If you’ve been laid off and your job search is going nowhere, handle the deadlines first: apply for unemployment in the state where you worked, make an active choice about health coverage, and gather your benefit and retirement-plan documents. Then get a fresh assessment of your search through an American Job Center or your state’s layoff-response services. A prolonged search is stressful, but it does not mean you are doing something wrong; no single tactic or timeline guarantees a new job.
Protect income and keep track of deadlines
Apply for unemployment through the state program
There is no federal unemployment-insurance program. State agencies decide eligibility, benefit amounts, and continuing requirements. Many states consider recent earnings and work history, and may require ongoing certifications or job-search activity. Being laid off does not by itself establish that you qualify or determine how much you will receive. Check the official U.S. Department of Labor unemployment insurance guidance and file promptly with the state agency.

In most cases, apply in the state where you worked. If you worked remotely, crossed state lines, or worked in more than one state, contact a state unemployment office for direction rather than guessing. Save your confirmation number, respond to agency requests, and follow the instructions for certifications and work searches in your state.

Contact your former employer or plan administrators to confirm your final pay and any severance terms, when job-based health coverage ends, how to obtain COBRA election information, and where to get retirement-plan documents. Write down the last day of active health coverage and the date a COBRA election notice arrives so you can track separate enrollment deadlines.

Keep your retirement plan’s Summary Plan Description, account statements, and administrator contact details. The Department of Labor explains how to protect retirement benefits after leaving a job. Ask the administrator about your benefits, distribution rules, and rollover options before moving money or taking a distribution.
Choose health coverage before a deadline passes
Losing job-based coverage generally opens a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov says to apply within 60 days of losing that coverage. You may also have the option of COBRA, Medicaid or CHIP if eligible, or enrollment in an eligible spouse or family member’s employer plan. Compare actual premiums and coverage before deciding; a plan’s effective date, doctors, prescriptions, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum all matter.
Rank #2
| Option | What to check | Timing and cost |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace plan | Premium after any eligible savings, start date, provider network, prescriptions, deductible, and out-of-pocket maximum. | Generally apply within 60 days of losing job-based coverage. Eligibility for premium tax credits or cost-sharing savings depends on household and income information. The application can also screen for Medicaid or CHIP. HealthCare.gov: If you lose job-based coverage. |
| COBRA | Whether you can keep the former group plan and its provider access, and the full premium you would owe. | The election window is generally 60 days from the later of the coverage ending or the election notice. You typically pay the full premium plus up to a 2% administrative fee. Coverage after job loss is commonly available for up to 18 months. U.S. Department of Labor: COBRA. |
| Spouse or family member’s employer plan | Eligibility, premium, effective date, network, and required enrollment documents. | Request special enrollment within 30 days of losing eligibility for your old coverage. Ask the plan administrator how to enroll. U.S. Department of Labor: Health plan special enrollment. |
| Medicaid or CHIP | Whether household circumstances meet your state’s eligibility rules and when coverage would begin. | Eligibility varies by state; eligible people may enroll at any time. Confirm the decision and effective date before ending other coverage. HealthCare.gov: Medicaid and CHIP. |
If your income or household circumstances change, revisit your options. Report income changes to the Marketplace when applicable so it can recalculate eligibility for savings. Use official state or Marketplace channels to check your own eligibility; it cannot be inferred from the fact of a layoff.

If you have applied widely without progress, ask someone familiar with local hiring and workforce services to help identify the bottleneck. American Job Centers can offer job-search assistance, career counseling, resume and interview support, referrals, placement help, and training referrals. Find a center through the Department of Labor’s American Job Center directory, or call 1-877-US-2JOBS. Services and some eligibility requirements vary by location.

When you make contact, ask for an appointment or workshop and be specific about what would help: resume feedback, interview practice, referrals, career counseling, or information about training. Explain what roles you are pursuing and where the process stops. A counselor can help you assess whether your materials, target roles, interview approach, or local opportunities need a closer look.
- Few or no callbacks: Ask for feedback on your resume and whether the roles you are targeting fit your experience and the openings available locally.
- Interviews but no offers: Ask about interview practice and structured feedback on how you present your experience.
- Few plausible openings: Discuss local labor demand, related roles, and whether your skills could transfer to another kind of job.
These are useful questions for a counselor, not diagnoses that can be made from application counts alone. The U.S. Department of Labor’s job-seeker guidance also points to networking, informational interviews, employer research, job fairs, online job banks, and support groups or job clubs. Use the methods that fit your situation; none guarantees placement.

Ask about layoff-specific and local help
If the layoff is recent or affected a group of workers, ask your state or local Rapid Response or Dislocated Worker Unit whether it is offering a session. These programs may connect affected workers to workshops, benefit information, employment services, retraining, and other resources. The Department of Labor describes Rapid Response as a way to coordinate services and provide aid to companies and affected workers facing layoffs or plant closings. The services available depend on the state, location, and circumstances; ask what applies to you. See the Department of Labor’s layoff assistance information.

Consider training only after checking the fit
A longer search can make retraining sound like the obvious answer, but a course or career change is not right for everyone. Before committing time or money, ask a workforce counselor about local demand, program quality, costs, eligibility, and whether the training fits your financial runway. Workforce agencies can discuss options, but available training and funding vary. Do not assume you need to buy a course to improve your prospects.
Keep the search and household plan manageable
Keep a simple record of applications, contacts, follow-ups, interviews, and feedback you receive. It can help you see where the process is slowing down and what you have already tried; there is no authoritative number of applications that guarantees success. Revisit your budget and coverage choice if income, household needs, or available options change.
If basic needs are becoming urgent, ask an American Job Center about supportive services and contact official state or local benefit offices. What is available depends on location and individual eligibility. Continue to keep retirement-plan documents and administrator contact information together, and check with the plan administrator before making a distribution or rollover decision.
