Amazon Chime was AWS’s cloud communications service for meetings, calls, chat, and content sharing. AWS announced it in February 2017, but ended support for the service—including Business Calling—on February 20, 2026. The separate Amazon Chime SDK was not affected.

What was Amazon Chime?

Amazon Chime was a managed cloud service for business communications. Users could host or join meetings, make voice and video calls, chat, and share screens or other content through desktop and mobile applications. AWS described the service as available across desktop, iOS, and Android in its February 14, 2017 launch announcement.

AWS’s February 13, 2017 availability post also listed meeting scheduling and hosting, recording, and personalized meeting URLs in Pro. Those are descriptions of the historical product, not features available through the retired service today.

What did Chime’s launch editions include?

At launch, Amazon described three editions: Basic, Plus, and Pro. The table summarizes the 2017 announcement, not current plans or pricing. The two AWS launch announcements emphasize some tier features differently, so the details below are attributed to the specific release that stated them.

2017 edition Features described at launch Launch-era price
Basic Amazon’s February 14 release listed meeting attendance, person-to-person voice or video calls, messaging, and chat. AWS’s February 13 post described one-to-one voice/video calls and chat. No price stated in the February 14 release.
Plus Amazon’s February 14 release listed email-domain administration, Active Directory configuration, and 1 GB per user of message retention. AWS’s February 13 post highlighted screen sharing and company-directory integration. $2.50 per user per month, as announced in 2017.
Pro Amazon’s February 14 release described hosted meetings with screen sharing and video for up to 100 users, mobile, laptop, and in-room video, and unlimited VoIP support. AWS’s February 13 post also listed recording and personalized meeting URLs. $15 per user per month, as announced in 2017.

These prices and capabilities belong to Chime’s 2017 launch. They are not a current offer: AWS stopped accepting new customers on February 19, 2025, and later ended support for the service.

Is Amazon Chime still supported?

No. AWS announced that it would end support for Amazon Chime, including Business Calling, effective February 20, 2026. That date has passed. According to AWS’s February 19, 2025 support notice, existing Team or Enterprise customers created before February 19, 2025 could use features until the end date. After February 20, 2026, users could no longer host meetings, manage users, or use Business Calling through the Chime service.

Is the Amazon Chime SDK also discontinued?

No. The Amazon Chime SDK is distinct from the former end-user Chime service. AWS explicitly said its end-of-support announcement did not affect the SDK’s availability. The retirement notice applies to the Chime service, including Business Calling; it should not be read as an announcement that the SDK was retired.

What can former Chime users do?

AWS’s transition guide names AWS Wickr and partner solutions Slack, Webex, and Zoom as possible collaboration alternatives. That list is not a comparison or a recommendation for a particular organization. Choose based on the functions you need and verify current offerings directly with each provider.

  • Meetings and collaboration: Check whether the option covers your requirements for video meetings, screen sharing, chat, and administration.
  • Business Calling: If your organization used Chime phone numbers, AWS directed customers to consider porting them to another carrier. Confirm number-porting rules and timing with the receiving carrier.
  • Migration: Inventory users, meeting workflows, directories, calling numbers, and any integrations before selecting a replacement. Plan how to notify users and move recurring meetings or business contacts.
