Re:

Argentina Citizenship by Investment vs. Residency: Costs, Timelines and Rights

Argentina permits naturalization after two years of continuous, legal residence or through a qualifying investment with no minimum residence period. Official sources reviewed do not state a verified investment threshold, total fees or full processing timelines.

Argentina has two relevant routes to naturalization: the ordinary route requires two years of continuous, legal residence immediately before applying, while a separate route lets qualifying investors apply without a minimum residence period. Neither route comes with a verified, all-in price or a guaranteed passport: the investment amount and current total fees are not stated in the official materials reviewed, and the two-year residence rule is an eligibility period—not a total processing estimate.

What “residency” means in this comparison

Here, “residency” means the ordinary residence-based route to Argentine naturalization—not an application for a temporary or permanent residence permit. The naturalization routes are distinct: one is based on meeting the residence condition; the other is based on a qualifying investment. A residence permit may be relevant to a person’s immigration status, but holding one does not by itself establish that the naturalization requirements have been met.

How the two citizenship routes compare

Question Ordinary residence-based naturalization Relevant-investment naturalization
Core eligibility basis Applicant is at least 18 and proves legal, continuous residence in Argentina for the two years immediately before applying (Citizenship Law 346). Applicant proves a relevant investment; the law permits applying regardless of residence duration (Citizenship Law 346).
Presence requirement Continuous residence is defined as remaining in Argentina throughout the period without any trip abroad (Citizenship Law 346). No minimum period of residence is stated in the investment clause (Citizenship Law 346).
Investment threshold No investment condition is stated for this route (Citizenship Law 346). Not stated in the official materials reviewed as of 2026; the Ministry of Economy is responsible for defining relevant investments (Citizenship Law 346; government announcement).
Stated timing Two years is the qualifying residence period before filing. A total application-to-decision or passport timeline is not stated in the reviewed official materials (Citizenship Law 346). Migration has 30 business days to decide after receiving the investment agency’s report. Total end-to-end timing is not stated (Decree 524/2025).
Current total filing costs Not stated in the official materials reviewed as of 2026 (Migration FAQ and official service information). Not stated in the official materials reviewed as of 2026 (Migration FAQ and Decree 524/2025).

The practical trade-off is therefore clearer in time and eligibility terms than in dollars: the ordinary route requires sustained presence, while the investment route removes the statutory residence-duration condition but depends on an investment being accepted under rules set by the Ministry of Economy. The available official information does not support a dollar-for-dollar comparison.

How long must you live in Argentina before applying?

For ordinary naturalization, the law requires an applicant to be over 18 and to have resided legally and continuously in Argentina during the two years immediately before filing. The statute makes “continuous” unusually specific: the applicant must have remained in the country for the whole period without making any trip abroad. Do not treat this as a “mostly resident” test or assume that short trips are harmless.

The two years describe the qualifying period before an application, not the time until citizenship is granted. The official material reviewed does not establish an overall processing estimate for this route.

How much do you have to invest to get Argentine citizenship?

The law allows naturalization based on a “relevant investment” without requiring a stated period of prior residence. It does not set a minimum amount in the provision. Instead, the Ministry of Economy is responsible for defining what counts as relevant and may identify specific projects. An official government announcement confirms that the Ministry sets the criteria, but does not give a threshold.

As of 2026, the official materials reviewed do not state a verified investment minimum, a complete list of qualifying investment types, or a current total of application fees. Treat commercial claims about a fixed amount as unverified unless they can be matched to a current official rule. Do not commit funds on the assumption that a particular project or investment will qualify.

What happens in the investment application?

Decree 524/2025 establishes a review process with more than one decision stage. The investment agency assesses whether the proposed investment meets the Ministry of Economy’s criteria; it does not make citizenship automatic.

  1. Apply to the Agency for Investment Citizenship Programs. The agency receives the application and assesses the investment against the Ministry’s rules.
  2. Undergo the agency’s review. If the investment qualifies for further consideration, the agency requests reports from relevant public bodies, including authorities responsible for security, financial intelligence, criminal records and identity.
  3. Receive a reasoned recommendation. The agency sends its report and recommendation to the National Directorate of Migration. An adverse investment assessment or negative recommendation can lead the agency to propose rejection.
  4. Wait for Migration’s decision. Migration must issue a reasoned approval or rejection within 30 business days after receiving the agency’s report.

That 30-business-day clock begins only when Migration receives the report. It does not include the preceding application review and public-body reporting stages, and it is not an end-to-end citizenship timeline.

How much do Argentine residency and citizenship cost?

A reliable all-in comparison cannot be made from the official figures reviewed. Current aggregate filing costs were not established for either naturalization route, and the investment route also lacks a verified official threshold in the materials reviewed. The relevant official sources include Migration’s residence FAQ and service information, but they do not provide a current total that can be quoted here.

Separate the questions before budgeting: the cost of obtaining or maintaining an immigration status is not the same as naturalization filing costs, and neither figure would establish the amount required for a qualifying investment. Check current government service information for the specific application and status before paying; avoid treating an estimate for one category as a price for another.

What rights do residence and citizenship provide?

“Residence” can mean temporary, permanent or precarious status, and those categories do not have identical legal effects. A person should not assume that every foreign resident has the same access to services or that citizenship is required for every ordinary right.

  • Permission to stay and work: This depends on the person’s immigration category and the terms and validity of that status. A precarious authorization, if granted during an application, may allow the person to stay, enter and exit, work and study while it remains valid.
  • Public health and education: Migration-law changes address access to health services and higher education for people who are not permanent residents. Government material says emergency health care and basic education remain available. These statements do not establish identical access to every service for every residence category.
  • Political and nationality rights: Naturalization changes a person’s status from foreign national to Argentine citizen. The official materials cited here do not provide a complete account of the resulting political rights or of every right attached to each immigration category.

Precarious authorization is not the same as qualifying residence or citizenship. The updated Migration Law says it does not itself create a right to approval and does not count as valid residence for establishing roots for permanent residence or naturalization.

Which route may fit your circumstances?

The residence-based route may fit if

  • You can document legal residence and remain in Argentina throughout the full two-year qualifying period without leaving the country.
  • You do not want to rely on an investment being judged relevant under criteria set by the Ministry of Economy.
  • You can plan around an eligibility period whose total naturalization processing time is not specified in the reviewed official material.

The investment route may fit if

  • You may qualify under the Ministry of Economy’s relevant-investment criteria and can tolerate uncertainty until those criteria and the application process are confirmed for your case.
  • You need a route without a statutory minimum residence period.
  • You understand that agency review and reports precede Migration’s decision, and that the 30-business-day decision period starts only after Migration receives the agency report.

Neither route should be treated as a guaranteed outcome. For a case involving travel during the two-year period, a proposed investment, or a precarious immigration status, confirm the applicable rule and procedure with current official information or a qualified Argentine immigration or nationality lawyer before making an irreversible financial or relocation decision.

What to verify before applying or investing

  • For the ordinary route, confirm how your legal residence is documented and whether your travel history includes any exit during the full two-year qualifying period.
  • For the investment route, obtain the current Ministry of Economy criteria and confirmation that the specific investment qualifies before committing capital.
  • Confirm the live filing channel, required evidence, current fees and any status-specific requirements with Argentina’s Migration authority.
  • Keep eligibility periods, agency review, the decision-stage deadline and any passport issuance steps separate when planning a move or financial commitment; the reviewed sources do not establish complete route timelines.
