700Credit, a dealership-services provider, reported a cybersecurity incident that affected 5,836,521 people. Exposed records may include names, addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. 700Credit said it had not identified evidence of identity theft or fraud linked to the incident when it notified consumers, but the information is sensitive enough to justify immediate precautions.

If you received a breach or settlement notice, freeze your credit with all three nationwide bureaus, review your reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, and check the official settlement site before the September 22, 2026 claim deadline. The proposed settlement is not yet final.

What is 700Credit?

700Credit is not Equifax, Experian or TransUnion. It provides automobile dealerships with services such as credit-report access, credit checks, identity verification, fraud detection and regulatory-compliance tools. A consumer may never have opened a 700Credit account. Their information could have been processed through a dealership’s systems during a vehicle purchase or financing application.

That distinction matters: the disclosed incident involved a 700Credit web application and records handled for dealership clients. It does not, based on the sources available, establish that any of the three nationwide credit bureaus was breached.

What happened and when?

700Credit’s consumer notice says it detected suspicious activity on or around October 25, 2025 and found that an unauthorized party copied records from its web application. Maine’s breach filing lists the incident period as October 25–27, 2025 and the discovery date as November 21, 2025.

Michigan’s attorney general described the relevant consumer data as having been collected through dealership activity between May and October 2025. That is not necessarily the period during which attackers had access. It describes the time span represented by the affected records, while the Maine filing identifies a shorter incident period.

  • May–October 2025: Relevant consumer data was collected through dealership activity, according to Michigan’s attorney general.
  • October 25, 2025: 700Credit detected suspicious activity.
  • October 25–27, 2025: Incident period listed in Maine’s filing.
  • November 21, 2025: Discovery date reported in Maine’s filing.
  • December 10, 2025: Michigan issued a consumer alert.
  • December 12, 2025: California’s breach database recorded the 700Credit filing.
  • July–August 2026: Settlement notices were sent to class members.

The available official disclosures support describing this as unauthorized access or copying of records in a 700Credit web application. They do not establish more specific theories about an API or supply-chain attack.

How many people were affected?

Maine’s breach filing reports 5,836,521 affected people. That is the strongest precise figure currently cited in the state filings. “At least 5.6 million” is broadly accurate, while “about 5.8 million” is closer to the filed total. Michigan described the impact as nearly 6 million people nationwide.

State filings illustrate that the incident affected consumers in multiple states. For example, Washington reported 121,828 affected residents, while Maine reported 19,225.

These figures should not be added together: they are state-level portions of the broader reported population.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

What information was exposed?

The consumer notice identifies four categories of information that may have appeared in copied records:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number

The exact combination may vary from person to person. Do not assume that every affected individual had every listed data element exposed.

Social Security numbers and dates of birth are particularly important because they can be used in attempts to open new credit accounts or impersonate consumers. Exposure does not prove that the information has been misused, but it does make preventive action sensible.

Does a breach notice mean identity theft occurred?

No. 700Credit said it had not identified evidence of identity theft or fraud resulting from the incident and had no indication at the time of notification that the information had been misused.

That statement is not a guarantee that misuse cannot occur later. Continue checking reports and financial accounts, and treat unexpected calls, emails or texts about the breach as possible phishing attempts.

How to find out whether you were affected

  1. Look for a mailed notice from 700Credit, a dealership, TransUnion/CyberScout or the settlement administrator.
  2. Search for an email or postcard received in July or August 2026 with settlement instructions.
  3. If you lost the notice, contact the settlement administrator at 1-877-502-7785, using the number published on the official settlement site.
  4. Do not enter your Social Security number or other sensitive information into an unofficial law-firm form or social-media claim page simply because it mentions 700Credit.

The settlement website says eligibility to file a claim requires receiving an email or postcard notice. Use the official domain: 700creditdatabreachsettlement.com.

What affected consumers should do now

1. Preserve the notice

Keep the breach letter, settlement postcard or email, enrollment code, claim confirmation and any records of suspicious activity. Photograph or scan paper documents, but store them securely.

