Look for the contactless-wave or Google Pay symbol before you shop, and bring a physical card or cash as a backup. Dollar General’s terms explicitly list Google Pay for DG Delivery, which is a separate question from tapping your phone at a store register.
Does Dollar General accept Google Pay?
There are two different answers depending on where you pay:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Dollar General channel | What is established |
|---|---|
| Physical store register | Google Pay can work if that terminal accepts contactless payments. Dollar General does not publish a promise that every store or register supports it. |
| DG Delivery | Dollar General’s User Shopping Agreement explicitly lists Google Pay as an accepted payment method: Dollar General terms. |
| DG Pickup | The published terms clearly mention credit and debit cards, but do not provide the same explicit, universal Google Pay statement as the delivery section. Use the payment options shown during checkout. |
| DG GO! | This is Dollar General’s separate scan-and-pay service, not Google Wallet tap-to-pay. |
Google’s rule is terminal-based: Google Wallet can be used where the reader displays the Google Pay or contactless symbol. See Google’s tap-to-pay guidance. A register that accepts chip cards is not necessarily equipped for NFC contactless payments.
How to tell whether a store register supports it
- Look for the contactless-wave symbol or Google Pay logo on the reader.
- Check whether the screen offers a tap option rather than only insert or swipe.
- At self-checkout, inspect the reader before scanning a full order; availability and configuration vary by store.
- Do not assume that another Dollar General location has the same equipment.
If the terminal asks you to insert or swipe after a tap attempt, cancel or reset the transaction and ask an employee for help. Google describes this reset step in its tap-to-pay troubleshooting instructions.

What you need before paying
Google Pay is now generally delivered through the Google Wallet app. A compatible setup normally requires:
- An Android phone with NFC hardware.
- NFC switched on.
- Google Wallet selected as the default contactless-payment app.
- A supported debit or credit card added and verified in Wallet.
- A screen lock, such as a PIN, pattern, password, or supported biometric method.
- A phone that meets Google’s security and certification requirements.
Google says card support is determined by the issuing bank, so an otherwise compatible phone does not guarantee that every card can be added. Requirements and supported cards are covered in Google’s U.S. payment-method guidance and tap-to-pay requirements.
How to set up Google Wallet
- Open the Google Wallet app.
- Tap Add to Wallet.
- Select Payment card, then New credit or debit card.
- Scan the card or enter its details manually.
- Tap Save and continue, accept the issuer terms, and complete any bank verification.
- Turn on NFC in Android settings.
- Set Google Wallet as the default NFC or contactless-payment app.
- Confirm that a screen lock is active.
Google’s current card-add instructions are at support.google.com/wallet/answer/12058983. If the card cannot be verified, contact the bank; Google notes that the issuer controls eligibility for mobile payments.

- This is a USB hot-pluggable device that complies with the CCID standard and is ideal for applications such as personal identity security authentication and online micropayments.
- This is a USB full-speed device (12 Mbps), which reads NFC tags at 106 kbps、212 Kbps and 242 Kbps, allowing faster read and write speeds and higher efficiency

- Widely used in areas such as access control, electronic payment, bus e-ticketing, highway toll collection systems, network verification, logistics, and supply chain management.
How to pay at the register
- Tell the cashier you are paying by card or contactless payment if the register requires a payment selection.
- Unlock your Android phone. The Wallet app does not always need to be open.
- Hold the back of the phone near the reader’s contactless area for several seconds.
- If the first position fails, move the phone’s top or bottom edge near the reader; NFC antenna placement differs by model.
- Follow any PIN, signature, or other verification prompt.
- Wait for the terminal approval and Wallet confirmation, such as the blue check mark.
Wallet normally charges the selected default card. You can change the card before completing the payment. A debit transaction may request a PIN, while a credit transaction may request a signature or no additional verification, depending on the terminal and issuer. The phone uses a virtual card number that may differ from the number printed on your physical card.
Does it work at Dollar General self-checkout?
It can, but only when that particular self-checkout reader supports contactless payments. Some stations require you to choose a payment type before presenting the phone. If the station insists on insert or swipe, reset the transaction or ask an employee; do not assume the reader is NFC-enabled just because it accepts chip cards.
Can I use Google Pay for DG Delivery?
Yes. Dollar General’s User Shopping Agreement specifically lists Google Pay among accepted DG Delivery methods, along with credit and debit cards and Apple Pay. The terms also say an authorization hold may be placed for the estimated order total, with the final charge made after the order is completed and ready for delivery. Delivery fees, tips, taxes, and other order charges are separate from Google Pay acceptance.

