A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Short answer: Samsung inspects trade-in phones and routes them according to condition and potential value. Some may be refurbished or resold, others may provide usable parts, and devices that cannot be reused may be recycled. Samsung does not publish a record showing the final destination of each individual phone, so no one can reliably say that every trade-in is refurbished, resold, or recycled.
For customers in the United States, the practical issue comes first: the credit shown during checkout is conditional. Your phone must be shipped on time and meet the program’s requirements; Samsung’s terms allow a charge if it is late or fails inspection. Samsung’s U.S. trade-in terms describe the customer’s responsibilities and the possible outcomes.
What “Samsung trade-in” can mean
Samsung’s U.S. pages describe more than one route. The distinction matters because evidence about one route does not establish what happens to every phone sent through another.
| Route | What it does | What is publicly established |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung.com purchase trade-in | Applies an estimated trade-in credit toward an eligible new Samsung product. | The credit is subject to the program terms and inspection. The standard U.S. terms require shipment within 15 days after receiving the new product unless a promotion specifies a different period. Samsung U.S. terms |
| Standalone Samsung trade-in | Lets customers trade in an eligible Samsung smartphone without tying the transaction to a new Samsung purchase. | Samsung identifies this U.S. option as independently operated by Likewize. Its handling should not automatically be assumed to describe Samsung.com purchase trade-ins. Samsung trade-in page |
| Certified Re-Newed | Offers selected refurbished Samsung devices for sale. | Samsung says some traded-in devices may be refurbished through this program. That does not mean every trade-in enters its inventory. Samsung Certified Re-Newed |
| Recycling or take-back | Provides a disposal route for electronics, separate from receiving a trade-in credit. | Samsung publishes recycling and take-back information, but recycling availability and terms are distinct from a purchase trade-in. Samsung recycling programs |
The rest of this article focuses on the U.S. Samsung.com purchase trade-in unless stated otherwise. Samsung program rules, operators, and resale arrangements can differ by country; the U.S. terms should not be applied automatically elsewhere.

What happens after you accept the trade-in quote
The displayed value is an estimate tied to the model and condition you report. It is not necessarily a final payment for a device that has already passed inspection. The usual sequence is:
- Choose the model and report its condition. Samsung calculates the offer for an eligible device and qualifying purchase.
- Receive the new product, then ship the old one. The standard U.S. terms give you 15 days after receiving the new product to ship the trade-in, unless the promotion says otherwise. Samsung provides shipping instructions and a prepaid label under the program terms.
- Keep evidence of shipment. Save the carrier receipt and tracking number. Photograph the device and its condition before packing; these records may help if there is a shipping or condition dispute.
- The device is received and assessed. Samsung or an authorized provider checks whether it matches the offer’s eligibility requirements.
- The trade-in is accepted, repriced, or rejected. A mismatch can lead to a charge or a return option under the terms and notice sent to you.
Shipping the device transfers title and ownership under Samsung’s U.S. terms. If Samsung accepts it, the phone generally is not returned even if you later return the new Samsung product.
What the inspection checks
Samsung publishes eligibility requirements, but not a complete proprietary inspection sequence or a promise that every listed function is tested in the same way. The published requirements show the main issues that can affect acceptance:

- Display and physical condition: Display failures, black spots, pixelation, cracks, dents, missing parts, or other damage can affect eligibility and value. A current promotion may permit some cracked screens at a reduced value, but the live offer and its specific terms control.
- Water damage and corrosion: Samsung’s standard terms identify water damage and corrosion as potential disqualifiers.
- Device identity and eligibility: Model, storage, carrier or network status, ownership, and other program conditions may matter. Samsung’s requirements and current offer should be checked for the particular phone.
- Accounts and locks: A remaining account or activation lock can prevent reuse and jeopardize eligibility, even if the phone is physically sound.
Samsung’s trade-in FAQ and requirements help page explain the customer-facing criteria. They do not disclose enough to identify a specific inspection technology or the exact route an individual device takes afterward.

Where an accepted phone may go
Samsung’s public information supports several possible outcomes, not one universal destination. The most defensible way to understand the pipeline is as a value-and-condition triage process:
- Reuse or resale if the phone is marketable. A working device may be wiped and resold. Likewize’s Samsung-branded standalone trade-in site says working devices in that route are wiped, restored to factory settings, and resold. This evidence applies specifically to the Likewize-operated standalone program, not automatically to every Samsung.com trade-in. Likewize’s Samsung trade-in site
- Refurbish if repair makes economic sense. Selected used phones may be repaired, tested, and offered through a refurbishment channel. Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed program establishes that some traded-in devices can return to market as refurbished products; Samsung does not publish the share of trade-ins that do so or say that every phone is rebuilt by Samsung technicians. Certified Re-Newed details
- Recover usable parts where appropriate. A phone that is not suitable for a retail resale channel may still have components worth recovering. Samsung’s public policy describes reuse and upcycling, but it does not publish a device-by-device parts-recovery record.
- Recycle material that cannot be reused. Samsung says non-working devices can be disassembled to recover materials such as glass, metals, plastics, and batteries. Its e-waste policy establishes a framework for reuse, upcycling, recycling, and vendor requirements; it is not proof that every returned phone follows an identical path. Samsung on refurbishment and material recovery and Samsung Electronics America E-Waste Disposition Policy, July 17, 2025
The economics help explain why routes differ: condition, repair cost, resale demand, remaining software support, battery health, and potential parts value can all affect whether a phone is worth restoring. That is a general explanation of the likely triage logic, not a Samsung-published scoring formula.

