A company can be both, so compare what each business sells, what its price assumes, how it spends and earns, and how much of your portfolio depends on it—not just the label.
First define what counts as AI and non-AI growth
“AI stock” can mean a company that sells AI products or services, supplies hardware or infrastructure used for AI, or uses AI in its own operations. Those are different kinds of exposure, with different routes to revenue and different risks. An SEC-filed AI-themed fund prospectus cautions that it can be difficult to capture accurately what qualifies as an AI company.

“Growth stock” is also a broad label. It generally refers to a company investors expect to expand, but it does not by itself identify an industry or business model. A company can therefore be an AI supplier and a growth stock, or a growth company whose connection to AI is limited to using the technology internally.
Before comparing two stocks, funds, or groups, write down the rules you will use to classify them. If you mean AI revenue, specify whether infrastructure suppliers count. If you mean “non-AI,” decide how to treat companies that use AI but do not sell it. For a fund comparison, use the fund’s own stated definition and holdings rather than assuming that its label captures every company consistently.

Compare the businesses, not just the theme
A compelling technology story is not the same as evidence of durable, profitable demand. For each company, examine whether customers are adopting and paying for its products, whether revenue is recurring, and whether profits or cash generation support the growth case. Product announcements, research activity, and infrastructure spending may show that a company is investing; they do not, on their own, show that customers will generate an adequate return on that investment.
AI-related businesses can face high research and capital expenditures, variable profitability, intense competition, rapid obsolescence, dependence on intellectual property, and changes in regulation or political conditions. These are risks identified in an SEC-filed AI-themed fund prospectus—not proof that every AI company will experience them or fail. Apply the same business-level scrutiny to non-AI growth companies: projected expansion still needs to become durable revenue, profit, or cash flow.

Ask what the stock price already expects
A company can grow quickly and still disappoint investors if its results fall short of what its share price implies. An SEC-filed disclosure warns that AI-company share prices may reflect expectations that do not materialize and may react to shifts in investor sentiment. That makes valuation a comparison of price against assumptions, not a simple judgment based on whether a company is associated with AI.

For each investment, identify the earnings, revenue, or cash-flow assumptions that would need to hold for its current price to make sense. Then ask what could cause those assumptions to be missed: slower adoption, weaker pricing, higher costs, competitive pressure, or a change in market sentiment. Compare AI and non-AI growth stocks using the same valuation measure and the same date. The available evidence here does not establish a consistent current basket of AI and non-AI growth stocks or comparable basket-level valuation and earnings-growth figures, so it cannot support a numerical ranking of the groups.

Separate investment spending from investment returns
AI can require substantial spending on research, computing, data centers, and other infrastructure. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 report says it will continue capital expenditures to support cloud growth and AI training and other infrastructure. That is evidence of an ongoing investment requirement at one issuer; it does not establish that the spending will earn an adequate return.
When evaluating a company, look for evidence that spending is supporting paid demand and durable cash generation. Consider the cost of building and operating the infrastructure, how much capacity must be used to justify it, and whether the company can maintain attractive economics as competitors invest. Apply equivalent questions to non-AI growth businesses: expansion is valuable to shareholders only if the business can fund it and produce worthwhile returns.

Check competition, regulation, and durability
For a company with AI exposure, consider how quickly its products could become obsolete, whether rivals could take customers or reduce pricing, how dependent its products are on intellectual-property rights, and how regulation or political changes could affect its economics. A fund prospectus identifies these as risks for AI-related companies. They are possibilities to assess, not predictions that any particular outcome will occur.

For non-AI growth stocks, identify the equivalent threats to the company’s products, margins, and market position. The useful comparison is not “new technology versus old economy”; it is whether each business has a credible path to sustaining growth despite competition and changing conditions.

Look through indexes and funds for concentration
A broad fund or index can still leave an investor heavily exposed to a small group of companies. One fund disclosure notes that a handful of mega-cap information-technology stocks has become a significant part of some market-cap-weighted indexes. As a result, a fund described as broad-market or growth-oriented may overlap substantially with an AI-focused fund—or concentrate exposure in a few large firms—depending on its holdings and weighting method.
Check the current holdings and weights of the funds you are comparing. Look at overlap between them, the share represented by the largest positions, and how much exposure comes from a single sector or supplier group. Do not infer diversification from a fund’s name or the number of securities it owns.
Use a like-for-like comparison
Keep the comparison method consistent. Decide how you classify AI exposure, set a date for holdings and financial data, and compare companies or funds on the same accounting and geographic basis. For a group-level comparison, state how the baskets are constructed and how mixed-exposure companies are handled; otherwise, the result can change simply because the membership rules changed.

- Define the baskets. State whether AI exposure means AI revenue, AI infrastructure supply, AI use in operations, or a fund’s own classification. Explain what “non-AI” excludes and how companies in both groups are treated.
- Compare operating evidence. Examine revenue quality, profitability, cash generation, and the durability of demand, rather than treating investment announcements as proof of successful adoption.
- Assess price against expectations. Use the same date and valuation approach, and identify the business outcomes required to support each price.
- Test the spending case. Consider how much research and infrastructure investment is needed and what evidence would show that it is producing durable returns.
- Review risks and portfolio exposure. Consider competition, obsolescence, intellectual property, regulation, sentiment, fund holdings, and concentration in large firms or sectors.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Growth investing carries the risk that a stock will not appreciate as investors expect, and both AI and non-AI growth stocks are equities whose prices can fluctuate. Neither label guarantees returns, and neither makes a stock suitable on its own. The useful outcome of comparing them is a clearer view of the business assumptions, valuation, risks, and concentration behind an investment—not a blanket verdict that one category is better.
