FDIC insurance protects eligible deposits when an insured bank fails; SIPC protection helps return missing customer cash and securities when a SIPC-member brokerage fails. Neither program reimburses ordinary investment losses. To understand which may apply, identify the institution holding the asset, the asset type, and how the account is owned.

That distinction answers the common question, “Is my money protected if my bank or brokerage fails?” The answer depends not just on whether the balance looks like cash, but on where it is held, what kind of property it is, and whether the relevant bank or brokerage meets the program’s requirements. The two programs have different triggers and limits, so the shared $250,000 figure should not be treated as equivalent protection.

FDIC vs. SIPC at a glance

Question FDIC insurance SIPC protection
What event can trigger protection? Failure of an insured bank. Failure of a SIPC-member brokerage when customer property is missing.
What property can qualify? Eligible bank deposits, including checking and savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit (CDs). Customer securities and qualifying cash held by the brokerage.
Published limit $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per account ownership category. Up to $500,000 per customer in a separate capacity, including a $250,000 limit for cash.
How are accounts grouped? Deposits in the same ownership category at the same insured bank are added together. Qualifying categories may have separate coverage. Accounts held in the same capacity at the same brokerage are combined. Qualifying separate capacities may have separate coverage.
What is not protected? Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and life insurance products are not insured deposits. Market losses, investment performance, and property outside SIPC’s coverage are not protected.

The $250,000 figures are not interchangeable. The FDIC figure is the standard limit for deposits in one ownership category at one insured bank. SIPC’s $250,000 figure is the cash sublimit within its broader $500,000 limit per separate capacity.

In practical terms, FDIC insurance is about eligible deposits at an insured bank. SIPC protection is about restoring eligible customer property that is missing after a member brokerage fails. Neither is a general promise that an account balance or investment will keep its value. If a bank or brokerage remains open but an investment loses value, these programs do not erase that ordinary market loss.

What FDIC insurance covers

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures qualifying deposits at banks insured by the FDIC. Its standard amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category. Coverage is not calculated separately for every account or branch: deposits within the same category at the same insured bank are aggregated. Deposits at separately chartered insured banks are insured separately. FDIC Deposit Insurance FAQs

The FDIC describes the standard amount as “$250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.” Each part of that description matters. The depositor is the person or entity whose funds are held; the bank is the insured institution; and the category depends on how the account is owned. A different branch address or a second account number at the same bank does not by itself create a new limit.

Eligible deposit products

Common qualifying deposits include checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and CDs. The key distinction is whether the asset is a deposit at an insured bank—not whether an account or product is described casually as “cash.”

Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, and life insurance products are not FDIC-insured deposits. In particular, a money market deposit account is different from a money market mutual fund. A brokerage sweep may also involve a particular bank-deposit arrangement; check its disclosures to establish where funds are held and what coverage, if any, applies.

Some product names can sound similar while describing different assets. A money market deposit account is a bank deposit product; a money market mutual fund is an investment. The FDIC’s list of qualifying deposits includes CDs, but the account context still matters: SIPC also lists CDs among securities held for brokerage customers. Do not infer which program applies from the product name alone. Determine whether the asset is a deposit at an insured bank or is held as customer property at a brokerage, then review the relevant account documents.

The same caution applies to balances displayed through a financial app or brokerage. A screen showing dollars does not establish that funds are a bank deposit, nor does the word “sweep” settle the question. A sweep may involve a bank-deposit arrangement, but its specific structure and disclosures should be checked before describing it as FDIC-insured.

Ownership categories and aggregation

The FDIC recognizes categories that include single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, trust accounts, employee benefit plan accounts, business accounts, and government accounts. A category can receive separate coverage only when its applicable requirements are met. Merely opening multiple accounts in one category at the same bank does not create a new limit for each account. For example, a person with several single-owner deposit accounts at one insured bank generally counts those deposits together for the single-account category. A joint account or qualifying retirement account is assessed under its own category rules rather than simply added to that single-account total. The exact calculation depends on ownership and account details.

