IBM kept its mainframes, Power Systems and Storage Systems; separately, Lenovo agreed to resell selected IBM storage and software products. The distinction matters: ownership of a major server portfolio changed, while the named storage products remained IBM’s and became part of a sales alliance.
What Lenovo bought—and what IBM kept
Announced on January 23, 2014, the transaction covered IBM’s x86 server business. The included product lines were System x, BladeCenter and Flex System blade servers and switches, x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXtScale and iDataPlex servers, along with associated software, blade networking and maintenance operations. The companies described the planned purchase price as approximately $2.3 billion in their announcement. Lenovo and IBM’s January 2014 announcement
IBM retained its System z mainframes, Power Systems, Storage Systems, Power-based Flex servers, PureApplication and PureData appliances. So the deal was a transfer of a defined x86 portfolio and related operations, not a sale of IBM’s whole server business or its storage division.
The transaction’s reported price also depends on the point in time and source: Lenovo and IBM announced an approximate $2.3 billion planned price in January; IBM later reported an adjusted purchase price of $2.1 billion in its 2014 annual report, comprising approximately $1.8 billion in cash and the balance in Lenovo common stock. How ownership and the storage alliance differed
| Change | What happened | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Server-business ownership | Lenovo acquired IBM’s x86 server business and the associated product lines and operations described above. | Lenovo took ownership of that x86 portfolio; IBM retained its other named server platforms. |
| Storage and software sales | IBM retained Storage Systems. Under a separate strategic alliance, Lenovo would act as an OEM for IBM and resell selected IBM products. | Lenovo gained a channel to offer certain IBM products; that did not make IBM’s storage business Lenovo-owned. |
The alliance specifically named entry- and midrange Storwize storage systems and Linear Tape Open (LTO) products, as well as selected software including SmartCloud, General Parallel File System and Platform Computing solutions. The January announcement described the alliance alongside the acquisition; Lenovo’s initial-closing announcement also addressed it. What it could mean for the server industry
A larger x86 portfolio under Lenovo
The transfer gave Lenovo a broad enterprise x86 server portfolio and related maintenance and networking operations. Lenovo said it planned to buy the business intact and follow the IBM x86 product roadmap, presenting the deal as a way to expand its enterprise hardware and services business and strengthen its enterprise and cloud strategy. Those were the company’s stated plans at the time, not proof of later product continuity or market-share gains.

Lenovo’s announced market ambition
In September 2014, Lenovo said the acquisition would make it the third-largest player in what it called the “$42.1 billion global x86 server market.” That figure and ranking were Lenovo’s statements in its transaction announcement, not a current market estimate or an independently established post-deal outcome. Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing described the acquisition as adding a “world-class business” and making Lenovo a “strong number three” in the global server market. Lenovo’s September 2014 announcement
The structural change is clear: Lenovo took over IBM’s specified x86 business, while IBM continued to own and sell its retained platforms. The available transaction statements establish the companies’ intentions and the portfolio transfer; they do not establish how market shares, competitors’ positions or industry performance changed over subsequent years.

What it could mean for the storage industry
For storage, the deal meant a potential change in route to market for selected products, not a change in ownership of IBM’s storage division. Lenovo could offer named IBM Storwize and LTO products through the alliance as part of broader enterprise IT solutions, while IBM retained Storage Systems. The deal materials do not demonstrate that this arrangement changed storage market shares or the performance of the products.
