NCIX did not disappear because of one bad decision or because Amazon alone “killed” it. The Canadian computer retailer was weakened by years of online competition, costly physical operations, operational problems, and declining customer confidence. After a late attempt to close stores and focus on e-commerce, Netlink Computer Inc.—the company behind NCIX—filed for bankruptcy in British Columbia on December 1, 2017.
What was NCIX?
NCIX, legally known as Netlink Computer Inc., was founded by Steve Wu in British Columbia in 1996. It began selling online in 1997 and grew into one of Canada’s best-known computer-parts retailers, with physical locations in British Columbia and Ontario and online customers in Canada and the United States.

Its core business was computer hardware: processors, graphics cards, memory, storage, cases, peripherals, software, and other components used to build or upgrade PCs. At a time when buying individual parts online was less familiar to mainstream shoppers, NCIX offered a useful combination of specialist knowledge, broad selection, price matching, and local pickup.

Why did customers like NCIX?
- Component selection: NCIX was associated with a deeper range of PC parts than many mainstream electronics retailers.
- Price matching: Matching competitors’ prices made specialist hardware shopping more attractive.
- Local pickup: Customers could avoid shipping delays and obtain parts locally.
- Technical familiarity: Its staff and brand were closely associated with enthusiast PC hardware.
- Community identity: NCIX was part of the culture surrounding do-it-yourself computer building in Canada.
Customer memories are mixed. Community discussions document both strong loyalty and frustration with service, inventory, shipping, and refunds. Those accounts help illustrate the customer experience, but they are not evidence of the company’s audited financial condition. See examples in discussions on r/bapccanada and r/bapcsalescanada.

Why did NCIX decline?
Online competition changed the economics
Computer components are unusually easy to compare. Customers can check specifications, prices, stock, reviews, and shipping options across multiple retailers before placing an order. That transparency puts pressure on margins and makes it difficult for a seller to charge more simply because it has a recognizable brand.
Online-first competitors such as Amazon and Newegg could serve customers nationally without carrying the same network of storefronts. Their scale also raised expectations for selection, delivery speed, order tracking, and returns.
Amazon and Newegg were therefore important competitive pressures, but saying they “killed NCIX” is too simple. They exposed weaknesses in a business that was already carrying substantial costs and struggling to deliver a consistent customer experience.

Stores became harder to justify
Physical stores were not automatically a mistake. For PC enthusiasts, a nearby store offered convenience, advice, pickup, and sometimes same-day access to an urgently needed part. But stores also brought leases, staffing, utilities, inventory commitments, warehousing, and other fixed expenses.
That cost structure became more difficult to sustain in a price-sensitive market. A customer might use a store for pickup while still comparing the price against retailers nationwide. In that environment, a location had to provide enough convenience or service to justify its cost.
NCIX’s 2017 closures show that management recognized the problem. In November, the Richmond Sentinel reported that the company was closing several Lower Mainland locations while restructuring and redirecting attention toward online sales.
The online operation also had to be reliable
Closing stores can reduce costs, but it does not rescue a retailer by itself. The remaining online business must be able to compete on price, stock accuracy, fulfillment, customer support, returns, and refunds.
Contemporary reports described shipping delays and pending orders during the restructuring. That matters because customer trust is a financial asset for an online retailer: when shoppers are unsure whether an order will ship or a refund will arrive, they stop placing new orders. Lower sales then make it harder to pay suppliers, staff, carriers, and other operating costs.

The market was broader than enthusiast PC building
NCIX’s identity was strongly tied to individual components and do-it-yourself computers. That specialization created loyalty, but it also exposed the company to shifts in consumer behavior. Some buyers moved toward complete branded desktops, gaming laptops, prebuilt gaming PCs, consoles, or mainstream electronics retailers.

This does not mean PC building disappeared. It means a component retailer had to win customers on more than expertise and selection. It needed a business model that remained profitable as purchasing moved online and consumers became more comfortable comparing products without visiting a specialist store.
What happened during the final months?
The collapse became visible in stages rather than through one sudden event. NCIX closed Ontario stores and its Markham office in July 2017. Later that year, it announced a restructuring focused more heavily on online sales. In November, it closed five Lower Mainland locations, followed by the final Richmond retail operation.
By early December, all retail locations had closed and the company had filed for bankruptcy. TechSpot and other contemporary coverage warned consumers to be cautious about placing new orders because delivery and refund problems could arise during the insolvency process.
The sequence is important: store closures were part of an attempted turnaround and a visible symptom of the company’s distress. They were not, by themselves, the legal cause of the bankruptcy. The underlying problem was that the restructuring came after the company’s competitive and operational position had already deteriorated substantially.