DG Pickup
For pickup, rely on the payment choices displayed at checkout. Dollar General’s published terms describe credit and debit cards and exclude cash, checks, EBT, DG Cash, and gift cards, but they do not make the same clear universal Google Pay statement used for delivery. See the DG Pickup page and confirm the options for your order.
DG GO!
DG GO! is Dollar General’s own in-store scan-and-pay experience. It is not Google Pay: Google Wallet is a payment wallet used at a compatible terminal, while DG GO! is Dollar General’s shopping workflow. Dollar General’s terms describe DG GO! as accepting credit or debit cards and excluding cash, checks, EBT, paper coupons, DG Cash, and gift cards. The Dollar General app page currently displays a notice that DG GO! is temporarily paused in all stores; that status can change.

Can I use coupons or DG Cash with Google Pay?
Yes, these functions are separate from the payment tap:
- Enter your myDG phone number at checkout to apply eligible digital offers and earn qualifying cash back, as explained on Dollar General’s myDG page.
- Redeem DG Cash by showing or scanning its barcode. At self-checkout, Dollar General’s terms describe selecting the gift-card payment option and scanning the DG Cash barcode.
- Google Pay pays with the selected bank card in Google Wallet; it does not store or spend DG Cash.
A register may allow DG Cash toward part of an order and another payment method for the balance, but the exact workflow can depend on the register and store.

Why isn’t Google Pay working?
Check the phone and Wallet
- Verify that NFC is on and Google Wallet is the default contactless app.
- Unlock the phone and confirm a screen lock is enabled.
- Check that the card is marked ready for contactless payments and has completed bank verification.
- Update Wallet and Android. Rooted phones, unlocked bootloaders, custom ROMs, or uncertified software can fail Google’s security checks.
Check the terminal
- Confirm that the contactless symbol is present.
- Hold the phone closer and keep it still for a few extra seconds.
- Try the phone’s top and bottom edges because the NFC antenna location varies.
- Open Google Wallet manually and try again.
- Ask the cashier to reset the card transaction or try another register.
Check the bank or card
The issuer may not support that card in Wallet, may require verification, or may have blocked or replaced the card. Contact the bank if Wallet reports an issuer or card error. Google explains issuer responsibility in its supported-payment-method guidance.

Situations where you should bring a backup
Carry a physical debit or credit card, or cash, if the store lacks a contactless symbol, has inconsistent or older readers, your phone battery is low, or your card has previously failed in a mobile wallet. Do not count on Google Pay for cash back: whether cash back is available can depend on the card, terminal, and transaction.
- EBT/SNAP support is a separate issue; Google Wallet compatibility does not make an EBT card usable through tap-to-pay.
- Gift cards, prepaid products, money services, and other restricted items may have additional controls.
- Age-restricted purchases can still require physical identification.
- A thick or metal phone case can interfere with NFC; remove it if tapping fails.
- For a return, keep the receipt. Google says a retailer may request the last four digits of the virtual card used.
Bottom line for a Dollar General trip
Set up and verify Google Wallet before leaving, then check the contactless symbol when you arrive. If it is present, an unlocked NFC Android phone with a supported card should generally be able to pay. Because Dollar General does not guarantee contactless acceptance at every physical location, bring a backup payment method. Google Pay is explicitly listed for DG Delivery, while pickup and store-specific register support require checking the options available for that transaction.
