For a routine return, contact the seller first: the store handles the order and usually sends an approved refund back to the card or account used at checkout. A digital wallet may only have passed that payment along. If the seller will not resolve an eligible problem, the next step depends on how you paid: contact the card or account issuer, or, for PayPal, consider its separate Buyer Protection process and check its terms for your country and claim type.
First identify how the wallet payment was made
“Digital wallet” can describe different payment arrangements. Google Pay checkout with a linked card or account, Apple Pay using a payment card, and a PayPal transaction do not necessarily have the same refund or dispute route. Check the order receipt and the transaction in your wallet or account to identify the merchant and the payment instrument that was charged.

- Google Pay checkout: Google says it does not hold or process funds for purchases made through a website or app using Google Pay. The merchant handles the purchase and refund. Google’s guidance on paying on an app or website.
- Apple Pay: For a purchase paid with Apple Pay, the merchant processes the return and sends an approved refund to the payment card. Apple’s UK instructions for refunds on Apple Pay card purchases.
- PayPal: PayPal has its own Buyer Protection claim process for eligible purchases. If a card funded the PayPal payment, a dispute with the card issuer may also be relevant; the options and applicable terms are not interchangeable. PayPal’s US Buyer Protection terms.
For an ordinary return, start with the seller
For a change-of-mind return, exchange, or other request covered by the store’s policy, contact the merchant using its stated return process. The merchant has the order and determines whether the return is accepted under its policy. Keep the order confirmation or receipt and the return correspondence so you can refer to what was requested and approved.
Do not assume that opening the wallet app will initiate a store return. For Google Pay website and app purchases, Google directs customers to the merchant for purchase issues; for Apple Pay, Apple likewise says to contact the merchant to process the refund.

Where the refund should appear
An approved refund generally goes back to the payment method used at checkout, not necessarily into a visible wallet balance. Google says refunds return to the checkout payment method and may not appear in Google Wallet history. Apple’s UK guidance says an Apple Pay refund returns to the payment card. Check the bank or card statement associated with the original payment as well as any wallet activity.
If an Apple Pay merchant asks you to identify the card, Apple says you may need the last four digits of the Apple Pay card number shown in Wallet on the device used for the purchase. That number differs from the physical card number. Follow Apple’s instructions to find it rather than assuming the last four digits printed on the card are the right ones.

How long a refund can take
Posting times vary by provider and payment method; the cited estimates are guidance, not a universal guarantee.

If the merchant says the refund has been sent but it has not appeared after the relevant stated period, ask the merchant for an Acquirer Reference Number (ARN) or other trace number. Google recommends sharing that reference with the bank or card issuer so it can trace the refund.

If the merchant will not fix the problem
A return request and a payment dispute are different. If the seller refuses a refund that it owes under its stated policy, does not respond, or the issue concerns non-delivery, a materially misdescribed item, a defect, or an unauthorized charge, ask the institution that issued the card or account about its dispute process and filing deadline. Google specifically directs customers with unresolved third-party purchase issues to their bank or card issuer. Describe the problem accurately; an unauthorized transaction is not the same as a disagreement about a return.
If you paid through PayPal, review its Buyer Protection route as well as any applicable issuer dispute option. PayPal’s US terms say applicable card chargeback rights may be broader than rights under its Purchase Protection program; that does not establish which process will apply or succeed in an individual case.

Keep the return and dispute records together
Save the order confirmation, the seller’s return policy as it applied to the order, messages with the merchant, and any refund confirmation. If you escalate, provide the issuer or PayPal with a clear account of what happened and the dates, along with relevant correspondence. These records can help identify whether the issue is a pending merchant refund or a separate dispute claim.
The guidance here concerns third-party online or app purchases. It does not establish rules for a wallet provider’s own products or services, in-store tap-to-pay returns, gift-card or wallet-balance disputes, subscription cancellations, or consumer-law rights in every country.