What happened to customers’ orders, refunds, and warranties?
Customers affected by NCIX’s collapse did not all have the same remedy. The outcome depended on the payment method, when the transaction occurred, whether the item had shipped, and the status of the insolvency proceedings.
Common situations included:
- Paid but unshipped orders: A customer might have needed to pursue a claim through the insolvency process or contact the payment provider.
- Store pickups: A pickup order could become difficult to complete if the location closed before the product was released.
- Credit-card payments: A cardholder might have had chargeback options, subject to the issuer’s rules and applicable deadlines.
- Gift cards and store credit: These can become unsecured claims in an insolvency and are not automatically equivalent to cash.
- Retailer warranties or service orders: These may be difficult to enforce when the retailer is no longer operating.
- Manufacturer warranties: A product maker’s warranty may remain available, but it depends on the manufacturer’s terms, proof of purchase, and whether the product is covered directly.

What happened to the stores?
NCIX’s stores disappeared in stages. Ontario locations closed first, followed by several Lower Mainland locations and then the remaining Richmond retail presence.
Some former NCIX leases were later taken over by Canada Computers, according to later reporting. That does not mean every former NCIX site became a Canada Computers location; successor occupancy varied by property. Readers considering a current retailer should check the store’s present ownership, inventory, return policy, and pickup terms rather than relying on the old NCIX address.
What about NCIX Tech Tips?
NCIX also left a media legacy. Its company-run technology-video presence helped create a recognizable identity around the retailer, and Linus Sebastian’s early work at NCIX later became associated with the growth of Linus Media Group and Linus Tech Tips.

The distinction matters: the later independent media company was not NCIX continuing under a new name. The video channel’s popularity also should not be treated as a cause of, or solution to, the retailer’s financial problems. It was a cultural footnote to the company’s history. Notebookcheck covered the connection in its reporting on the collapse.
Was there an NCIX data breach?
A separate controversy emerged after the commercial collapse. Reports in 2018 raised concerns that NCIX-related servers containing historical business or customer information had not been securely wiped before being offered for sale online.
The available reporting does not establish a definitive number of affected people, the complete contents of the servers, or a final regulator finding that would support claims that every customer’s payment data was exposed. It also does not show that the incident caused the bankruptcy; the reported server-sale controversy came afterward.

The careful conclusion is that the reports raised legitimate concerns about data disposal during an insolvency, while the exact scope of any exposure remains uncertain. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia’s investigation index is the appropriate place to look for publicly available regulatory material. An archival discussion of the controversy is available through Ars Technica’s forum.
What NCIX’s failure says about Canadian PC retail
- A loyal community is not the same as a profitable business. Enthusiast goodwill can build a brand, but it cannot overcome unsustainable costs or unreliable fulfillment.
- Stores need a clear economic purpose. Local pickup and expert help can justify a physical location, but only if the resulting sales and service value cover the additional expense.
- An online pivot must happen before a crisis. Reducing stores after delays, refund concerns, and customer distrust have already emerged is much harder than adapting while the company is healthy.
- Customer trust can vanish quickly. In e-commerce, a single unresolved order may discourage future purchases not only from one customer, but from an entire community.
- Bankruptcy is an outcome, not a complete explanation. NCIX’s filing was the endpoint of interacting pressures: competition, cost structure, operational deterioration, and a late restructuring.
Where Canadian PC builders shop now
There is no exact one-for-one replacement for every part of NCIX’s historical model. Depending on the purchase, readers may consider:
- Canada Computers for a broad Canadian store network and local pickup.
- Memory Express for specialist PC retail and service in the regions it serves.
- Newegg Canada for online component selection, while checking whether an item is sold directly by Newegg or by a marketplace seller.
- Amazon Canada for convenience and fulfillment breadth, with careful attention to seller identity, returns, warranty handling, and product authenticity.
- Best Buy Canada for laptops, prebuilt systems, peripherals, and mainstream electronics.
- PCPartPicker Canada for compatibility planning and price comparison. It is a planning tool, not a retailer.
Prices, stock, shipping thresholds, and return terms change frequently, so shoppers should verify current conditions before paying—especially for expensive components or marketplace listings.
The bottom line
NCIX was a significant part of Canada’s PC-building era because it made enthusiast hardware more accessible through online ordering, local stores, price matching, and technical familiarity. It declined when that hybrid model became harder to support against larger online competitors and rising expectations for fast, dependable e-commerce.