This means that asking “Does the $250,000 limit apply per account?” needs a qualified answer: generally, no. The limit is not assigned separately to each checking, savings, or CD account. It is calculated by depositor, insured bank, and ownership category. If the same depositor has multiple accounts in the same category at that bank, those deposits are added together. A category that is separately recognized may be treated separately if its requirements are satisfied.

Nor does moving an account to another branch of the same insured bank necessarily change the calculation. By contrast, deposits at separately chartered insured banks are insured separately. Where two institutions share a brand or have a relationship, the relevant question is which insured bank actually holds the deposit—not how many names or locations appear on a statement.

Categories such as trusts, businesses, and employee benefit plans can have specific requirements. The category label alone does not establish that a balance qualifies for separate treatment. If account ownership or titling is complex, use the FDIC’s guidance and estimator rather than assuming that a new account or a different label creates extra coverage.

When FDIC coverage applies

FDIC insurance is automatic for qualifying deposits at an FDIC-insured institution; customers do not buy a separate policy. If an insured bank fails, coverage includes principal and accrued interest through the date of failure, subject to the applicable limit and ownership rules. The institution must actually be FDIC-insured, and the balance and account structure must qualify.

Automatic coverage does not mean every account at any bank is covered without conditions. Confirm the institution’s FDIC status and check that the account is a qualifying deposit. Coverage is tied to the insured bank, not just a financial brand, app, or account provider that may work with a bank. The FDIC’s BankFind tool can help identify an institution, and EDIE can help estimate coverage using information about balances and ownership.

What SIPC protection covers

The Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) is a Congress-created corporation that helps restore customer property when a member brokerage fails financially and customer assets are missing. SIPC may advance up to $500,000 per customer in a separate capacity, of which no more than $250,000 can be for cash. These limits concern the return of customer property in a brokerage failure; they do not insure an investment’s value. SIPC: How SIPC Protects You

The trigger is therefore narrower than “my investments did badly.” There must be a failure of a brokerage that is a SIPC member, and customer property must be missing. SIPC helps address the shortfall in customer property; it does not promise a particular account value or serve as protection against a drop in markets.

Assets that may qualify

SIPC identifies securities held for customers by a broker such as stocks, bonds, Treasury securities, CDs, mutual funds, and money market mutual funds. Cash qualifies when held in connection with the purchase or sale of securities. The type of asset and its connection to the brokerage account matter; cash is not automatically covered just because it appears in a brokerage account.

The cash sublimit is part of the broader limit, not an additional $250,000 on top of the $500,000. In other words, the headline protection is up to $500,000 in a separate capacity, with up to $250,000 of that amount for cash. Readers should not treat the two figures as additive limits or assume that every cash balance meets the eligibility condition.

SIPC does not protect securities from falling in market value, guarantee investment performance, or reimburse losses caused by investment advice. It also does not protect assets held directly by an investor or assets at a firm that is not a SIPC member. Many digital or crypto assets that are not securities under applicable law, along with various other instruments, are outside coverage. Consult SIPC’s explanation for the scope and exclusions applicable to a particular asset. SIPC: How SIPC Protects You

These limits also do not transform SIPC into a guarantee of an investment. If a stock falls in price, a bond performs poorly, or a mutual fund does not meet expectations, SIPC does not reimburse the decline. SIPC states plainly, “SIPC does NOT protect market losses.” Its role is tied to missing customer property following a member brokerage failure, not the performance of the property that remains in an account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For digital assets, do not assume that a product is protected because it is available through a brokerage-like platform. The research identifies many digital or crypto assets that are not securities under applicable law as outside SIPC coverage. The relevant classification and custody arrangement matter, so check the official explanation for a specific asset rather than applying the general securities rule automatically.

