger later checks catch up with the payments you skipped, but it cannot decide what is right for your health, work plans, household, or finances. Start with your own estimates from the Social Security Administration (SSA), then compare claiming ages using assumptions you can see.

What a break-even age tells you—and what it does not

A break-even age is the point at which the total retirement benefits received under a later-claiming choice catch up with the total received under an earlier-claiming choice. The earlier claimant receives checks for more months; the later claimant generally receives larger checks. The crossover depends on the benefit amounts and the assumptions used in the calculation.

It answers a limited cash-flow question: At what age would the cumulative payments in one scenario equal the cumulative payments in another? It does not identify the age at which every person should claim. By itself, the calculation does not account for how long you will live, whether you keep working, income taxes, what you could earn by investing early payments, or how a decision may affect a spouse or survivor. Those factors can change the practical value of the options, but a simple crossover calculation cannot quantify them.

Use your own SSA estimates for each claiming age rather than a generic rule of thumb. The SSA says its retirement calculator can compare estimates at 62, FRA, and 70 and lets users explore different earnings assumptions and intended start dates. The SSA Detailed Calculator page lists version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, and updated using assumptions from the 2026 Trustees Report. Estimates depend on your earnings record and the assumptions you enter; they are not a promise of a particular future payment.

How claiming age changes the monthly benefit

Retirement benefits can start at 62, but claiming before FRA permanently reduces the monthly retirement benefit compared with waiting until FRA. Claiming after FRA increases it through delayed retirement credits. For people born in 1943 or later, those credits are 8% per year of delay, and they stop accruing at 70. The precise benefit depends on the person’s record and the month benefits start.

FRA depends on birth year. For people born in 1960 or later, it is 67. For this group, claiming at 62 can reduce the monthly retirement benefit by as much as 30% compared with claiming at FRA. The examples below illustrate the age adjustment only; they are not estimates for any particular worker.

Claiming choice What changes What to check
At 62 Earliest available start; monthly retirement benefit is reduced for claiming before FRA. For a person with FRA 67, the reduction can be as much as 30%. How much income you need now, whether you plan to work, and whether the reduced monthly amount fits your longer-term budget.
At FRA No early-claiming reduction relative to the benefit payable at FRA; this is the reference point for the age adjustment. Your exact FRA, which is set by birth year, and your personalized estimated amount.
After FRA, up to 70 Delayed retirement credits raise the monthly benefit for eligible people; for those born in 1943 or later, credits are 8% per year and stop at 70. Whether you can cover expenses while waiting and whether the larger monthly benefit is valuable for your circumstances.

Do not assume that “8% per year” means every person’s check will be exactly a fixed multiple of a remembered estimate. The final amount depends on the person’s earnings record, FRA, and claiming month. The SSA’s 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement illustrates the formulas: a worker with a $1,671 primary insurance amount and FRA 67 would receive an example amount of $1,169 at 62 after the 30% reduction formula. In a separate example, a worker born in February 1958 had five months of delayed credits that raised $1,671 to $1,726. These are formula examples, not current average benefits or personal forecasts.

Calculate a break-even age with your own estimates

For each start age you want to compare, get the estimated monthly benefit from your SSA account or calculator. Choose two scenarios, write down the start month and amount for each, and compare cumulative payments at later ages. A basic calculation assumes benefits begin on schedule and compares nominal dollars—that is, dollars added without adjusting for inflation or the timing value of money.

  1. Record the assumptions. Note your birth year and FRA, the two claiming ages and months, the monthly estimates, and whether the estimate assumes you keep earning at a particular level. Decide whether the comparison excludes cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), taxes, investment returns, and spouse or survivor benefits. A simple example should say plainly when it excludes them.
  2. Calculate the early claimant’s lead. Multiply the early scenario’s monthly estimate by the number of months it pays before the later scenario starts. This is the cumulative amount the later claimant must eventually make up.
  3. Calculate the monthly catch-up rate. Subtract the early scenario’s monthly benefit from the later scenario’s monthly benefit. If the later estimate is not larger, the proposed comparison does not produce a catch-up under these assumptions.
  4. Estimate the crossover. Divide the early claimant’s lead by the later scenario’s additional monthly amount. The result is the approximate number of months after the later start date needed to catch up. Add those months to the later start age to express the result as an age.
  5. Check the result against your actual estimates. SSA estimates may differ from simple age-adjustment examples because they reflect earnings history and other details. If estimates change with different earnings assumptions, recalculate rather than carrying forward an old crossover age.

