HPE announced in May 2019 that it would buy supercomputer maker Cray and combine the companies’ technology with HPE GreenLake to pursue high-performance computing (HPC) and AI services. HPE completed the acquisition on September 25, 2019. The service proposal was a strategic plan, not proof that a particular HPC-as-a-Service offer is available today on specific terms.
What HPE announced—and when the deal closed
On May 17, 2019, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a definitive agreement to acquire Cray for $35 per share in cash. HPE then estimated the transaction at approximately $1.3 billion net of cash. HPE’s May 17 announcement described a proposed transaction, not a completed purchase.
HPE announced that it had completed the acquisition on September 25, 2019, earlier than its original target date. Its completion release valued the deal at approximately $1.4 billion net of cash. A later HPE annual report recorded $1.5 billion in acquisition-date fair-value consideration. These figures describe different stages and accounting measures; they should not be treated as interchangeable estimates. HPE’s completion announcement and its 2021 annual report give the respective figures.
Why Cray mattered to HPE
Cray brought HPE supercomputing technology and expertise in high-performance computing. HPE said the combined portfolio would span compute, high-performance storage, system interconnects, software, and services, as well as add research and development capability and service and support reach. The strategic case was to join Cray’s HPC capabilities with HPE’s broader enterprise technology portfolio.

In the completion release, Phil Davis, then HPE’s president of Hybrid IT, called the combined portfolio “the most comprehensive end-to-end portfolio” across compute, storage, software, and services in HPC and AI. Cray CEO Peter Ungaro described the deal as a way to bring Cray technology to a broader market by leveraging HPE’s scale. These were executives’ statements in HPE’s announcement, not independent assessments of the deal’s results.
What “HPC as a service” meant in the announcement
HPE said the combined companies expected to introduce HPC-as-a-Service and AI and machine-learning analytics through HPE GreenLake. The completion release reiterated the prospective GreenLake opportunity and attributed potential customer benefits such as choice, flexibility, and speed to market to the planned offering.

The distinction matters: the 2019 announcement explains HPE’s strategy, but does not establish current availability, pricing, service configuration, or geographic eligibility for a specific GreenLake HPC service. HPE’s current HPE Cray portfolio page describes supercomputing systems and related HPC and AI products, software, storage, and services; it does not settle those GreenLake service terms. Buyers should confirm current offerings directly with HPE.
What the Cray name means now
HPE continues to use HPE Cray as its supercomputing brand. Its current portfolio materials describe systems and supporting products and services for HPC and AI. The name therefore remains relevant as a brand within HPE’s portfolio, even though Cray is no longer a standalone company following the 2019 acquisition. HPE’s HPE Cray supercomputing page provides its current portfolio description; product details may change.

How to assess an HPC service model
An organization evaluating service-based HPC against customer-owned infrastructure should compare the actual proposal rather than assume the service is cheaper or more flexible. The key questions are:
- Up-front commitment: What infrastructure investment, minimum term, or other initial commitment is required?
- Facilities and operations: Which party supplies the data-center environment and manages day-to-day operations?
- Capacity: How is capacity provisioned, adjusted, and billed, and what limits apply?
- Support: Which hardware, software, and operational support tasks are included?
- Commercial terms: What are the pricing structure, service levels, renewal terms, and geographic restrictions?
The 2019 announcement did not specify these buyer-level terms. They need to be checked in the current service documentation and contract.
The market forecast HPE cited in 2019
HPE’s September 2019 completion release cited a Hyperion forecast, made in May 2019, that the HPC segment and associated storage and services would grow from approximately $28 billion in 2018 to approximately $35 billion in 2021. Those were forecast values reported at the time—not a measurement of today’s market or evidence that the forecast was achieved.