Do Samsung trade-ins become Certified Re-Newed phones?
Some may; Samsung says some traded-in devices may be refurbished through Certified Re-Newed. The program sells selected refurbished Samsung phones that Samsung says are rebuilt and tested, with a warranty. It is a resale channel for qualifying devices, not a label applied to every used phone Samsung receives. Samsung does not publicly identify which customer trade-in becomes which Certified Re-Newed listing.
What happens if the phone fails inspection?
A rejected phone is not necessarily destroyed immediately. Under the U.S. terms, Samsung may determine that a device qualifies for no trade-in value and charge the trade-in value previously applied to the purchase. The terms provide a process to request return of a rejected device; the customer must respond within the period stated in Samsung’s written offer, which the standard terms specify as seven days. If the customer does not request the return in time, Samsung may not return the device. Review the notice promptly and follow its instructions. Samsung U.S. trade-in terms

These outcomes are different: a rejected device returned after a timely request is not the same as a device the customer leaves with Samsung. The public terms do not establish the final disposition of every rejected phone that is not reclaimed.

When Samsung can charge you
Under the standard U.S. terms, Samsung may charge the original payment method in two important situations:
- Late or missing shipment: If you do not ship the phone within the applicable deadline, Samsung may apply a non-return charge equal to the trade-in value credited to the purchase.
- Condition or eligibility mismatch: If inspection finds that the phone fails the program requirements, Samsung may apply a device-condition charge, potentially equal to the credit already applied.
Promotions can specify a different shipping period or conditions, so check the live offer and the terms attached to your order. If the device is rejected, use the written notice to understand the charge and any return option rather than assuming the first checkout estimate is final.

Samsung makes data removal the customer’s responsibility and disclaims responsibility for personal data left on the device. A partner may wipe a device during processing, but that is not a substitute for preparing it yourself. Account removal and lock removal matter in addition to resetting the phone.

What Samsung discloses—and what remains unknown
Samsung publicly documents the customer-facing rules, including eligibility, shipping, data removal, ownership transfer, charges, and rejected-device procedures. It also describes Certified Re-Newed, recycling programs, and environmental requirements for covered vendors and downstream partners. Those disclosures explain the system’s broad options, but not the route of one particular phone.
- Not publicly established at the individual-device level: the percentage of Samsung.com trade-ins resold, refurbished, dismantled for parts, or sent directly to material recycling.
- Not publicly identified comprehensively: every downstream buyer, auction or wholesale channel, or processor used for each program and region.
- Not traceable from public records: whether a specific customer’s phone enters Certified Re-Newed inventory or the precise chain of custody and data-erasure record for that handset.
Samsung’s sustainability pages describe collection, reuse, refurbishment, and recycling goals and activities. They do not provide a life-cycle assessment for each traded-in phone, so they cannot quantify the environmental benefit of a particular customer’s trade-in. Samsung responsible recycling
Trade in, sell privately, or recycle?
| Option | May suit you if | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung purchase trade-in | You are buying an eligible Samsung product and the quoted credit is attractive compared with your likely alternatives. | Convenient, but subject to shipping deadlines and post-receipt inspection; a condition mismatch can result in a charge. |
| Standalone Samsung trade-in | You want to sell an eligible Samsung phone without buying a new Samsung product. | Samsung identifies Likewize as the independent operator; check that route’s current quote and terms. |
| Private sale | Your phone is a recent, desirable model in good condition and you are prepared to manage the sale. | Potentially more control over price, but you handle listing, negotiation, payment and shipping risks, and buyer disputes. |
| Recycle or take back | The phone has little resale value, cannot safely or reasonably be reused, or responsible disposal matters more than a credit. | It may yield no trade-in payment. For a swollen or damaged lithium-ion battery, use an appropriate battery or e-waste channel rather than ordinary household trash or casual shipment. |
Compare the live trade-in quote with realistic alternatives, not a best-case private-sale listing. If a phone is financed, leased, locked, or damaged, check the relevant obligations and eligibility before sending it: Samsung’s U.S. terms leave outstanding financing or contract responsibilities with the customer, and a leased device generally must be purchased first.
