They are separate companies that work closely together on Android devices, apps, and other technology. Google operates under Alphabet Inc., the publicly traded parent company; Samsung Electronics is a separate company with its own shareholders and governance.
What “Google” means in the ownership question
Google is the familiar brand and operating business. Alphabet Inc. is its parent company and the public company whose shares trade on the stock market. So the precise corporate question is whether Samsung owns Alphabet shares or voting control. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies Alphabet as the registrant and describes the company’s ownership and voting structure.

Who controls Alphabet?
Alphabet has three classes of stock with different voting rights: Class A shares carry one vote per share, Class B shares carry ten votes, and Class C shares generally carry no votes. The rights are set out in Alphabet’s 2026 annual-meeting materials.

Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says that, as of December 31, 2025, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin collectively beneficially owned approximately 89.3% of its outstanding Class B shares, representing approximately 52.7% of the company’s total voting power. That gives them significant influence over shareholder matters, including director elections and major corporate transactions. These figures describe voting power and a particular filing date; they do not mean Page and Brin own all of Alphabet economically.
Alphabet’s 2026 proxy statement identifies reportable beneficial owners and management holdings. Samsung is not disclosed there as Alphabet’s controlling owner or a major beneficial owner. That is different from proving that no Samsung-affiliated entity holds any Alphabet shares at all; the corporate conclusion is that Samsung is not Google’s parent or disclosed controlling shareholder.

Why Samsung phones look closely tied to Google
A Galaxy phone combines software and services from both companies. Android is Google’s mobile platform; Samsung adds its One UI interface and its own apps and services. Compatible devices may also include Google Mobile Services and apps such as Play Store, Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Photos, or Gemini. Availability and configuration vary by model, country, carrier, Android version, and service license.
Seeing Google apps on a Samsung phone is evidence of integration and distribution, not ownership. Likewise, Samsung’s customization of Android through One UI does not give Samsung control of Google or Alphabet.

What Samsung contributes—and what Google contributes
| Area | Samsung | Google / Alphabet |
|---|---|---|
| Phones and hardware | Galaxy design, manufacturing, branding, and device integration | Provides the Android platform and services used on many Galaxy devices |
| Software layer | One UI and Samsung-specific device features | Android platform development and compatibility ecosystem |
| Apps and services | Galaxy Store, Samsung Account, Samsung Health, Samsung Wallet, SmartThings, and Bixby, among other offerings | Google Play and Google apps and services, including Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Photos, and Gemini |
| Corporate ownership | Separate company with its own shareholders and governance | Alphabet is Google’s parent company; Alphabet has its own shareholders and voting structure |
This division is a useful general guide, not a guarantee that every Galaxy phone has the same apps or features. Product and service arrangements can differ across markets and devices.
What binds the companies together
Their relationship involves licensing, distribution, technical integration, and collaboration—not a parent-subsidiary structure. Samsung Electronics’ 2026 first-quarter interim report lists an agreement covering Google apps including Play Store and YouTube in 32 European Economic Area countries, with a term through March 31, 2027 as stated in that report. The report also lists a Google patent cross-license agreement dated January 25, 2014. These are examples of contractual cooperation, not evidence that either company owns the other.

Google described its relationship with Samsung as a “decade-long partnership” in a February 2026 announcement about Galaxy S26 and Android AI features. Its July 2026 Galaxy Unpacked announcement described continued collaboration across Galaxy phones, watches, and intelligent eyewear. Such cooperation can include integrating products and developing experiences together without transferring corporate ownership.
Does Samsung depend on Google?
Samsung benefits from Android, Google Play, and Google services that make its devices part of a large app and services ecosystem. Google, in turn, benefits when a major device maker sells Android phones and puts Google services within reach of users. That creates strategic interdependence and leverage: Samsung supplies hardware scale and consumer access, while Google supplies software, services, and app distribution.

Neither side’s commercial importance establishes ownership. Samsung retains its Galaxy hardware, brand, One UI, and Samsung services; Google and Alphabet retain their own platform, products, and corporate structure. The balance can vary by product, market, and contract.
Quick Recap
Ownership, control, and partnership are different
- Ownership means holding equity in a company. The reviewed filings do not identify Samsung as Alphabet’s controlling or major beneficial owner.
- Control may come from voting rights, board authority, or a parent-subsidiary relationship. Alphabet’s dual-class shares give Page and Brin significant voting influence; Samsung’s commercial agreements do not establish control over Alphabet.
- Partnership can mean licensing apps, cross-licensing patents, integrating services, or developing product features. It does not by itself mean shared ownership.
- Platform dependence means relying on another company’s software or distribution ecosystem. It can be strategically important without changing who owns either company.
