What to Do When You Can’t Make Your Credit Card Minimum Payment

Call your card issuer as soon as you know the minimum is unaffordable. Learn how to prepare, what to ask, what a partial payment may mean, and how to assess counseling, settlement, and consolidation options.

Call your card issuer as soon as you know you can’t pay the minimum. First work out what you can genuinely afford after essential expenses, then explain the shortfall and ask about temporary hardship options. You do not have to wait until you are behind to ask for help. A partial payment may still be treated as late, so confirm what the issuer will do and get any arrangement in writing.

What to do first

A missed minimum can lead to fees, higher interest, account restrictions, collection activity, or credit-score harm. These are possible consequences, not automatic results in every account. Acting promptly gives you a chance to ask the issuer about options before the situation worsens. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises consumers who may have trouble paying to contact their card company; its guidance says you do not need to be behind before asking for help.

  1. Check the amount and due date. Review the statement or account information so you know the minimum due, when it is due, and whether you can pay any amount without putting essential expenses at risk.
  2. Make a quick, realistic budget. Add up income and necessary expenses. Decide what amount, if any, is available for the card and when you could pay it. Do not offer more than you can sustain.
  3. Call the issuer promptly. Explain why you cannot make the full minimum, what amount you can afford, and when you expect your situation might improve. Ask what temporary hardship arrangements are available.
  4. Clarify the terms before agreeing. Ask about the payment amount and duration, interest, fees, account restrictions, and how the account will be reported. Request written confirmation.
  5. Keep a record. Note the date of the call, the representative’s name, any confirmation number, and the terms the issuer provides.

If you can only pay part of the minimum, ask how the issuer will treat that payment. The CFPB warns that paying less than the minimum may still result in a late fee. Do not assume a partial payment makes the account current or replaces the required minimum unless the issuer confirms that under an agreed arrangement.

How to prepare for the call

You do not need a complicated financial plan before calling. Have the account information, due date, minimum amount, and a simple picture of income and essential expenses in front of you. Be candid about whether the problem is temporary or likely to continue. If you can offer a payment, state an amount and date you can realistically meet; if you cannot pay anything now, say so rather than making a promise you may break.

A concise way to frame the conversation is: “I’m calling because a change in my circumstances means I can’t make the full minimum due on my account. After essential expenses, I can afford [amount] on [date]. I expect my situation may change around [timeframe]. What temporary hardship options are available, and what would each mean for my payment, interest, fees, account access, and credit reporting?”

You can make the request more specific by explaining whether you need a lower payment for a defined period, when you expect to resume ordinary payments, and how much you can pay during that period. Ask the representative to explain each option in plain language, including any conditions you must meet. If the issuer offers no arrangement you can afford, say that plainly and ask whether another option is available. Do not leave the call with an assumption that a request itself changed your due date or minimum.

Before ending the call, ask the issuer to send the full arrangement and terms in writing. Make sure you understand what you must pay, when each payment is due, how long the terms last, and what happens if you miss a payment under the arrangement. If anything is unclear, ask for an explanation before accepting. Issuer programs differ, and a requested concession is not guaranteed.

What can happen if you miss the minimum

The consequences depend on the account and the issuer’s actions. The CFPB identifies late fees, higher rates, higher minimum payments, loss of charging privileges, and credit-score damage as potential results. A payment below the contractual minimum does not necessarily prevent these outcomes. Ask the issuer what applies to your account rather than assuming that a partial payment will be treated as an agreed exception.

Possible APR increase after a serious delinquency

There is a specific federal rule worth understanding, but it is not an automatic penalty on the first missed payment. Under Regulation Z, an issuer may increase an APR under the delinquency exception if it has not received the required minimum payment within 60 days after the due date, subject to the rule’s conditions. The rule describes when an increase may be permitted; it does not mean every issuer will raise the rate in every case. If you are concerned about a rate change, ask the issuer what it would mean for your account and what options remain available.

Credit and account effects

A missed minimum may affect your credit and access to the account, but the exact outcome cannot be inferred from the fact of a shortfall alone. Ask how the issuer will report an approved hardship arrangement and whether charging privileges or other account terms could change. Keep the written response with your records so you can refer to what was agreed.

If the issuer offers a hardship arrangement

Compare the offer with what you can actually pay. A lower temporary payment may ease this month’s cash-flow pressure, but the arrangement’s full terms matter: the duration, interest and fees, whether the account can still be used, how payments are applied, and what happens when the temporary period ends. Ask whether regular payments resume automatically or whether you need to contact the issuer again. Do not treat a verbal description as a substitute for the written terms.

Compare the immediate relief with the total cost and the certainty of the offer. A smaller payment may help now but could come with fees, interest changes, or account restrictions; ask the issuer what applies rather than assuming. Confirm that the issuer has accepted the arrangement, not merely received your request, and ask what happens if you cannot meet one of its payments. The key test is whether the agreed amount fits your budget for the full period and whether you understand the consequences if circumstances change.

