Antimony is used in lead-acid batteries, but it is not a general substitute for lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, or other materials used in different battery chemistries. The useful comparison is about which battery type uses each material, how its supply is tied to that use, and what the available evidence can—and cannot—say about market share and recycling.
What is antimony used for in batteries?
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identifies lead-acid batteries as one use for antimony. In this battery type, antimony is associated with lead alloys used in battery components; it is not the battery’s sole active material. That connection also matters after a battery is spent: USGS describes antimonial lead recovered from used lead-acid batteries as a source of secondary antimony.

Battery materials are specific to their chemistry and role. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) lists antimony alongside lead, lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and vanadium as materials associated with batteries and energy technologies. That broad list does not mean those elements perform the same job or can be swapped into the same cell.
How does antimony compare with lithium, cobalt, or graphite?
There is no meaningful one-for-one comparison without naming the chemistry. Antimony’s documented battery connection here is lead-acid; lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, and manganese are associated with other battery applications, including lithium-ion. They are not interchangeable ingredients. The evidence cited here does not establish antimony as a standard lithium-ion active material.

The shares are Global Market Insights figures for 2022, as cited in DOE’s 2023 Critical Materials Assessment. They describe a dated estimate of stationary-storage deployments, not current market shares, all battery sales, or the proportion of a battery’s material content.
Why is antimony considered a critical mineral?
Critical-mineral status is a supply-risk designation, not a ranking of battery importance. DOE defines a critical material as one with a high risk of supply-chain disruption that serves an essential function in one or more energy technologies. USGS’s 2025 methodology assesses potential effects of foreign-trade disruption and economic exposure; it is not, by itself, evidence of a current shortage, price level, or antimony’s prominence across battery chemistries.

The 2025 USGS List contains 60 critical minerals: all 50 minerals on the 2022 list plus 10 additions. USGS says its methodology considered more than 1,200 trade-disruption scenarios and analyzed more than 400 industries. Antimony’s presence on the list signals assessed supply-chain importance, not that it is a leading material in every battery market.
How much antimony is recycled?
USGS historical supply data report that recycling supplied about 18% of estimated U.S. antimony consumption in 2020. Most of the remainder came from imports. The agency describes secondary U.S. antimony as coming mostly from antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries. These figures are a 2020 snapshot, not a current recycling rate or import share.

What trade-offs can the evidence support?
For a practical comparison, keep chemistry, application, material role, supply exposure, recycling route, and deployment scale separate. Antimony is tied here to lead-acid batteries and a recycling pathway through recovered antimonial lead. DOE’s older stationary-storage estimate shows lithium-ion had a much larger share than lead-acid in 2022, but that does not measure material supply risk or establish which chemistry is preferable for a particular project.
The cited sources do not support a quantitative head-to-head ranking of antimony-related and lithium-ion batteries for cost, energy density, safety, environmental impact, or cycle life. Those outcomes depend on the specific battery design and application; the material-use and market-share evidence above is not a substitute for performance data.
