EA’s acquisition by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners closed on August 4, 2026. EA is now privately held, but the closing announcement did not name any game slated for cancellation or announce changes to a title’s content, monetization, or creative direction. The owners have described broad plans to invest in growth and innovation, including AI; what those plans will mean for individual games remains unknown.
What changed—and what $55 billion means
EA announced the all-cash acquisition agreement on September 29, 2025, and completed the transaction on August 4, 2026. The buyers are PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. EA reported that its stockholders would receive $210 per share held at closing. EA common stock ceased trading and is to be delisted from NASDAQ, ending its status as a publicly traded company. EA’s closing announcement confirms the post-close status.
The announced approximately $55 billion figure was the transaction’s enterprise value—not $55 billion in cash paid to shareholders. In its 2025 agreement announcement, EA separately described $210 per share in cash consideration, approximately $36 billion in equity funding, and $20 billion in debt financing committed by JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. Of that debt, $18 billion was expected to be funded at close. PIF was to roll over its existing 9.9% stake.
These figures describe the deal’s terms and financing, not how much EA will spend on a particular game. The cited announcements do not say how debt service will affect any title’s budget, release schedule, or business model.

What EA’s new owners say they want to do
EA chairman and CEO Andrew Wilson said at closing that the company and its partners would “invest boldly, accelerate innovation, and build the next generation of games and experiences.” Silver Lake CEO and managing partner Egon Durban described investment in EA’s growth, including “what AI can do to enhance game development and player experience.” These are statements of intent by the company and investors. They do not specify budgets, products, release plans, or completed changes.
EA’s scale helps explain why the ownership change matters to players. The company reported approximately $7.5 billion in GAAP net revenue for fiscal year 2026 and listed franchises including EA SPORTS FC, Battlefield, Apex Legends, The Sims, Madden NFL, College Football, Need for Speed, Dragon Age, Titanfall, Plants vs. Zombies, and EA SPORTS F1. The portfolio list and revenue figure come from EA’s August 4, 2026 announcement; they do not indicate which games will receive more or less investment.

Will EA change or cancel any games?
EA’s closing announcement names franchises but does not announce a cancellation, delay, monetization change, content change, or creative intervention in any specific game. On the evidence available in that announcement, there is no confirmed game-specific change to report. Broad promises of growth, innovation, or AI use are not evidence that a particular game will change.
The acquisition agreement’s financing is relevant context for EA’s new ownership, but it does not establish how the company will allocate resources or make product decisions. Any claim that a named game will be altered because of the deal needs separate, game-specific evidence.

Why the deal raised questions about independence
Before the acquisition closed, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren wrote to Wilson on October 14, 2025, expressing concern that EA might stop exercising editorial and operational independence under PIF majority ownership. Their letter also asked about customer information, AI development, and product direction. Those were congressional concerns and requests for information; the letter does not establish that censorship, surveillance, or other influence occurred. The Senate committee’s letter predates the closing.
EA’s original transaction announcement also cautioned that statements about the deal’s benefits and timing relied on assumptions and were not guarantees of future performance. It identified risks including management disruption, unexpected costs, litigation, and possible effects on employee retention and business relationships. Those cautions describe transaction risks, not proof that any have materialized.

What players can reasonably conclude
- Confirmed: The acquisition is complete, EA is privately held, and the buyers are PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners.
- Stated intention: EA and its owners say they want to invest in growth and innovation, including AI.
- Not established by the cited announcements: Whether any named game will be canceled, delayed, changed in content or monetization, or subject to outside creative control.
For now, the deal changes who owns EA and sets out broad strategic ambitions. Its consequences for individual games will become clear only if EA or other reliable evidence documents specific changes.
