The announcement named Bose Head of WhatsApp India and described him as the head of WhatsApp’s India operations. Contemporary reports said he would build the company’s first full country team outside California, based in Gurugram, Haryana. He was expected to report to Chief Operating Officer Matt Idema.

The announcement was made on November 21, 2018; Bose’s start was planned for early 2019. Those are separate dates: the appointment was announced in November, while his operating role began later.

Business Standard’s Reuters report, Hindustan Times and Scroll.in all identify the role as India head rather than CEO.
Why “CEO of India operations” is misleading
Bose was the co-founder and CEO of Ezetap before joining WhatsApp. That former title is the likely reason “CEO” appears in some descriptions of the appointment. WhatsApp’s reported title was Head of WhatsApp India, not CEO of WhatsApp India.
“Head of India operations” describes the geographic scope of his work; it does not establish a separate India CEO position. A precise headline is therefore: WhatsApp appoints Abhijit Bose as head of India operations. The distinction is documented in the Business Standard appointment report and Hindustan Times’ contemporaneous coverage.

Who Abhijit Bose was
Bose co-founded Ezetap, an Indian electronic-payments company, and served as its chief executive. Contemporary profiles said he studied at Harvard Business School and Cornell University. His experience in payments and business technology fit WhatsApp’s ambitions for business messaging, digital commerce and payments in India.

Why WhatsApp created a country-head role in India
India was described in 2018 coverage as WhatsApp’s largest market by users. The company was expanding WhatsApp Business and exploring payments, while Indian authorities pressed it to maintain a stronger local presence.
The appointment also came amid scrutiny over viral rumors, misinformation and provocative content associated with mob violence. Regulators and stakeholders wanted better local grievance handling and more direct engagement. A country-level executive gave WhatsApp a senior representative to build relationships and operations in India; the evidence does not show that Bose was appointed solely as a misinformation or regulatory fixer.

At the time, reports said more than one million people in India were using WhatsApp’s business products. That was a historical 2018 figure, not a current user count, as reported by The Economic Times.

What happened after Bose’s appointment
Meta confirmed on November 15, 2022, that Bose had stepped down after roughly four years at WhatsApp. Meta thanked him for his contribution as its first Head of WhatsApp in India. Reports described the departure as planned and separate from Meta’s broader layoffs, although it followed other senior India exits.
Meta subsequently announced Sandhya Devanathan as head and vice president of Meta India, with her transition beginning January 1, 2023. That was a broader Meta India leadership role, not proof that she directly replaced Bose in the WhatsApp-specific position. The departure was reported by The Indian Express and TechCrunch; Meta’s announcement is at about.fb.com.
The accurate takeaway
Abhijit Bose became WhatsApp’s first head of India operations in a November 2018 announcement, with a mandate centered on building a local team, business messaging, partnerships, payments discussions and user safety. Calling him “CEO of WhatsApp India” confuses that role with his earlier position as Ezetap’s CEO. He no longer holds the WhatsApp post.
