To minimize the cost of exchanging Swiss francs (CHF), compare the full amount you will pay—not just the advertised rate or a single transaction fee. Include the exchange-rate markup, card or counter fees, cash-withdrawal charges, and any surcharge from a foreign ATM. When a card terminal or ATM offers to convert a charge into francs, choose the local currency and decline the conversion to CHF.

How to compare the real cost

For each option, compare how much destination currency you receive or how much CHF your purchase ultimately costs. Account for every applicable charge:

  • Exchange-rate markup: the difference between the provider’s conversion rate and the reference or interbank rate it uses.
  • Separate transaction fee: a foreign transaction or currency-conversion charge from your card issuer, bank, or exchange counter.
  • Cash costs: a withdrawal fee from your card provider, a counter or delivery charge, and any fee disclosed by the ATM operator.
  • Practicality: whether you need cash immediately, how much you need, and whether the currency is available before departure.

A low stated fee does not guarantee a low total cost if the provider uses a less favorable rate. Compare the terms for your specific currency, amount, and card or account before exchanging.

Choose an exchange route that fits your cash needs

Buy foreign banknotes in Switzerland

Buying cash before departure can be convenient if you need notes as soon as you arrive. Compare the bank’s banknote sell rate and any handling or delivery charge with the likely cost of paying by card or withdrawing cash abroad. Some less common currencies may not be held at a branch and may need to be ordered several days in advance; check availability and lead time before relying on this option. Moneyland.ch’s guide to exchanging currencies in Switzerland describes this availability issue.

Exchange cash at your destination

A bank or exchange bureau can be useful when you need cash and cannot use an ATM or card. Counter services can carry high fees, so focus on the final amount of local currency offered after all charges rather than the posted rate alone. There is no one destination provider established as the cheapest in all locations.

Pay by card in the local currency

For a card purchase, the card issuer converts the local-currency transaction according to its rate and fee schedule. Check both the issuer’s exchange-rate markup and any foreign transaction fee. Moneyland.ch’s comparison of Swiss-market providers found favorable rates for some providers, including Wise and Yuh, in its sampled comparisons; this is not a guarantee that either is cheapest for every cardholder, currency, or transaction. Review current product terms before choosing a provider. Moneyland.ch’s comparison of foreign-currency card costs discusses the sampled rates.

Withdraw cash from a foreign ATM

A foreign withdrawal may involve your card provider’s conversion rate and withdrawal fee as well as a surcharge from the ATM operator. Check your card terms and read the ATM’s fee disclosure before confirming. Bank-operated ATMs may be less costly than some independent operators, but compare the actual terms shown for that withdrawal. Choose the local currency rather than conversion into CHF.

At a foreign terminal or ATM, decline conversion to CHF

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is an offer from a merchant or ATM to convert a local-currency transaction into CHF before processing it. It can make the amount appear immediately in francs, but the offered rate may be unfavorable. Select the local currency and let your card issuer perform the conversion instead. This avoids the DCC rate, but it does not necessarily waive a foreign transaction fee charged by your card issuer. Moneyland.ch recommends choosing the local currency when asked whether to pay in CHF or the local currency. Read its explanation of dynamic currency conversion.

Moneyland.ch’s June 15, 2026 example estimated costs of CHF 25–50 for a €1,000 purchase paid in euros with a typical Swiss credit card, compared with CHF 120–150 when the same purchase was converted into CHF through DCC. Its example for a low-cost provider estimated about CHF 1 when paying in euros versus around CHF 95 with CHF conversion. These are the guide’s example calculations, not a forecast for every card or transaction. The same guide says DCC markups can reach 10% or more in extreme cases; that figure should not be treated as a typical markup.

Why cash and card rates may differ

Physical banknotes and electronic transactions can use different rate types. Moneyland.ch distinguishes banknote rates, used for notes, from forex rates, used for electronic transactions. Their relative cost depends on the provider and applicable fees, so a rate that looks attractive for one route may not be the best deal for another. Moneyland.ch explains the difference between banknote and forex exchange rates.

How to interpret Swiss card-cost comparisons

Moneyland.ch reported that Swiss credit and debit card transactions converting CHF to euros typically had markups of 1–3% above interbank rates in its 2026 guide. That is a reported range, not a quote for every card or currency. Its comparison sampled exchange-rate markups for euros, US dollars, and Thai baht on 14 dates in January and February 2026. Rates and product terms can change, and the sample does not establish the cheapest option for your own transaction. Consult the comparison and check current issuer terms.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Decide how much cash you actually need; do not exchange more than convenience requires without comparing the cost of other ways to pay.
  2. For cash bought in Switzerland, check the banknote rate, all counter or delivery charges, and whether the currency must be ordered.
  3. For card purchases, check the issuer’s conversion rate or markup and its separate foreign transaction fee.
  4. For ATM withdrawals, add your card’s withdrawal and conversion costs to any ATM-operator surcharge disclosed on screen.
  5. At a foreign terminal or ATM, select the local currency and decline conversion into CHF.
  6. Compare the final CHF cost or final amount of foreign currency across the available options for your actual amount and destination.