Separate capacity and account aggregation

SIPC combines accounts held in the same capacity at the same brokerage. Its examples of distinct capacities include individual, joint, corporation, trust, IRA, Roth IRA, estate, and guardianship accounts. Separate treatment depends on meeting the relevant rules; accounts created solely to increase protection do not qualify simply because they have different labels. SIPC: How SIPC Protects You

As a result, the number of accounts alone does not determine the limit. The relevant questions are which brokerage carries the accounts and whether they are held in the same or a qualifying separate capacity.

For example, several accounts held in the same capacity at one brokerage are combined for the applicable limit; opening another account under that same capacity does not automatically create another separate limit. A joint account or an IRA may be a distinct capacity from an individual account, subject to the relevant rules. The way accounts are titled and the legal brokerage entity carrying them are therefore more useful than simply counting statements or logins.

Separate capacity is not a device for manufacturing additional protection. SIPC’s explanation specifically excludes arrangements created solely to increase protection. If multiple accounts, trusts, or entities are involved, use SIPC’s guidance and the brokerage’s account records to identify the capacities involved; do not assume that a different account label guarantees separate treatment.

Which protection applies to brokerage cash?

There is no single answer based on the word “cash.” A bank deposit, a brokerage cash balance awaiting a securities transaction, and a money market mutual fund are different arrangements.

  • Deposit at an insured bank: eligible for FDIC insurance subject to the bank, ownership category, and limit.
  • Cash at a brokerage: SIPC coverage may apply if the cash is held in connection with buying or selling securities and the brokerage is a SIPC member; the cash sublimit is $250,000 within the $500,000 separate-capacity limit.
  • Money market mutual fund: treated as a security in SIPC’s explanation, not as an FDIC-insured bank deposit.
  • Sweep arrangement: check the account agreement and disclosures to determine whether funds are deposited at a bank or remain at the brokerage, and which entity holds them.

Do not infer protection from an app’s name, an account label, or the fact that a balance is shown in dollars. The legal institution and the arrangement holding the asset determine which program could be relevant.

This is why “Is cash in my brokerage account FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected?” cannot be answered from the word cash alone. If it is a deposit at an insured bank, FDIC rules may be relevant. If it is qualifying brokerage cash connected with securities transactions, SIPC rules may be relevant when the carrying firm is a member and customer property is missing after failure. If the balance is invested in a money market mutual fund, SIPC treats it as a security rather than as a bank deposit. Check the disclosures and the account’s legal structure before drawing a conclusion.

A CD illustrates the importance of context as well. CDs are among the qualifying FDIC deposit products when held as deposits at insured banks, and SIPC also identifies CDs among securities held for brokerage customers. The product’s name by itself does not tell you which protection applies; the custody and account arrangement do.

How to check your own coverage

  1. Identify the institution holding each asset. For bank deposits, find the insured bank named in account documents. For a brokerage account, identify the legal carrying firm, not only the app or brand through which you access it.
  2. Check FDIC status for a bank. Use FDIC BankFind to look up the institution. Confirm that the name and charter correspond to the bank holding the deposit.
  3. Estimate bank-deposit coverage. Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) and provide the ownership and balance information it requests. Review the result alongside account records, especially if multiple owners, trusts, businesses, or other categories are involved.
  4. Check brokerage membership. Look up the specific carrying firm on SIPC’s member list. A related company’s name or a trading app’s brand does not by itself establish that the entity holding customer property is a member.
  5. Classify the property and account capacity. Separate deposits from securities and identify how accounts are titled. For brokerage cash, check whether it is held in connection with securities transactions and review the brokerage’s disclosures.
  6. Seek agency guidance for complex structures. Trusts, pass-through deposits, business accounts, and multiple brokerage capacities can have requirements that are not resolved by counting accounts. Use the agencies’ guidance for the specific arrangement rather than assuming an extra account creates extra coverage.

