The incident was not reported as a failure of Cancún International Airport’s own radar. Riviera Maya News attributed the outage to staffing and budget problems cited by the National Union of Air Traffic Controllers (SINACTA); that explanation was not independently confirmed.
What happened to Cancún flights?
Riviera Maya News reported on March 15, 2025, that a surveillance radar outage at Cenamer disrupted aircraft operating above 20,000 feet. Cenamer, based in Honduras, monitors aircraft over Central American countries and coordinates with the Mérida control center for southern Mexico, according to the report. It said the disruption began around 2:26 p.m. Central Mexico time and the airspace was closed for about an hour while an ATC ZERO contingency protocol suspended traffic until authorities restored safe operating conditions. These incident details are the outlet’s account, not independently confirmed here. Riviera Maya News report
The reported effects extended beyond Cancún: the outlet listed flights serving Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, along with some international connecting traffic. Riviera Maya News report
Were 17 Cancún flights delayed?
No. The report says at least 17 Cancún in- and outbound flights were affected, not that all 17 were delayed. It attributed this breakdown to ASUR: nine flights were diverted, one returned to its origin, and seven were grounded. The categories add up to 17, but the outlet did not characterize all of them as delays. Riviera Maya News report on the ASUR-attributed breakdown

Did Cancún airport have a radar failure?
The reported failure was at Cenamer, a regional air-traffic-control center in Honduras—not at Cancún International Airport. The distinction matters: an airport can experience flight disruption because of a problem in the airspace or control network without its own radar system failing. Riviera Maya News linked ASUR to the flight-disposition figures, but that does not establish that the airport operator caused the outage. What was the budget explanation?
Riviera Maya News attributed the claim that limited personnel due to budget issues caused the failure to SINACTA. The union’s original post and an official technical finding were not located, so this should be treated as an attributed union explanation—not a confirmed cause. The article also reproduced a purported SINACTA statement and attributed remarks to its secretary general, but those underlying materials were not independently located. Riviera Maya News report

What should affected passengers do?
- Check your flight with the airline. Review the carrier’s current flight status and any messages about changes to your itinerary.
- Contact the carrier about your booking. Ask what applies to your specific flight and whether it has been rebooked, diverted or cancelled.
Mexico’s consumer-protection agency says airlines must promptly inform passengers of itinerary changes or other circumstances affecting the contracted service through calls, email, text messages or another electronic means. That guidance appeared in a separate notice about IT failures; it does not establish compensation or accommodation rights for this radar outage. Mexico consumer-protection agency notice
