Bank stocks represent businesses typically built around taking deposits and making loans. Brokerage stocks represent businesses typically built around facilitating securities transactions and serving investors, often through custody, advice, financing, and related services. The distinction is useful, but it is not a clean dividing line: diversified financial companies may operate both kinds of businesses. To understand a stock, look past its label and examine the company’s business mix, funding, rate exposure, credit and market risks, and disclosures.
What distinguishes a bank from a brokerage?
A traditional bank’s central role is to accept deposits and lend money. It may also hold securities and earn fees from services such as asset management and brokerage. That mix means its results can reflect both the spread between what it earns on assets and pays for funding, and income from noninterest businesses. PNC, for example, identifies lending, securities portfolios, asset management, and brokerage services among its sources of interest and noninterest income in its 2025 Form 10-K.

A brokerage firm’s core role is generally to facilitate securities transactions for customers. Depending on the firm, it may also provide custody, investment advice, margin loans, financing, and securities lending. The legal definition of a broker is not a complete way to classify every public company: the FDIC’s securities-law excerpts describe the definition and note exemptions applicable to banks, while diversified firms can conduct multiple types of financial business. The FDIC’s securities-law excerpts are useful background, not a substitute for examining an issuer’s actual operations.

Customer cash also illustrates why the categories are not interchangeable. Interactive Brokers describes customer cash swept into insured banks through its deposit sweep program, alongside prime brokerage services that include financing and securities lending, in its 2024 Form 10-K. A brokerage can therefore connect customer cash to banks without being the same kind of business as a traditional deposit-taking bank.

How the business models differ
The following comparison describes typical sources of activity and risk, not a rule that applies uniformly to every issuer. A company’s filing is needed to establish how much each line matters to its own results.
| Dimension | Bank-oriented business | Brokerage-oriented business |
|---|---|---|
| Core customer activity | Accepting deposits and extending loans; may also provide securities, asset-management, and brokerage services. | Facilitating securities transactions; may also provide custody, advice, margin lending, financing, and securities lending. |
| Potential revenue sources | Interest income from loans and securities, less funding costs, plus fees from other businesses. PNC’s 2025 filing lists lending, securities portfolios, asset management, and brokerage among its income sources. | Trading and advisory activity, client assets, financing and securities lending, and interest earned on cash and other assets. Interactive Brokers describes margin loans, securities lending, and swept customer cash as interest-earning assets in its 2024 filing. |
| Funding and cash relationships | Deposits can be a funding source; the company’s dependence on them and other funding should be checked in its disclosures. | Customer cash may be held or swept to banks, and the firm may use other financing. The specific arrangements and exposures vary by issuer. |
| Risks to investigate | Borrower defaults, deposit competition or withdrawals, and how interest rates affect asset yields and funding costs. | Changes in market activity, client cash levels, asset prices, interest rates, and financing exposures, as well as the firm’s particular trading and securities activities. |
| Category-level safety, profitability, or rate sensitivity | Not established as a general advantage over brokerage companies; requires comparable issuer data over a defined period. | Not established as a general advantage over banks; requires comparable issuer data over a defined period. |
Why the labels blur at large financial companies
Some public companies combine banking, brokerage, investment banking, wealth management, and other services. A shorthand label such as “bank” or “broker” can conceal that mix. Segment disclosures show where the business is organized, while the descriptions of products and risk factors help explain what the segments actually do.
JPMorgan Chase reports Consumer & Community Banking, Commercial & Investment Bank, and Asset & Wealth Management segments in its 2024 Form 10-K. Charles Schwab reports Investor Services and Advisor Services and describes a business spanning brokerage, investment advisory, banking, and trust services in its 2025 Form 10-K. These examples show why segment mix matters more than a simple category name; they do not establish that either company’s mix is typical of every bank or brokerage.
Schwab says that offering banking, wealth, and asset-management services to broker-dealer clients can serve a wider array of needs and diversify revenue streams. That is the company’s description of its strategy, not proof that bundled services always stabilize earnings. Investors should look at the actual contribution of each line and how the company says those lines behave under different conditions.
What can move earnings—and what to read in the filings
For banks: lending, deposits, securities, and fees
For a bank, start with how much business comes from loans, how those loans are funded, and what the company earns from securities and fee-based operations. Loan demand affects the opportunity to lend; borrower repayment affects credit results. Deposit behavior and competition can affect funding availability and cost. Interest-rate changes can affect both the yield on assets and what a bank must pay for funding. The direction and size of the effect depend on the company’s balance sheet and repricing profile, so the word “bank” alone cannot tell an investor whether a rate change will help or hurt.
Use the company’s own filings to determine the scale of these exposures. Look for discussion of loan quality, funding sources, securities portfolios, rate sensitivity, and the sources of interest and noninterest income. A bank with substantial fee businesses still has to be assessed on those businesses as well as its lending and funding; the presence of one line does not erase the risks of another.