Worked example using clearly stated hypothetical amounts

Suppose a person born in 1960 or later has FRA 67 and uses a hypothetical FRA benefit of $2,000 per month. For illustration, assume claiming at 62 gives $1,400 per month after a 30% reduction, and assume a 70-year estimate of $2,480 per month using the age adjustment alone: three years of 8% delayed credits above the FRA amount. These round figures make the arithmetic visible; they are not SSA estimates for a real worker and do not account for the earnings record, claiming month, COLAs, taxes, or other factors.

Comparison Payments accumulated by later start age Later monthly advantage Simplified crossover
62 versus 67 At 62, $1,400 × 60 months = $84,000 before age 67. $2,000 − $1,400 = $600 per month after 67. $84,000 ÷ $600 = 140 months after 67, or approximately age 78 years and 8 months.
62 versus 70 At 62, $1,400 × 96 months = $134,400 before age 70. $2,480 − $1,400 = $1,080 per month after 70. $134,400 ÷ $1,080 ≈ 124.4 months after 70, or approximately age 80 years and 4 months.
67 versus 70 At 67, $2,000 × 36 months = $72,000 before age 70. $2,480 − $2,000 = $480 per month after 70. $72,000 ÷ $480 = 150 months after 70, or approximately age 82 years and 6 months.

These are nominal-dollar crossovers under a deliberately simplified set of assumptions. They are not predictions of lifespan or advice to claim at a particular age. A different personal estimate, start month, or treatment of COLAs and other factors changes the result. The SSA provides age-based benefit rules and estimate tools; it does not establish one universal break-even age or claiming recommendation.

Get the right estimates before comparing

The age adjustment is only one part of the benefit calculation. The SSA bases retirement benefits on the worker’s highest 35 years of earnings. If a worker has fewer than 35 years with covered earnings, years without earnings count as zero. Additional work can replace lower-earning years in the calculation, potentially raising the benefit.

That is why stopping work and claiming benefits are separate decisions. You might stop working and delay claiming, keep working while claiming, or continue working and wait to claim. A calculation that treats the current estimate as fixed may miss a possible change if future earnings replace lower years. Use the SSA’s account or calculator to explore different earnings assumptions and intended start ages; keep the assumptions consistent across the age comparisons.

  1. Sign in to your personal SSA account or use the SSA retirement calculator to obtain estimates at 62, your FRA, and 70.
  2. Confirm the earnings record and future earnings assumptions behind the figures. If you expect to work, try the assumptions that best reflect that plan rather than treating the estimate as independent of work.
  3. Write down the exact estimated amounts and the planned start month for each option. Do not compare one estimate based on one earnings assumption with another built from a different assumption unless that difference is intentional.
  4. Use the same dollar basis and exclusions in each scenario. If your calculation ignores taxes, COLAs, investment returns, or household benefits, label those exclusions so the crossover is not mistaken for a complete financial forecast.

SSA’s benefit tools are the appropriate starting point for personal amounts. The formula examples in the 2025 Annual Statistical Supplement can help explain how age adjustments work, but they should not be substituted for a current estimate based on your earnings record.

Account for work and the earnings test

If you claim before FRA and continue working, the annual retirement earnings test may cause SSA to withhold benefits when earnings exceed the applicable limit. The limit and withholding formula depend on whether you are under FRA for the entire year or reach FRA during the year. From FRA onward, earnings do not reduce benefits under this test. The thresholds change annually.

For 2026, SSA lists a $24,480 limit for people under FRA for the whole year and a $65,160 limit for people reaching FRA during 2026. The withholding formula differs between those situations, so the two figures are not interchangeable caps. SSA also says it recalculates benefits at FRA to account for months in which benefits were withheld because of excess earnings. Consider the effect of withholding when estimating near-term cash flow, and check the current SSA rules for your specific year and circumstances rather than reusing a threshold in a later year.

