What Is SASSA? How to Apply for a Grant and Check Your SASSA Status (2026 Guide)

SASSA, the South African Social Security Agency, is the government body that administers South Africa’s social grants. You start a grant application and find grant information through its official services portal. If you are checking a Social Relief of Distress (SRD) application, the status labels are explained in SASSA’s official SRD status guide. Eligibility depends on the specific grant, so begin with the official page for that grant rather than a general checklist.

What SASSA is

The South African Social Security Agency is the government agency responsible for administering social grants. Its official Grant Information page lists the grant categories and their requirements, and its online services portal provides information and links to grant services. Both are the first places to check, because they are the only channels that SASSA itself presents as the authoritative source for applications and status information.

SASSA’s homepage says it provides support to “more than 18 million people” who receive various grants. That figure appears on a live page without a publication date, so treat it as SASSA’s own approximate statement rather than a dated statistic that can be checked against a specific year.

Which grants exist and what decides eligibility

SASSA’s current Grant Information page describes requirements for six categories:

  • Older persons grant
  • Child support grant
  • Foster child grant
  • Disability grant
  • Care dependency grant
  • Grant-in-aid

The requirements are not interchangeable. Depending on the grant, the page sets out some combination of the following tests:

  • South African residence, or citizenship, residency or refugee status
  • Age
  • The applicant’s relationship to the child or person in care
  • A means test (an income and asset assessment)
  • A medical assessment
  • Whether the person is maintained in a state institution

Because of this, a reader who qualifies for one grant may not qualify for another. Read the page for the exact grant before collecting documents.

This article does not state current grant amounts or SRD income thresholds. Those figures change, and the older SRD status guide still uses wording from the original R350 grant period. Confirm current amounts and rules on the live official pages before you budget around a payment.

How to apply for a SASSA grant

  1. Open the SASSA Services Portal at services.sassa.gov.za/portal/r/sassa/sassa/home. Register for a personal profile if you plan to use online services, then select grant information or the service link for the grant you need.
  2. Check the requirements for that grant on the SASSA Grant Information page. Note the residency, age, means-test and medical or caregiver documents it lists for your situation, and gather them before you start.
  3. Complete the application through the service link for your grant, using the details you have gathered. Keep copies of everything you submit and any reference number the portal gives you.
  4. If the online service is unavailable, use the contact details on SASSA’s official contact page or visit your nearest SASSA office. When this guide was checked in October 2026, the portal’s how-to page displayed an unavailable or maintenance message, so confirm that the online workflow is live before you rely on it.

How to check an SRD application status

SRD status is checked on the official SRD SASSA website. SASSA’s official SRD status guide explains what each status label means and what to do next. The table below uses the labels and next steps from that guide.

Status label What it means Next step given in the guide
Application complete The application or reapplication has been received. Check each month for verification and payment status.
Bank details pending Banking details still need to be submitted. Submit banking details through the official website.
Reapplication pending A reapplication is required before the status can move forward. Submit an application through the official website.
Period pending Verification for that payment period has not been completed. Check again later in the month.
Period approved The application has been approved for that period. Check the pay-day field. If no pay day appears, the guide says payment has not yet been processed.
Period declined The application was not approved for that period, and the reason is shown. If you dispute the reason, use the official reconsideration route described in the guide.
Canceled The grant has been canceled. Use the official reinstatement route described in the guide.

The status labels come from an older PDF that is titled for the R350 SRD grant. The vocabulary is the best official guide to what each label means, but the links, programme terms, amounts and processing timing in that document may no longer match the current cycle. Before you act on a timing expectation, such as when a period will be verified or paid, check the live SRD service.

Help, appeals and fraud

Contacting SASSA

SASSA’s contact page lists 0800 60 10 11 for grant information, application help, payment dates, district-office contacts and fraud reporting. SASSA says the toll-free number applies to calls from landlines only, and calls from cellphones may incur costs.

Appealing a refused application

An older official grants booklet from the 2021–22 period says that applicants whose applications are refused should be told why and informed of their right to appeal. That booklet does not give a universal appeal deadline. Confirm the current route and time limit for your specific grant and decision on the official pages or through SASSA’s contact channels before the deadline could pass.

Suspected fraud and paid helpers

To report suspected fraud or corruption involving social grants, use the fraud-reporting details on SASSA’s official contact page. Applying for a SASSA grant does not require payment. Be cautious of anyone offering a paid “application helper” service, and do not pay anyone to submit an application on your behalf.