Pay attention to how management groups products in the segment footnotes. A line called “commercial banking,” for example, may contain both lending and treasury services, while “consumer” may include deposits, cards, and other activities. Read the accompanying narrative and risk factors instead of assuming that a segment label has the same meaning at every institution. Also distinguish income earned from assets from fees earned for services: they can react differently to rates, borrower behavior, and customer activity.

For a brokerage, examine the role of trading and advisory activity, the size and nature of client assets, and any financing or securities-lending business. Also check whether interest earned on customer cash and other assets is material. Interactive Brokers’ 2024 filing describes customer margin loans, securities lending, and customer cash balances swept to banks as components of interest-earning assets. Those activities can connect brokerage results to client activity, cash balances, interest rates, and financing conditions.
A brokerage with multiple business lines may not respond to market conditions in one uniform way. Changes in asset prices can affect client assets; changes in trading or advisory activity can affect activity-linked income; and changes in cash levels or rates can affect interest-related income. The issuer’s own disclosures are needed to understand the scale and interaction of those channels. Schwab’s mix of brokerage, advisory, banking, and trust services is one example of why it is worth reading beyond the company’s broad category label.
When reviewing a brokerage filing, separate client-asset measures from the company’s own assets. Client balances can indicate the scale of the platform, but they are not automatically the same as revenue or profit. Ask which activities generate commissions, advisory fees, spreads, interest, or other income, and whether the company describes financing or securities lending as material. The risk discussion may also explain how market volatility, collateral values, or changes in customer borrowing affect the business.
For either kind: compare exposures, not stereotypes
Neither category can be described as inherently safer, more profitable, or more sensitive to interest rates on the evidence available here. Such a comparison needs a defined time period, consistent measures, and current data for the specific issuers being compared. A broad category can conceal large differences in business mix, balance-sheet exposure, and financing. Avoid treating a general description of a business model as a forecast of a particular stock’s return.