Bring health, household, and timing into the decision

A break-even age is not an individual’s life expectancy. The SSA’s Social Security Bulletin analysis using 2014 data reported that beneficiaries who claimed at 62 received benefits for almost 25 years, compared with about 20 years for people who claimed after FRA. In the same analysis, the average death age for the age-62 group was only about one year lower than for those claiming at or after FRA. These are historical averages for groups, not a current forecast or a prediction for any one person.

The same SSA analysis reported that people who claimed at 62 received about $500 less per month on average than those who waited until at least FRA. That historical group average is not a direct comparison of an individual worker’s options: earnings histories and other characteristics differ, and the figure is not a current estimate.

Household circumstances matter as well. A spouse’s benefit or a possible survivor benefit can affect how a claiming decision works for a household, and survivor benefits can have different FRA rules from a worker’s retirement benefit. The age-only examples here do not calculate spouse or survivor outcomes. If those benefits may apply, use SSA guidance for the relevant benefit type and seek case-specific help rather than treating a worker-only crossover as a household recommendation.

There is also a separate Medicare timing issue. Delaying Social Security retirement benefits beyond 65 does not itself remove Medicare enrollment requirements. Pay attention to Medicare timing even if you decide to wait to claim retirement benefits; do not assume the two decisions automatically move together.

  • Cumulative payments: Identify the crossover only under explicit assumptions, and notice how far in the future it falls. It is a comparison of payment totals, not a score for the better choice.
  • Work and earnings: Include your expected work plan and check the earnings test if you would claim before FRA while working. Consider whether additional earnings could improve your highest-35-years calculation.
  • Household benefits: Identify whether a spouse or survivor benefit may be relevant before relying on an individual-worker calculation.
  • Timing and personal circumstances: Consider your need for income now, your ability to wait, health and longevity considerations, and other household resources. These are individual variables; the age rules alone cannot resolve them.

For a date-specific question such as “At what age should I start receiving my Social Security retirement benefits?”, the SSA’s answer is not a universal age. Its FAQ dated March 13, 2024, says: “Choosing when to start receiving your Social Security retirement benefits is an important decision that affects your monthly benefit amount for the rest of your life.” That is an agency statement about the long-lasting effect of the choice, not a recommendation that everyone wait or claim early.

Birth-year details that can change the comparison

Check your FRA rather than assuming it is 67. SSA’s FRA calculator identifies 67 for people born in 1960 or later; earlier birth years can have a different FRA. The calculator also handles January 1 birthdays using the previous birth year. That detail can affect which FRA applies, so a person born on January 1 should use the SSA’s instructions rather than simply entering the calendar year at face value.

Similarly, age 70 is the end of delayed retirement credits, not a signal that the same percentage applies to every person’s benefit. Credits stop accruing after 70, while the actual check remains tied to the worker’s record and claiming month. Use the correct birth-year rules and personal estimate before calculating the crossover.

Common break-even mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the crossover as a life-expectancy forecast. It is only the point at which two payment totals match under chosen assumptions.
  • Using a generic benefit amount as if it were yours. SSA formula examples and historical averages are not personal estimates.
  • Mixing assumptions across scenarios. If one estimate assumes future earnings and another does not, the comparison may reflect different earnings records as well as different claiming ages.
  • Forgetting work-related withholding. Benefits claimed before FRA may be withheld under the earnings test when earnings exceed the applicable limit.
  • Assuming a worker-only result settles a household decision. Potential spouse and survivor benefits need their own applicable rules and individualized analysis.
  • Confusing a larger monthly amount with a universally better outcome. A larger later check comes after a period without those benefits; whether the tradeoff suits you depends on circumstances a simple formula leaves out.

Bottom line on break-even ages

Use a break-even calculation to understand the payment tradeoff between claiming earlier and receiving a larger benefit later—not to choose an age mechanically. Get consistent estimates from SSA at 62, your FRA, and 70; account for your earnings record and work plan; and make the limits of the calculation explicit. A crossover age is a useful input to a decision, not the decision itself.
