What to Do When a Stock You Own Drops Sharply

When a stock falls sharply, first identify what changed. Then assess the investment case, your time horizon, liquidity needs and portfolio exposure before deciding what to do.

Pause before reacting. A sharp drop by itself does not tell you whether to hold or sell. First find out what changed, then compare the current investment case with your financial plan, time horizon, liquidity needs and the stock’s place in your portfolio. There is no universal rule that a falling share price makes a stock a bargain—or means it is time to sell.

Start by finding out what changed

A decline can follow news about the company, a move affecting its industry or the broader market, or another event. Those causes matter because they can have different implications for the business and for your investment plan. Investor.gov notes that share prices may be affected by factors within a company’s control, such as a faulty product, as well as events outside its control, including political or market developments. Its Stocks – FAQs explains stock-price movements and stock-specific risk.

Before deciding, establish what happened and when. Look for the underlying announcement or event rather than relying on a price move, a social-media post, or a dramatic headline alone. Separate confirmed information from interpretation: an event may be factual while its eventual effect on the company remains uncertain. If the drop coincided with a broad market or industry move, that context can help explain the price action, but it does not settle whether this particular holding still belongs in your portfolio.

  • Identify whether there was company-specific news, an industry-wide development, a broader market move, or more than one factor.
  • Note what is known, what remains uncertain, and whether the event changes an assumption you relied on when buying.
  • Avoid treating the speed or size of the decline as evidence, on its own, that the stock will rebound or fall further.

Revisit the reason you bought it

Write down the original reasons you chose the stock before revising them in light of the drop. This helps distinguish a changed investment case from the discomfort of seeing a lower price. Compare each reason with what is known now: does it still appear valid, has a relevant risk changed, or has an assumption become uncertain? The purpose is not to prove that the original decision was right; it is to decide whether the holding still makes sense based on current facts and your circumstances.

Questions to ask about the investment case

  • What specific facts or expectations supported the purchase?
  • Has new information materially changed those facts or expectations?
  • Are there risks that now matter more to your decision than they did when you bought?
  • What would make you reconsider the holding, and can you identify that condition using information rather than a target price chosen only to avoid acknowledging a loss?

Do not substitute a generic rule for company-specific analysis. Official investor-education sources explain how prices, risk and personal circumstances matter, but they have not evaluated your stock. A lower price is not proof of better value, and there is no assurance of recovery. If you cannot determine what changed or how it affects your original reasons, treat that as unresolved uncertainty—not as evidence that you must buy more, hold, or sell.

Check whether the holding still fits your plan

An investment decision depends on more than the company. Your goals, risk tolerance, financial situation and time horizon affect what level of risk is appropriate for you. The SEC’s Things to Consider Before You Make Investing Decisions discusses these considerations, while Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification explains how allocation relates to time horizon and risk tolerance.

Measure the position in context

Consider how much of your overall portfolio is exposed to this stock and whether you also have substantial exposure to the same industry or to other investments affected by the same risks. A holding that represents a large share of your portfolio can have a different effect on your finances than a small one, even if the price decline is identical. Also consider whether your income or other financial interests are tied to the same company or sector; concentration may extend beyond the investment account.

Assess both your willingness and your financial capacity to accept further losses. Willingness is about how much volatility you can tolerate without making a decision you later regret. Capacity is about whether a loss would interfere with essential spending or other goals. They are related but not interchangeable: someone comfortable with volatility may still need the money soon, while someone with a long horizon may nonetheless be unwilling to bear a large concentrated risk.

Match risk to when you need the money

Be especially careful if the money is earmarked for a near-term goal. Investor.gov’s Gauge Your Risk Tolerance says investors saving for a goal five years or less away should avoid risky investments because they may have to sell at a loss when the money is needed. That is a time-horizon caution, not a measured prediction or a guarantee that every investor should use the same allocation.

Ask when you expect to need the money and whether you could meet that need without depending on this stock’s recovery. If the answer is no, the time pressure is part of the decision; waiting for a hoped-for rebound does not remove it. If the money is intended for a distant goal, you may have more time to assess events, but a longer horizon does not make a particular company’s risks disappear.