- Map the business mix. Identify how revenue and earnings are divided among lending, deposit services, brokerage, wealth management, and other lines. Check whether reported segments combine activities that matter to your comparison.
- Trace the funding. Determine how the business depends on deposits, client cash, wholesale borrowing, or other funding sources. Read how the company describes those sources and the risks of changes in their availability or cost.
- Understand interest-rate exposure. Identify which assets and liabilities reprice and how the issuer says rate changes could affect margins or interest-related income. Do not infer the effect from the bank or brokerage label alone.
- Check credit and market exposures. For a bank, examine loan quality and borrower risk. For a brokerage, examine trading, financing, securities-lending, and client-activity exposures. A diversified company may have both sets of risks.
- Compare capital, liquidity, and valuation using suitable measures. Choose measures that fit the businesses being compared, and account for differences in accounting and business mix. Then consider the price paid for earnings; a strong business does not by itself establish that its shares are attractively valued.
- Read the latest filings and risk factors. Review the issuer’s segment descriptions, financial statements, and risk disclosures together. Business lines, results, and exposures can change between reporting periods, so date the figures and statements you rely on.
There is no single cross-category metric established here that makes a bank and a brokerage directly comparable. Isolated figures can mislead when reporting periods, business mixes, or metric definitions differ. When using company-specific numbers, identify the company, reporting year, and measure, and compare like with like.
Common comparison mistakes
- Assuming the label tells you the balance sheet. A bank may have major securities, wealth, or brokerage operations, and a brokerage may earn interest through cash sweeps, margin loans, or other financing.
- Treating client money as company capital. Customer cash or securities held through an account describe a customer relationship, not automatically an asset that belongs to the public company.
- Comparing unlike revenue totals. Interest income, transaction-linked income, advisory fees, and asset-based measures can have different definitions. Use the issuer’s notes and the same reporting period.
- Calling diversification a guarantee. Schwab describes a broader service offering as a way to diversify revenue, but that strategic description is not proof that earnings will be stable in every environment.
- Using account protection to judge stock risk. Deposit or brokerage-account protections address customer assets under specified conditions. They do not insure the market value of shares in the bank or brokerage company.
- Projecting rate effects from a headline. Repricing dates, funding mix, client cash, and securities holdings determine the effect. Read the issuer’s rate-sensitivity discussion instead.
Keep stock risk separate from customer-account protection
Buying a company’s stock means investing in that company; it is not the same as holding a bank deposit or securities in a brokerage account. Protection rules for customer assets do not insure the market value of the company’s shares.
FINRA’s Investor’s Guide to Securities Industry Disputes explains: “While SIPC does not insure against losses from declines in the market value of your securities, SIPC does provide limited customer protection by replacing certain customer assets if a firm becomes insolvent or bankrupt.” This is not a promise that every account balance is protected, and it does not prevent an investment from losing value.
If you are evaluating a brokerage firm as a place to hold an account, rather than evaluating its stock, FINRA advises investors to check the firm’s registration and background, understand fees and account features, and verify SIPC membership. Those checks address a different question from whether the brokerage company’s shares suit your investment objectives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a fair comparison
A useful comparison starts with two specific companies and a common reporting period. First, classify each company’s actual activities, including significant businesses outside its primary label. Next, compare the operating drivers that are relevant to both companies while keeping unlike items separate: lending and deposit funding for a bank-oriented firm; client assets, activity, financing, and securities services for a brokerage-oriented firm. For diversified issuers, compare both segment-level and company-wide disclosures.
Then assess risks and valuation in context. A ratio or earnings figure can mean different things when the companies have different business mixes or accounting presentations. Record the period and definition for each measure, and distinguish historical results from expectations. Without current issuer-specific analysis, the broad business-model distinction is a starting point for research, not a basis for choosing one stock category over another.

Questions investors often ask
Are brokerage stocks and bank stocks mutually exclusive?
No. Large financial groups can combine consumer or commercial banking, investment banking, brokerage, wealth management, and trust services. Segment disclosures are more informative than the company’s informal label.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a brokerage become a bank when it sweeps cash to insured banks?
Not necessarily. A brokerage can arrange for customer cash to be swept into banks while continuing to operate primarily as a securities firm. The firm’s filing explains the legal and operational arrangement.
Which type of stock is safer?
The category alone does not answer that question. Safety depends on the particular company’s funding, credit, market, liquidity, capital, and business exposures, as well as the price paid for its shares.
How do interest rates affect each category?
Rates can change bank asset yields and deposit or other funding costs. For brokerages, rates can affect interest earned on cash and other assets, financing, client balances, and activity. The result depends on each issuer’s repricing profile and disclosures.
Does SIPC protect my brokerage stock investment?
No. SIPC protection concerns certain customer assets if a brokerage becomes insolvent or bankrupt; it does not protect against a decline in the market value of securities. Shares of the brokerage company remain an investment in that company.
What should I read first in a company filing?
Start with the business and segment descriptions, sources of interest and noninterest income, funding discussion, rate sensitivity, credit and market risk factors, and capital and liquidity information. Then check that the reporting period and definitions match those of the company you are comparing.
