A payment link is a shareable URL that opens a payment provider’s hosted checkout page. A seller sets up what is being sold, shares the link, and the buyer reviews the offer and pays on that page. It can be a practical way to take payment without building a website checkout, but it is not the same as an invoice addressed to a particular customer.
What a payment link does
A payment link is an entry point to checkout, not simply a request to transfer money to an individual. The customer follows the URL to a hosted page showing the seller’s offer and payment options. Some providers also create a QR code that opens the same checkout.
For example, PayPal describes a hosted payment page where customers can review a product or service and complete payment, while Stripe describes its links as shareable URLs that open a checkout session. The exact checkout features depend on the provider and how the seller configured the link.
How payment links work
- Set up the offer. The seller uses a payment provider’s business dashboard or API to create a link. The setup may include an item or service, price, and supported options.
- Configure checkout details. Depending on the provider and integration, settings may include variants, shipping, taxes, discounts, recurring billing, or where a customer goes after payment. PayPal documents examples in its payment-link use cases.
- Share the URL or QR code. The seller can send a link by email, text, or social media, put it on a website, or share a QR code in person. PayPal outlines these options in its sharing guide.
- The buyer pays through hosted checkout. The customer opens the provider’s page, checks the offer, and completes payment. The seller can review transaction activity or receive notifications according to the provider and setup.
Dashboard creation suits sellers who want to configure a link without coding. An API can be used to create and manage payment resources programmatically; PayPal documents both approaches in its setup guide and API documentation.

When a payment link makes sense
Use a link when a sale starts outside a conventional online store and you need a straightforward route to hosted checkout. It can fit a small business taking payment after a message, social post, email, appointment, or face-to-face conversation. Provider examples include selling goods or services, accepting donations or tips, collecting subscription payments, and displaying a QR code at an event. Options differ by provider; see PayPal’s overview and Stripe’s product page.
A link may be less suitable when checkout must be tightly integrated with a cart, complex inventory rules, or a custom buying experience. In those cases, compare the provider’s broader commerce and checkout tools rather than assuming a hosted link can handle every requirement.

Payment link or invoice?
Choose based on whether the payment request is meant for a broad audience or a particular customer. PayPal describes its payment links as reusable and usable by anyone who has the link, while its invoices are used to request one-time or recurring payment from a specific customer. That distinction describes PayPal’s products; other providers may organize these tools differently.
What to compare before choosing a provider
First establish the seller’s country and the locations of likely buyers. Availability, currencies, payment methods, eligibility, fees, and operating terms vary by provider and market and can change. PayPal’s overview, updated August 19, 2026, states that its payments are available in more than 200 countries and regions and support more than 23 currencies. These are PayPal-specific figures, not a guarantee that every method or currency works in every listed location; check the provider’s current local terms.

- Workflow: Does the business need a reusable checkout link or a customer-specific bill?
- Setup: Can staff create links in a dashboard, or does the business need API-based creation and management?
- Checkout features: Check for the specific needs—such as fixed prices, variants, recurring payments, donations, tips, shipping, taxes, discounts, and return behavior—rather than assuming they are all supported.
- Costs and operations: Review current market-specific pricing, dispute and refund terms, payout timing, and eligibility. PayPal’s linked US product page says displayed fees may change; a US fee page should not be treated as a universal rate.
- Trust and presentation: Inspect the hosted checkout’s domain, displayed offer, confirmation flow, and customer-support details so they match the business and its sale.
Security checks for buyers and sellers
A hosted checkout means payment details are entered on the provider’s page, but that does not make every link or seller trustworthy. Before paying, confirm that the domain belongs to the named provider, the seller and offer are expected, and the amount and currency are correct. If anything looks unfamiliar, verify the request with the seller through a trusted contact method before proceeding.
Sellers should open and verify a link before sharing it, including checking the displayed price and checkout behavior. PayPal’s setup guidance recommends verifying the link and completing a test payment. A test confirms the configured flow; it is not a guarantee that every later transaction will work or that every transaction is protected.
