Yes—WordPress can be a good choice for an online store if you value control over your site and have the time or support to manage hosting, updates, and integrations. WooCommerce adds the store functionality to WordPress. If you want a service to handle most of the technical upkeep for you, the ongoing work involved may make WordPress a less suitable fit.
How WordPress eCommerce works
WordPress is website software; WooCommerce is the plugin that adds core store features. The WooCommerce listing describes support for physical and digital products, product variations, downloads, and affiliate items. Subscriptions, bookings, and memberships are also possible through extensions, so those features may involve additional setup and cost.
The plugin listing reports more than 7 million active installations as of October 8, 2026; that live count can change. See the WooCommerce listing on WordPress.org.
Pros of using WordPress and WooCommerce
Control and customization
WooCommerce supports extensions, custom solutions, hooks and filters, and a REST API. That flexibility can help you adapt a store to specific products or workflows. The plugin listing also says store content can be exported to another platform, which can matter if you later decide to move.

Different ways to sell
The range of supported products and extension-based selling models can make WooCommerce suitable for stores that sell more than standard physical goods. Before choosing it, identify which features are built into the setup you plan to use and which require a paid or third-party extension.
Payment options
The WooCommerce listing names WooPayments and more than 100 payment gateways, including Stripe, PayPal, and Square. Gateway availability and supported payment methods can vary by country, so check the current listing and each provider’s terms for your location and needs.

Cons and responsibilities to weigh
You manage the technical stack
WordPress and WooCommerce run on hosting that you choose. Your store’s performance and reliability therefore depend in part on server resources and the fit of your hosting package. Hosting, extensions, development, and maintenance should all be included when you estimate the cost of running the store.
Updates and compatibility take attention
A WordPress store combines core software, a theme, plugins, and sometimes custom code. Changes to one part can affect another, including checkout. WooCommerce’s September 29, 2026 guidance recommends backing up the site and testing PHP changes on staging before making them on a live store. Its suggested checks include checkout, payments, shipping, taxes, orders, scheduled jobs, themes, extensions, and custom code.

More flexibility can mean more operating effort
Extensions and custom development make it possible to tailor a store, but they also add components to configure and keep compatible. For complex or high-volume stores, WooCommerce advises using staging or version control and maintaining good backups. If you do not have the time or expertise to handle this work, budget for qualified technical support.
Can WooCommerce scale as a store grows?
WooCommerce says scaling depends on traffic patterns, the core application, other site code, and server hardware. Its scaling FAQ gives examples of stores with more than 100,000 listed products and thousands of transactions per minute, but says those examples had strong hosting support and a developer team focused on optimization. They are vendor examples, not a performance guarantee for a typical installation.

In a 2026 pre-release post about WooCommerce 11.0, the company reported 9–12% faster variable-product page loads and 6–12% faster bundle-product checkout processing under product object caching. These are vendor-reported figures, not independent test results; the post said caching would be enabled by default for new stores. They should not be treated as a forecast for every site.

As of October 8, 2026, WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. These are WordPress’s current hosting recommendations; check your host’s configuration and your plugins’ compatibility before making changes. WordPress.org requirements.

WooCommerce said on September 29, 2026, that version 11.6 was planned for February 2027 and would require PHP 8.1 or newer. The plan may change. WooCommerce said stores on PHP 7.4 or 8.0 could use planned releases through version 11.5 while preparing to update. It recommends PHP 8.3 or newer for an updated hosting environment.
In WooCommerce’s 2026 account, about 6% of stores that had updated WooCommerce within the previous year were using PHP 7.4 or 8.0 combined. Usage tracking is opt-in, so this is a sample rather than a census. Read WooCommerce’s PHP requirements advisory.
How to decide whether it fits your store
Assess the complete cost and work involved, rather than treating the software itself as the whole decision.
- Customization: Do you need control over the site, content, or store workflows that WooCommerce’s extensions and development options can provide?
- Operating capacity: Who will manage hosting, updates, backups, and compatibility testing?
- Features and payments: Are your required product types, integrations, gateways, and country-specific payment methods supported by the setup you intend to use?
- Scale: What catalog size and traffic do you expect, and can your hosting and technical support grow with them?
- Total cost: Have you accounted for hosting, any necessary extensions, and ongoing maintenance or developer support?
WordPress with WooCommerce is a stronger fit when the control and customization are worth the responsibility of managing the stack. If minimizing technical upkeep is more important than that flexibility, compare options based on who handles infrastructure, updates, and support—as well as their total cost. The sources cited here describe WooCommerce’s capabilities and operating requirements but do not establish a neutral, current ranking against other store platforms.
