Tesla does not publish a current consumer price for replacing a Model 3 high-voltage battery pack, as of October 8, 2026. The only full invoice that has been reported publicly dates from 2020, and it should not be used as a budget number. The amount you would pay depends mainly on three things: whether the car is still covered by Tesla’s battery warranty, what a qualified technician finds during diagnosis, and whether the repair is a full pack or something smaller. Warranty status is the first thing to check, because it can change the cost from a bill you pay to a repair you do not.
The only reported price is a 2020 invoice
EV Model Compare, in an article updated September 23, 2026, described one Tesla Service invoice from 2020. It listed a remanufactured Model 3 pack and labor as follows:

The two lines add up to $15,799.27 on that one invoice. That total is a historical data point from 2020, not a present-day price, an average, or a range. Parts and labor prices have changed since then, and the invoice cannot tell you what a repair of your car would cost in your city today. Keep the source and year attached any time you quote it, as in “one 2020 Tesla Service invoice reported by EV Model Compare.”

Check warranty status before anything else
Tesla’s North American Model 3 New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers battery malfunction or defect for a set period of time and mileage, and the period depends on which battery the car has. Whichever limit is reached first ends the coverage.

A warranty repair does not have to mean a new pack
Tesla keeps discretion over how a covered battery is fixed. The warranty states that Tesla “will repair the unit, or replace it with a new, reconditioned or remanufactured part at the sole discretion of Tesla.” For a replacement, the warranty says the new battery’s energy capacity will be at least equal to the original battery’s capacity before failure, considering age and mileage. That means a covered owner may receive a reconditioned or remanufactured pack, not a new one, and the reader should not assume either outcome before the diagnosis.
Range loss alone is not proof of a failed battery
Tesla notes that displayed range estimates are an imperfect measure of battery capacity. A drop in range can come from weather, driving habits, tire changes, or software behavior, so it is not enough to justify a claim or a repair. Capacity warranty measurement is governed by the booklet, and a diagnosis is the step that determines whether the battery is actually outside the warranty’s terms.

Extended service coverage may apply
Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty support page describes a possible Model 3 and Model Y High Voltage Battery and Drive Unit Extended Service Agreement for eligible owners. Why the labor side is specialized
High-voltage battery work is not a general mechanical job. Tesla’s published service procedure for removing and replacing the high-voltage battery on 2017–2023 Model 3 AWD vehicles lists a correction code, 16010202, with a flat-rate time of 5.40 hours. Flat-rate time is a labor standard for the procedure. It is not an hourly rate, and it is not a retail labor charge at any shop. This is why a quote from a shop with no high-voltage credentials is a warning sign, regardless of the price. A low estimate that skips diagnosis, or that does not state the pack condition, is not a fair comparison.

Tesla Service or an independent shop
Warranty work must be done at a Tesla Service Center. For repairs outside warranty, Tesla states on its support page: “For any non-warranty repair or maintenance, you may use a Tesla Service Center or visit your preferred non-Tesla vehicle service center.” Tesla also cautions that it is not responsible for issues caused by improper third-party work, so the qualifications and workmanship of any outside shop matter.
An independent shop is a reasonable option for a non-warranty repair only if it can show high-voltage training for Model 3 vehicles, can state the parts it intends to use, and will put the warranty on its work in writing.
How to get a comparable quote
- Start with a diagnosis for your exact vehicle. Ask for the findings in writing, including the diagnostic steps used and the fault codes or measurements that support the recommendation.
- Confirm the warranty position with Tesla before you authorize work. Ask whether the battery is covered under the North American warranty, whether the mileage and age limits still apply, and whether an extended service agreement is in place.
- Request quotes from Tesla Service and any independent shop using the same scope of work. Share the VIN, trim, model year, and the diagnostic result with each one.
- Compare the quotes line by line using the checklist below before deciding.
Compare these items on each quote:
- The diagnostic findings the quote is based on, and whether the quote is for a full pack or a smaller repair.
- The condition of the replacement part: new, reconditioned, remanufactured, or used.
- Confirmation that the part is compatible with the vehicle’s exact trim and model year.
- Labor, programming, and any added work such as coolant, seals, or related components.
- Taxes, fees, and towing.
- The parts warranty and the labor warranty, in writing, with the term stated.
- Turnaround time and any loaner or rental arrangement.
- The technician’s high-voltage qualifications and certifications.
Planning the money without a current price
Because there is no current published price, plan around the decision rather than a single number. Confirm warranty status first. If the car is covered, the main expense is the diagnosis and any out-of-pocket items the warranty excludes. If the car is outside the warranty, you will be comparing written quotes from qualified shops and weighing the repair cost against the car’s current value and what you would spend on a replacement vehicle.
For a household budget, it is better to hold cash for the uncertainty than to pick a number from a 2020 invoice. Once you have a written quote for your car, you can decide whether to repair, sell, or keep driving with the battery as it is.