2. Freeze all three credit reports

A security freeze restricts prospective creditors from accessing a credit file for most new-credit applications. It is generally the strongest free preventive step when a Social Security number may have been exposed.

Place freezes directly with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You will need to temporarily lift or remove a freeze when applying for credit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A freeze does not stop takeover of existing accounts, tax or unemployment fraud, phishing or every other form of identity theft.

3. Review your credit reports

Obtain reports from the federally authorized site, AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for unfamiliar hard inquiries, new accounts, collection accounts, address changes and accounts you do not recognize.

4. Turn on financial-account alerts

Enable transaction, login, password-change and new-payee alerts with banks, card issuers and other financial institutions. Contact an institution through its official app or website—not through a link in an unexpected message—if anything looks wrong.

5. Use the offered monitoring

The breach notice says 700Credit is offering complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. The duration and enrollment instructions may vary by notice, so follow the exact instructions in your letter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitoring can alert you to certain changes, but it does not block someone from applying for credit and does not detect every type of identity misuse. It does not replace a freeze.

6. Treat breach-related messages cautiously

Do not provide a caller or email sender with your full Social Security number, bank password or one-time authentication code. Navigate manually to the official settlement domain rather than clicking an unexpected claim link.

Freeze versus fraud alert

Protection What it does Best suited for
Security freeze Restricts access to a credit report for most new-credit applications. People seeking the strongest prevention against new-account fraud.
Initial fraud alert Asks prospective creditors to take additional steps to verify identity; it does not block access. People who want less restrictive protection or suspect fraud.
Extended fraud alert Generally lasts seven years and is available to confirmed identity-theft victims. People who have completed the required identity-theft documentation.

You only need to contact one bureau to place an initial fraud alert; that bureau must notify the other two.

  • Alternative payment: Eligible claimants may request $50, also subject to pro rata reduction and court approval.

Documentation for a loss claim

The administrator may require clear supporting records, such as credit-card or bank statements, invoices, telephone records and receipts. A personal certification, declaration or affidavit alone is not sufficient to document losses.

Redact unrelated transactions and all but the first four and last four digits of account numbers where applicable. Uploaded files must be under 20 MB per file and use a file format accepted by the administrator.

If you do nothing, you will not receive a settlement payment. If the settlement becomes final, eligible class members may also be bound by its terms, although the notice says they may still be able to receive credit monitoring using their activation code.

What if you find signs of fraud?

  1. Contact the lender, creditor or financial institution through an official channel and report the account or transaction as unauthorized.
  2. Change compromised passwords and enable multifactor authentication, especially for email and financial accounts.
  3. Dispute unfamiliar accounts or inquiries with the relevant creditor and credit bureau.
  4. File an identity-theft report at IdentityTheft.gov.
  5. File a police report if a creditor, insurer or other institution requires one for its investigation.
  6. Keep copies of reports, dispute letters, confirmations and any related expenses.

Should you pay for identity monitoring?

Not automatically. Start with the free steps: a three-bureau freeze, official credit reports, financial-account alerts and the complimentary monitoring described in your notice.

A paid service may be useful if you want centralized alerts, identity-restoration assistance or insurance-style benefits. However, paid monitoring commonly overlaps with free bureau alerts and breach-provided monitoring, and it generally does not replace a security freeze. Compare coverage, cancellation terms, reimbursement limits and the types of accounts monitored before paying for a subscription.

How to avoid 700Credit settlement scams

  • Use only 700creditdatabreachsettlement.com and the instructions in your official notice.
  • Navigate to the site manually instead of clicking an unexpected email link.
  • Never pay a fee to submit a settlement claim.
  • Do not give anyone your full Social Security number, bank password or one-time authentication code.
  • Verify the administrator’s phone number against the official site or notice.
  • Be suspicious of guaranteed-payout promises or requests to sign a separate attorney agreement.
