Rogers announced a five-year, $50 million commitment on January 8, 2026, for Screen Break, a national program intended to help Canadian families and young people build a more balanced relationship with screens. The initiative combines parental app tools, youth activities, research and public education; Rogers has not published a breakdown of how the money will be allocated.
What is Rogers Screen Break?
Screen Break is a Rogers-funded national initiative focused on youth screen use. Rogers describes four pillars: parental tools, youth programming, research and partnerships, and education and advocacy. The company’s first-quarter 2026 management discussion and analysis also records the initiative as a launched five-year, $50 million program. Rogers’ January 8 launch announcement sets out the activities it plans to support.
The announcement does not specify how the $50 million will be divided among the four pillars, across the five years, or among partners and recipients. Rogers’ first-quarter 2026 MD&A confirms the program’s launch, but does not provide a public spending breakdown.
What will the program do?
Give parents tools and resources
Rogers says MyRogers can help parents manage family members’ mobile data use. Rogers Xfinity app features include time limits, downtime schedules and monitoring time spent on popular apps. The company also announced a Screen Break website with family resources and conversation tips. These are tools and resources for managing use; the launch announcement does not say they will automatically limit every device or app.

Fund research and school partnerships
Rogers says it will commission an annual study and partner with the Dais at Toronto Metropolitan University to engage tweens and teens in developing healthy digital habits in schools. The announcement identifies the partnership and its purpose, but does not set out a published evaluation framework for measuring changes in screen use or health.

Promote education and advocacy
Rogers said it would work with athletes and on-air talent on social media and advertising. Its launch release named George Springer, Connor McDavid, John Tavares, Marie-Philip Poulin and Sarah Nurse. These are public-awareness efforts, distinct from the app controls or in-person youth programming.
What does the 5.2-hour phone-use figure mean?
Rogers said its commissioned Angus Reid Forum survey found that smartphone-owning youth aged 11–17 spent an average of 5.2 hours per day on their phones. The survey was conducted in English and French from October 30 to November 11, 2025, and included 1,213 parents of smartphone-owning 11–17-year-olds and 503 smartphone-owning youth in that age range. This is a finding reported from Rogers’ commissioned survey, not a government statistic or an independently established national time-use measurement. Rogers’ Screen Break page repeats selected figures from the commissioned research.

In the same survey, nine in ten surveyed parents said youth spent too much time on their phones, while one in three surveyed youth thought their screen time was a problem. Those are respondents’ views, not clinical assessments. Rogers’ launch release also attributes a two-hour recreational screen-time limit to the Canadian Paediatric Society; the release does not provide the qualifying details behind that figure, so it should be understood as Rogers’ attribution rather than a fully specified recommendation here.
