These are reported results and updated company expectations—not proof that every production or certification challenge is resolved.
Did Boeing meet its 2025 production and delivery goals?
Only in part. Boeing delivered more aircraft and increased 737 production during the year, but its planned recovery remained conditional and the 777-9 timeline slipped. The year-end figures come from Boeing’s disclosures; they should be read as company-reported results rather than independently validated performance measures.
| Area | What Boeing said at the start of 2025 | What Boeing reported by year-end |
|---|---|---|
| 737 production | Production had resumed, with gradual rate increases planned. Boeing’s January 2025 fourth-quarter release did not state a year-end rate target in the cited information. | Production rose from below 38 aircraft per month at the beginning of 2025 to 42 per month in the fourth quarter. Boeing’s next stated target was 47 per month in 2026, subject to readiness and FAA concurrence. |
| 787 production | The program had exited 2024 at five aircraft per month. | A 2025 year-end 787 rate is not stated in the cited Boeing disclosures. |
| Commercial deliveries | The January release did not establish a full-year 2025 delivery result. | Boeing reported 600 commercial deliveries in 2025, its highest annual total since 2018. |
| 777-9 first delivery | Boeing anticipated first delivery in 2026. | During 2025, Boeing moved the expected first delivery to 2027 after reassessing the certification flight-test timeline. |
For its January outlook, see Boeing’s January 2025 fourth-quarter results. The year-end delivery and order figures are in Boeing’s 2025 annual report; production and program details are in its 2026 Form 10-K.
What changed in Boeing’s production plans?
The 737 rate increased, with further growth conditional
Boeing reported that the 737 rate recovered from below 38 aircraft per month at the beginning of the year to 42 per month in the fourth quarter of 2025. In October, Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration agreed that the program’s indicators and rate-readiness process supported the increase.
#1 Best Overall
Boeing’s next stated plan was to seek a rate of 47 per month in 2026. That was not an unconditional commitment: it depended on operational readiness and FAA concurrence. FAA agreement on a production-rate process is distinct from Boeing’s responsibility to execute its manufacturing and quality plans.
The 787 starting point is known; a year-end rate is not
Boeing said in January 2025 that the 787 had exited 2024 at five aircraft per month. The cited year-end disclosures do not establish a different 2025 787 rate, so the five-per-month figure should not be treated as a confirmed year-end result.

How many aircraft did Boeing deliver, and what do orders mean?
Boeing reported 600 commercial deliveries in 2025, its highest annual total since 2018. It also reported more than 1,100 commercial orders and a company backlog of $682 billion.
Those measures describe different things. Deliveries are aircraft handed over during the year; orders are commitments recorded, not completed deliveries; backlog is the value of orders remaining to be fulfilled under Boeing’s accounting and reporting. A large order total or backlog does not by itself establish when aircraft will be produced, delivered, or recognized as revenue.

Why did the 777-9 schedule move to 2027?
Boeing said it reassessed the 777-9 certification flight-test timeline in the third quarter of 2025 and delayed the expected first delivery from 2026 to 2027. Certification timing depends on the work needed to demonstrate compliance and on regulatory review; Boeing controls its own engineering, production, and readiness execution, but it cannot unilaterally set certification outcomes or timing.
The schedule shift came with a substantial financial charge. Boeing recorded an incremental $4.899 billion reach-forward loss on the 777X program in 2025. The company attributed the loss primarily to production challenges, certification and delivery delays, and higher estimated labor and supplier costs. A reach-forward loss is a program cost exposure Boeing recognized in its financial reporting; it is not the same as a cash payment made solely in 2025.

What Boeing’s own assessment says about the recovery
In his 2025 annual-report shareholder letter, Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg wrote: “While I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, we have not turned the corner just yet, and there’s more work ahead of us.” That is management’s characterization of progress, not an independent assessment. It is consistent with a year in which deliveries and the 737 rate improved while the 777-9 schedule and program cost outlook worsened.
