Google and Apple reportedly warned some employees who needed new U.S. visa stamps to think carefully before traveling abroad, because consular delays could leave them unable to return on schedule. The warning was not a government travel ban or a blanket order covering every visa holder. The key question for an individual traveler is whether existing documents are enough to seek re-entry—or whether the trip would require a new visa process abroad.
What Google and Apple reportedly told employees
In reports published December 19–20, 2025, Business Insider said it reviewed internal immigration guidance from Berry Appleman & Leiden (BAL), which advises Google, and Fragomen, which advises Apple. The guidance reportedly urged employees who would need visa stamping to return to the United States to avoid or reconsider international travel because appointments and processing could take a long time. TechCrunch’s account of the report said the companies had not immediately provided public comment; the memos should therefore be understood as reported internal advice, not public company policy statements.
Reuters reported that the Google guidance covered H-1B, H-4, F, J and M visa holders. Later coverage named other technology companies, but that does not establish that every company sent the same advice or that every employee in those categories received identical instructions. Reuters’ report carried by Investing.com described some embassy and consulate delays as reaching up to 12 months. That figure was reported in December 2025 for some posts; it was not a State Department guarantee or a current estimate for every location.
This was a re-entry warning, not a travel ban
The reported advice concerned the practical risk of being unable to return promptly after leaving the United States. It is distinct from a presidential entry ban, a visa revocation, cancellation of an approved petition, or a rule making international travel illegal for all H-1B workers. The available reporting does not establish that every Google or Apple employee with a visa received the same instruction.

Risk depends on the traveler’s documents, immigration situation, nationality, destination and consular post. Someone with an unexpired visa stamp may face a different stamping risk from someone whose stamp has expired, but a valid stamp alone does not guarantee admission or resolve every underlying immigration issue.
Why a visa stamp and immigration status are different
Several documents and decisions are often described casually as “the visa,” but they serve different purposes:

- Status is the immigration classification and authorized stay a person has while in the United States.
- Visa stamp is generally the document a foreign national uses to seek admission to the United States at a port of entry. If it has expired, the traveler may need to apply for a new one abroad before returning, subject to any applicable exception.
- Approval notice records an approved petition or change or extension of status. It is not itself a visa stamp.
- Admission is the decision made by a U.S. border officer when a traveler seeks entry, including the authorized period of stay.
A person can be lawfully present in the United States while holding an expired visa stamp. Departing may mean needing a new consular visa to return. An appointment delay, additional administrative processing or a delay returning the passport can therefore disrupt a planned return even if an underlying petition remains approved. A travel warning about being stranded abroad is principally about that return process, not proof that the person’s existing status or petition has automatically ended.
What changed in December 2025
On December 3, 2025, the State Department announced expanded online-presence review for H-1B and H-4 visa applicants, effective December 15, 2025. It also said affected applicants, along with F, M and J applicants, should make social-media profiles publicly viewable for vetting. The department described this as security and public-safety screening. The announcement applied to visa applicants and dependents; it did not say that every person already in the United States with a valid, unexpired visa stamp had to leave or reapply. Keep four things separate: the official screening policy, reports of appointments being canceled or rescheduled, the advice reportedly sent by companies’ immigration counsel, and broader immigration-policy uncertainty. The State Department did not announce a universal 12-month H-1B appointment delay, and its screening announcement does not say that social-media review automatically results in denial or a fixed-length delay.
Who may face more risk when traveling
The practical issue is not simply whether someone holds a particular visa category. It is whether the person can return using existing documents or must complete consular processing abroad. These examples describe relative concerns, not guarantees about admission or visa issuance.

Rules and practical conditions can also vary by nationality and post. Check for separate country-specific entry restrictions or consular-service disruptions rather than assuming that a global news story describes every destination.

The December 2025 “up to 12 months” figure should not be used as a current worldwide wait-time estimate. The State Department says appointment availability varies by post, workload and staffing; its public wait-time information is the place to check a particular embassy or consulate. Estimates can change and exclude passport-delivery time, so the interview date is not the date a traveler can count on having a visa in hand. The State Department’s July 2026 guidance on where nonimmigrant applicants should schedule interviews is also important if a traveler is considering applying outside their country of residence. Read the applicable post’s instructions and confirm that it will accept the application before building travel plans around it. See the July 2026 guidance.
Before booking international travel
- Check the visa stamp’s expiration date. Do not use the petition or approval-notice expiration date as a substitute.
- Check your passport. Confirm its validity and whether it has enough blank pages for the relevant process.
- Ask your employer’s immigration team or counsel in writing whether your trip requires stamping or another consular step, and whether a pending case could be affected by departure.
- Check the specific embassy or consulate. Confirm appointment availability, local instructions, whether it accepts applicants in your circumstances and any post-specific changes.
- Budget time for the full process: appointment scheduling, interview, possible administrative processing and passport return.
- Do not rely on an appointment date alone when choosing a nonrefundable return flight or setting a required return date.
- Confirm the documents you need to carry. Depending on the case, these may include the passport, visa, approval notice, employment verification and relevant travel records.
- Watch your email and appointment portal for cancellations, rescheduling notices or requests for additional information.
- Make a contingency plan for remote work, leave, housing, dependents and payroll if the return is delayed. Working abroad may raise separate employer, tax, labor or immigration issues.
If you cannot postpone the trip
Discuss the case with employer immigration counsel or a qualified immigration attorney before departure. Useful questions include:
- Is a new visa stamp actually required for this return, or does a narrow exception apply?
- Does the relevant post accept applications from someone of this nationality and residence category?
- Could a pending change of status, extension or transfer be affected by travel?
- What is known about administrative-processing risk in this case, and what should happen if the consulate issues a 221(g) request?
- What documents should the employer provide, and how would a delayed return affect work authorization, payroll or employment?
- Can the employer support work from abroad, and what separate tax, labor or immigration questions would that create?
Automatic visa revalidation is a narrow exception with eligibility rules and exclusions; it is not a general answer to expired-stamp travel. Have counsel assess whether it applies to the specific traveler and itinerary. This article provides general information, not individual legal advice.
What remains uncertain
The company warnings were reported through internal memos reviewed by Business Insider and described by other outlets; they were not presented as a public, company-wide travel policy. The reporting does not establish that every visa holder at either company received the same message. Nor does the official screening announcement establish that every applicant will face a particular delay or outcome. An individual decision depends on the case, documents, nationality, consular post and current appointment conditions.
