The proposed takeover of Sheffield United by US-based COH Sports moved closer to completion when the English Football League cleared the consortium in December 2024. The sale was completed on 23 December 2024, with consortium leaders Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy joining the club’s board as co-chairmen.
Who was buying Sheffield United?
COH Sports, a US-based consortium led by business partners Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, bought the club from its outgoing owner, Prince Abdullah. Sheffield United described COH Sports as “a group of successful entrepreneurs, business partners and friends, established to invest in sporting opportunities.”
What moved the proposed takeover closer to completion?
On 7 December 2024, BBC Sport reported that the EFL had cleared the proposed takeover, citing a statement from the consortium. That was a significant step, but clearance was not the same as a completed sale: at that point, the transaction was still moving toward completion. When did the takeover complete, and what changed?
Sheffield United announced on 23 December 2024 that the club was under new ownership. BBC Sport also reported that COH Sports had completed the acquisition. Rosen and Eltoukhy were to join the board as co-chairmen, and the club’s announcement said the new owners would support the existing management team. What was reported about a later debt dispute?
In December 2025, Sky Sports reported that Prince Abdullah had threatened the new owners with liquidation over an alleged £10 million debt and a statutory demand. This is a later dispute, separate from the completed 2024 takeover. The reporting describes a claim; the available evidence here does not establish that the debt was judicially proven or how the dispute was resolved.