Consider diversification and available cash

Diversification spreads exposure across investments so that one holding has less influence on the whole portfolio. It can reduce the impact of a single investment’s decline, but it cannot guarantee a gain or prevent losses. An exchange-traded fund or mutual fund is not automatically diversified if it focuses narrowly on one industry. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation guidance describes diversification and rebalancing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at the portfolio’s aggregate exposure rather than assuming that this stock’s eventual recovery will correct an overly concentrated allocation. If the position has grown large relative to your intended mix, that is a separate portfolio question from whether the company’s business prospects remain attractive. A decision to reduce concentration can be based on your plan, not only on a forecast about the next price move.

Liquidity matters as well. If an unexpected expense would force you to sell investments at an inconvenient time, consider whether you have accessible money set aside for emergencies. In “Don’t Panic, Plan It!,” Lori Schock, then a former SEC investor education director, discussed keeping money for unexpected needs in a less risky, accessible form, such as an FDIC-insured bank account. The page explicitly says it is no longer being updated, so treat it as general planning context rather than current individualized guidance.

Compare holding, trimming and selling

These are possible choices, not recommendations. Compare them against the same questions—what changed in the investment case, how much risk the position adds, when you need the money, and what you can afford to lose. None of the choices guarantees a better outcome, and the right one cannot be determined from the price drop alone.

Choice Questions to weigh What it does not establish
Hold Do the original reasons for owning the stock still appear valid? Does the position remain suitable for your time horizon, risk tolerance and portfolio? Holding does not guarantee a recovery or mean the current investment case is unchanged.
Trim Would a smaller position better fit your plan or reduce exposure to one company, sector or related source of risk? Reducing the position does not determine whether the remaining shares are attractive or how the price will move.
Sell Have the facts or risks changed enough that the holding no longer fits your investment case or financial needs? Do you need the money on a schedule that makes further risk unsuitable? Selling does not prove that a recovery was impossible or that the decision would be right for another investor.

Before acting, consider whether execution and tax details could affect your individual decision. Current tax rules, broker policies and order mechanics are outside the scope of the official guidance cited here; check the relevant authoritative information or consult a qualified professional rather than assuming those details are the same for every account or transaction.

Use a short decision process before acting

  1. Pause and record the facts. Write down the event or information associated with the decline, when it occurred and what remains uncertain. Do not make the price move itself your explanation.
  2. Write down your original case. List the reasons you bought the stock, then mark which still appear supported and which may have changed. Do not add a new justification simply because the price is lower.
  3. Check your financial constraints. Identify when you may need the money, whether an unexpected expense could force a sale, and how much loss you could absorb without disrupting essential needs or other goals.
  4. Review the whole portfolio. Estimate the stock’s role and exposure alongside related holdings and other investments. Decide whether the position is consistent with the allocation you intend to maintain.
  5. Choose the action that fits the plan. If you cannot yet distinguish reliable facts from uncertainty, take time to obtain relevant information rather than pretending that a universal hold-or-sell rule exists. Seek individualized professional help if the decision exceeds what you can assess confidently.
  6. Set a reason to review again. Identify what future information or change in your circumstances would warrant revisiting the decision. This makes a review responsive to facts rather than every fluctuation in price.

When individualized advice may help

A qualified financial professional may help you assess risk tolerance, goals, liquidity and portfolio concentration in light of your complete circumstances. A professional’s role is not to guarantee a stock’s recovery or remove investment risk. Ask how the person is qualified, how they are paid, and whether they have conflicts that could affect the advice. The SEC’s investor guidance is a starting point for thinking through investment decisions, but it cannot determine the right action for a specific investor or security.

Investor.gov’s Investor.gov Tips for 2026, dated March 31, 2026, also discusses risk tolerance, time frame and fees. Use it as general investor education; it does not assess a particular stock or replace advice based on your individual finances.
