When Warren Buffett announced an estate plan on November 25, 2024, he said his three children would be responsible for gradually distributing his Berkshire Hathaway holdings after his death. The Associated Press then estimated his remaining fortune at $147.4 billion, but that was a dated estimate—not a guaranteed bequest or a fixed cash sum. In July 2026, Buffett set a new deadline: his remaining Berkshire shares should go to four foundations by December 31, 2034, whether he is alive then or not.
What Buffett announced in November 2024
In a November 25, 2024 release, Berkshire Hathaway said Buffett would convert 1,600 Class A shares into 2.4 million Class B shares for four foundations. The allocations were:

These were share gifts, not a promise to transfer a fixed dollar amount. Berkshire’s announcement and the accompanying shareholder comments are available in the November 25, 2024 release.
His children were to oversee distribution after his death
In the 2024 comments, Buffett said his three children would have “full responsibility for gradually distributing all of my Berkshire holdings” after his death. He said those holdings represented 99.5% of his wealth at that time. He had also designated three potential successor trustees in case his children could not serve, but did not publicly identify them. Buffett wrote that he had “never wished to create a dynasty or pursue any plan that extended beyond the children.”

Buffett was 94 when he made the announcement. The Associated Press estimated his remaining fortune at $147.4 billion in November 2024; that valuation reflected the time of its report, not a guaranteed inheritance amount. The AP’s November 2024 report gives that contemporaneous estimate.
How the plan changed by July 2026
In July 2026, Buffett said his remaining Berkshire shares would be donated to the four foundations by December 31, 2034, whether or not he was still alive. “Of course, mortality is unpredictable, but my remaining shares will be donated to the four foundations one way or the other by December 31, 2034,” he said, according to the Associated Press.

The AP reported that those remaining shares were valued at more than $140 billion at the time of the 2026 statement. That, too, was a dated valuation of shares rather than a fixed cash bequest. The 2034 date is the key change from the 2024 arrangement, which placed the gradual distribution in the hands of Buffett’s children after his death. Read the AP’s July 2026 report.
Why the reported dollar figures differ
The figures in coverage of Buffett’s giving plan refer to different dates and measures. They should not be added together or treated as one current valuation:

The core asset is Berkshire stock, not a cash fund
The announcements concern Berkshire Hathaway shares. Their market value can change, so the headline estimate of $147 billion should not be read as an amount the foundations are certain to receive. The amount ultimately transferred depends in part on the value and number of shares remaining when gifts are made.

The recipients are foundations, not a dynasty
The four foundations identified for the 2024 gifts are family-linked charitable organizations. In his Giving Pledge letter, Buffett stated: “More than 99% of my wealth will go to philanthropy during my lifetime or at death.” The letter is hosted by The Giving Pledge.
The 2025 materials are an earlier snapshot
Berkshire’s 2025 annual report said Greg Abel was CEO and described Buffett’s shares as going to philanthropy over roughly the ten years following his passing. That report predates Buffett’s July 2026 public timetable, which set December 31, 2034 as the target date for donating the remaining shares.
