How antimony’s form shapes its uses
Antimony is a metalloid, but industrial applications do not all use the same form of it. Metallic antimony can be alloyed with other metals; antimony trioxide, a compound, is used in formulations and materials. The intended function and end product determine which form is relevant.

Metal products, batteries, and ammunition
Antimony can be alloyed with lead to improve material properties. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) describes antimony use in lead-acid storage batteries and other alloys. Its Professional Paper 1802-C gives battery terminals made from lead-antimony alloy as one example. Battery formulations differ, so this does not mean every modern lead-acid battery uses the same alloy or amount.
USGS also groups antimonial lead and ammunition among metal end uses. That classification describes U.S. use categories; it should not be read as a global ranking of antimony applications.

Antimony trioxide in flame-retardant formulations
USGS identifies antimony trioxide as the most important antimony compound and says it is used primarily in flame-retardant formulations. The compound is an ingredient in materials and products, not a finished fireproofing product acting alone. Examples named by USGS include safety equipment, household goods such as mattresses, fabrics, and seat covers.
In a 2017 broad framing of antimony’s uses, the authors of USGS Professional Paper 1802-C wrote: “Antimony’s leading use is as a fire retardant in safety equipment and in household goods, such as mattresses.” That description is useful context, but it is not a current global market-share estimate.

Glass, ceramics, rubber, and plastics
USGS groups ceramics, glass, and rubber products in a nonmetal-use category. Its professional material also describes applications in plastics and heat stabilizers. These are not one interchangeable use: the compound, formulation, and function vary with the product.

The USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 estimates the distribution of U.S. antimony use in 2025 as follows. The percentages describe U.S. use, not global demand.

The categories reflect how the USGS summary groups uses; in particular, its metal-products category includes flame retardants. They are not a breakdown of the amount of each chemical form used in every product.

For 2025, USGS estimated U.S. apparent consumption at 45,000 metric tons, net import reliance at 91% of apparent consumption, and recycling’s contribution at 12% of apparent consumption. These are U.S. estimates, not global supply figures.

The 2026 summary says one U.S. company began mining antimony in Montana in 2025. It also reports primary metal and oxide production by one Montana company using imported feedstock. Secondary production came from antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries and was intended for the lead-acid battery industry. These details show that domestic processing, recycling, and imports all contribute to the U.S. supply picture.

Keep production statistics separate from use statistics
A USGS report published in 2021 estimates that China accounted for approximately 61% of world antimony production in 2018, Russia 20%, and Tajikistan 10%. Those figures concern global production in 2018, not current production and not where antimony is used. They should not be compared directly with the 2025 U.S. end-use percentages.