If the proposed amount is still unaffordable, explain that clearly and ask whether there are other options. Do not agree simply to stop the conversation. A payment plan that relies on money needed for essentials may fail and leave you with both the original problem and a missed arrangement payment.

When credit counseling may help

A nonprofit credit counselor can review your household budget and debts, explain options, and help you consider a debt management plan (DMP). Under a DMP, consumers generally pay the counseling organization, which then pays creditors. A plan may reduce monthly payments or interest and fees, but neither the terms nor creditor participation should be assumed. Confirm that each relevant creditor has accepted the proposed plan.

Before enrolling, ask the counselor:

  • What setup or ongoing fees apply, and when are they charged?
  • What services are included in those fees?
  • How are counselors trained or certified?
  • Have your creditors agreed to the proposed plan and terms?
  • What happens if you cannot make a payment into the plan?

Ask for the agreement in writing and do not sign terms you do not understand. Counseling is especially worth considering if you are struggling with several debts or need help building a budget you can maintain. It is separate from debt settlement, which carries different risks.

A counselor may be useful when you need help reviewing several debts or working out a sustainable budget, but a DMP is not automatically the right choice for every shortfall. Compare its monthly payment, fees, and duration with the issuer’s direct offer. Ask whether each creditor has accepted the plan and what happens if a creditor does not participate. Those details affect both the plan’s usefulness and the amount you still need to manage on your own.

Be cautious about debt settlement offers

Debt settlement companies may promise to negotiate a reduced payoff, but the CFPB warns that these services can be expensive and may encourage people to stop paying creditors while they save money for a settlement. Stopping payments can add late fees and interest, harm credit, increase collection efforts, and expose you to a lawsuit. A settlement is not guaranteed simply because a company advertises one.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • The company charges fees before settling a debt.
  • It guarantees a specific reduction or promises that your debt will disappear.
  • It claims a new government program will erase personal credit-card debt.
  • It tells you to stop paying or to stop communicating with your creditors.

Before paying a company, understand exactly what it will do, what it costs, and what could happen to your accounts while you wait. If the pitch depends on ignoring your card issuer or making an unaffordable promise, it does not solve the immediate cash-flow problem safely.

Consider consolidation only after checking the full cost

A consolidation loan can combine payments, but it does not by itself make an unaffordable budget sustainable. Before taking one, work out why the card debt grew, whether income now covers expenses, and whether a direct request to the issuer for a lower payment or changed due date could address the immediate problem. A nonprofit counselor can help you assess alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the loan’s total cost, fees, and repayment term with the card debt and the payment you can maintain. Be especially careful if the proposal would secure formerly unsecured card debt against a home: failure to repay secured debt can put that asset at risk. A simpler payment schedule is useful only if the underlying repayment remains affordable.

In practical terms, a direct issuer request is aimed at the immediate payment shortfall; counseling can help assess a household budget and may organize payments across creditors; consolidation replaces card balances with a loan that still has to be repaid. Compare each option’s cash-flow relief, total cost, creditor participation, credit and collection exposure, and risk to other assets. Debt settlement is not a default alternative: its fees and the consequences of stopping payments can make the situation worse.

Sources and limits to keep in mind

The CFPB’s consumer guidance, including “Act fast if you can’t pay your credit cards,” recommends contacting the issuer, preparing a realistic account of income and expenses, and asking about available help. The agency’s page was last reviewed September 2, 2026. The CFPB handout “Act fast if you can’t pay your credit cards” states: “You do not need to be behind on your payments to ask for help!” Issuer-specific programs and counseling terms can change, so confirm the current terms directly before relying on an offer. The possible outcomes described here are not a prediction of what will happen to any one account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pay what I can if I cannot afford the minimum?

Ask your issuer how it will treat a partial payment before sending it. The CFPB says paying less than the minimum may still result in a late fee, and a partial payment does not necessarily make the account current. If the issuer agrees to a different amount, get the arrangement and its terms in writing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to miss a payment before I can ask my card issuer for help?

No. The CFPB says you do not need to be behind on payments to ask for help. Call promptly, explain why you cannot pay the full minimum, state what you can genuinely afford and when you expect your situation may change, and ask about temporary options.

Is credit counseling the same as debt settlement?

No. A credit counselor can review your budget and debts and may help arrange a debt management plan, subject to fees, terms, and creditor participation. Debt settlement companies may charge expensive fees and encourage you to stop paying creditors, which can add interest and fees, harm credit, increase collection activity, or lead to a lawsuit.

The Bottom Line

If the minimum is out of reach, call the issuer now with a realistic budget and a specific amount you can afford. Ask about hardship terms and their effects on fees, interest, account access, and reporting; get any agreement in writing. Consider nonprofit counseling if you need help with several debts, and treat settlement or consolidation pitches cautiously until you understand their full cost and risks.
