A fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. on March 9, 2026, inside Cargill’s soybean crush plant at 1401 N. Mosley in Wichita, Kansas. Firefighters found a large soybean dryer burning and later evacuated while a fireball and concerns about further explosions and structural damage changed the response. A worker initially thought possibly trapped was found safe; no employee or firefighter injuries were reported.

How the fire unfolded

Wichita Fire Department’s April 2026 incident report says firefighters were initially dispatched to check an appliance call. While responding, Engine Company 1 saw substantial smoke and requested a building-fire response. Crews then found a large soybean dryer burning inside the plant. The department described the dryer as 100 feet tall.

Firefighters requested a second alarm. As smoke conditions changed rapidly, a large fireball ignited from the structure. Crews cleared the reported area of a possibly trapped worker, then evacuated because they were concerned about additional smoke explosions and structural compromise. The response shifted to a defensive operation, with crews working for several hours and remaining at the scene overnight.

Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz described the tactics to The Wichita Eagle on March 10: “Initial fire attack lines were stretched but due to the smoke and heat conditions aerial operations were put in place on two (sides of) the building,” with firefighters directing water through vents.

What happened to the worker and employees

The report of a possibly trapped worker was resolved: the person had been outside and was missed during a head count. The Wichita Fire Department report and contemporaneous Wichita Eagle coverage say all Cargill employees were accounted for. Ocadiz told the paper that no employees or firefighters were injured.

When the plant restarted

On March 12, Cargill spokesperson April Nelson told The Wichita Eagle, “Our facility has safely restarted and will begin accepting soybean deliveries again this week.” That statement referred to the week of March 12, 2026; it is not confirmation of the facility’s current operating status.

What is known about the cause and damage

The available reporting identifies the soybean dryer as the equipment burning, but does not establish a final cause for the fire. Ocadiz said on March 10 that the fire was under investigation. The March 12 restart report did not quantify the damage, and the extent of the damage was not disclosed in the cited coverage.

How large is the plant’s reported capacity?

Reuters, in a March 10 report republished by Successful Farming, attributed an estimate of about 105,000 bushels of soybeans crushed into meal and oil per day to unnamed industry sources. This is not a Cargill-confirmed or official facility figure. The same report said the plant was not receiving soybean truck deliveries on Tuesday, March 10; that was a contemporaneous status update, not a current delivery notice.

A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products.
