Starlink service does not have one automatic outcome when a provider loses local approval. If Starlink or its local operating company loses authorization to provide service, a regulator may order it to stop, and Starlink’s country-specific terms may allow suspension or termination. If only a reseller loses its appointment, that may block new sales or support through that reseller, but it does not by itself prove that every existing customer will be disconnected.
First, identify who lost approval—and which approval
“Local approval” can refer to separate permissions: authorization to operate a satellite network or provide service, approval for equipment, rules about who may subscribe, or a reseller’s appointment. Losing one does not establish that the others were also revoked.
The practical distinction is whether the notice names Starlink or its local operating company, or instead names a distributor or reseller. Also check whether the regulator has issued a stop order, allowed a transition period, restricted only new subscriptions, or addressed a narrower issue such as equipment or customer eligibility.
What can happen in each situation
| Situation | Possible effect | What is not established automatically |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink or its local operating company lacks a required service authorization | The regulator may prohibit booking or providing service. Starlink’s terms may allow it to suspend or terminate access where required government authorizations are not obtained or maintained. | A global, identical shutdown process or a guaranteed notice period. The applicable country terms and regulator’s order matter. |
| A regulator orders Starlink to stop or limits service | Service may be halted or restricted within the order’s geographic, customer, or service scope and from its effective date. | That every Starlink service in the country is covered, unless the order says so. |
| Only a reseller or distributor loses its appointment | That intermediary may no longer be permitted to sell, activate, install, distribute, or support Starlink service or equipment. | That all existing accounts will automatically disconnect, transfer to Starlink, or receive refunds. The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal rule for those outcomes. |
| Equipment approval or user eligibility changes | Specific terminals or classes of customers may be affected, depending on local rules. | That the network authorization or every customer’s account has also been revoked. |
Starlink’s terms allow suspension when authorization is missing
Starlink’s consumer terms surfaced for Ecuador say the company may suspend or terminate some or all account access for failure to obtain or maintain government authorizations required to provide service. The terms are country-specific; do not assume that an Ecuador version governs an account elsewhere. Check the version applicable to the account and any notice sent directly by Starlink.

Starlink’s terms also prohibit unauthorized resale. That matters if a customer bought through an intermediary, but it does not answer whether an existing account will remain active after that intermediary loses its appointment. The customer’s contract, account status, local rules, and any regulator or Starlink notice are decisive.
Official examples show why country and date matter
India: a stop-booking direction in 2021
On November 30, 2021, India’s Ministry of Communications said Starlink had not obtained the required authorization for services being booked. The ministry said the government had asked the company to comply with the regulatory framework and “refrain from booking/rendering such services in India with immediate effect,” and advised the public not to subscribe to advertised service. This is evidence that a regulator can direct an immediate halt; it does not establish India’s current authorization status.

Lebanon: licensing conditions and a formally appointed distributor
Lebanon’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority published Decision 2/2026 in the Official Gazette on January 22, 2026, setting technical, operational, and investment conditions related to licensing Starlink Lebanon S.A.L. In an FAQ published March 17, 2026, and last modified September 23, 2026, the TRA says only a party formally appointed by Starlink and compliant with Lebanese requirements may sell, market, distribute, activate, install, or otherwise provide Starlink services or equipment. The FAQ names Alfa as the official distributor.
That same FAQ says residential and individual subscriptions are not authorized under Lebanon’s current framework, tourist or visitor roaming is not permitted, and private terminal importation is prohibited. These are Lebanon-specific rules, not worldwide Starlink policy. They also illustrate why a terminal or a roaming plan should not be treated as a workaround for local restrictions.

What to check before deciding what to do
- Read the notice closely. Identify the country, the entity named, the approval involved, the effective date, geographic scope, covered services, and any transition arrangement. Distinguish a direction to stop service from a restriction on new subscriptions or on one intermediary.
- Check your account and contract. Review the country-specific Starlink terms, your purchase or service agreement, and direct email or account notices. If you contracted with a reseller, check what that contract says about service interruption, billing, and cancellation.
- Ask Starlink support about your account. Ask whether service remains active directly, whether an account transfer is available, and how billing or refunds will be handled. Treat none of those outcomes as guaranteed unless the applicable terms or notice confirms them.
- Do not rely on imported hardware or roaming without checking local rules. A Starlink kit is physical equipment; owning it does not preserve access where service is not authorized or available. Local restrictions may separately cover imported terminals, roaming, or eligible users.
What this means for your bill and equipment
A service interruption can leave two separate questions: whether the account can still access the network, and what happens to payments or equipment. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal refund, grace period, account transfer, or automatic cancellation after a provider loses approval. Check the terms for your country, your contract, the regulator’s order, and any account-specific message before stopping payment or buying replacement equipment.