For a bank account, begin with the institution and deposit type, then consider total deposits in each ownership category at that insured bank. EDIE is useful for estimating the result, but it needs accurate information about the account’s balances and ownership. For a brokerage, first identify the entity that actually carries the account; a familiar brand or affiliated company is not a substitute for checking that firm on SIPC’s member list.

Keep the account agreement and statements available when checking. They can help distinguish a bank deposit from brokerage property and show how an account is titled. If an arrangement includes trusts, pass-through deposits, business ownership, or more than one brokerage capacity, the agencies’ detailed guidance is more appropriate than a simple per-account calculation.

Common misunderstandings

“The limit is per account.”

Not generally. FDIC adds together deposits in the same category at the same insured bank. SIPC combines accounts in the same capacity at the same brokerage. Account count alone does not establish additional protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For FDIC coverage, the grouping is by depositor, insured bank, and ownership category. For SIPC, the grouping is by customer, brokerage, and separate capacity. Both systems require looking across accounts rather than assigning a fresh headline amount to every account number.

“SIPC will reimburse a bad investment.”

No. SIPC addresses missing customer property after a member brokerage fails; it does not make up a decline in a security’s market price or a failed investment thesis. SIPC states, “SIPC does NOT protect market losses.” SIPC: How SIPC Protects You

“Anything called cash has the same protection.”

No. A qualifying bank deposit may be FDIC-insured, while qualifying brokerage cash may fall under SIPC rules. A money market mutual fund is a security, and cash at a broker is not automatically SIPC-protected without meeting the relevant conditions.

“A brokerage’s name proves SIPC coverage.”

No. Confirm the precise legal firm that carries the account on SIPC’s member list. Similar names and affiliated entities can be distinct firms.

“The same $250,000 figure means the programs work the same way.”

No. The FDIC’s standard limit applies to eligible deposits per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. SIPC’s $250,000 figure is a cash limit within a broader $500,000 amount per customer in a separate capacity. The triggers and the assets covered differ as well.

Frequently asked questions

FDIC vs. SIPC: what’s the difference?

FDIC insurance covers qualifying deposits at insured banks if the bank fails. SIPC helps restore missing customer securities and qualifying cash if a SIPC-member brokerage fails. FDIC coverage is organized by depositor, bank, and ownership category; SIPC limits are organized by customer, brokerage, and separate capacity.

Is my money protected if my bank or brokerage fails?

It may be, depending on where the money is held, whether the institution is insured or a SIPC member, the kind of asset, and account ownership. Eligible bank deposits may receive FDIC coverage after an insured bank failure. Eligible customer property may receive SIPC protection after a member brokerage failure if property is missing. Verify the institution and the account structure rather than relying on the account name alone.

Does SIPC cover market losses?

No. SIPC does not protect against a security’s market value declining or an investment failing to perform. Its protection concerns missing customer property in the failure of a SIPC-member brokerage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is cash in my brokerage account FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected?

It depends on the arrangement. Cash deposited at an insured bank may qualify for FDIC insurance. Brokerage cash may qualify for SIPC protection when held in connection with purchasing or selling securities, subject to SIPC’s limits and the member-firm requirement. A money market mutual fund is treated as a security under SIPC’s explanation, not as an FDIC-insured bank deposit. Review the brokerage disclosures to find where the funds are held.

Does the $250,000 limit apply per account?

Not in the simple sense of a separate limit for every account. FDIC combines same-category deposits at the same insured bank. SIPC combines accounts in the same capacity at the same brokerage. The FDIC’s $250,000 standard amount and SIPC’s $250,000 cash sublimit also refer to different coverage rules.

How can I verify whether a bank or brokerage qualifies?

Use FDIC BankFind to confirm the bank and EDIE to estimate deposit coverage. For a brokerage, identify the legal carrying firm and check that specific entity against SIPC’s member list. If your accounts involve trusts, businesses, or multiple ownership capacities, review agency guidance for those arrangements.
