On October 6, 2015, Facebook announced plans for a third data-center building at its existing Forest City campus in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Site manager Keven McCammon described the added investment as “in excess of $200 million”—an announcement estimate, not a verified final project cost.

What Facebook announced in 2015

Facebook’s plan was to add a third data-center building at its Forest City campus, rather than establish its first North Carolina facility. The campus’s first building had broken ground in 2010; at the time of the announcement, the site had two primary data-center buildings and a cold-storage data center, according to Data Center Knowledge’s October 6, 2015 report.

McCammon, Facebook’s Forest City site manager, said the new building would represent an additional capital investment “in excess of $200 million.” That figure describes the planned addition as announced, not an independently audited amount spent or the building’s confirmed final cost.

What the building was expected to contain

The 2015 report said the building would use the latest hardware designs from the Open Compute Project (OCP), a Facebook-led open-source hardware and data-center design initiative. It did not specify server, storage, or networking models, so the announcement does not support claims about particular equipment.

What the figures say—and do not say

McCammon was reported as saying the campus had 125 full-time employees at the time. That is a 2015 campus staffing figure, not a current headcount or a count of jobs attributable solely to the third building.

Meta’s current U.S. data-center locations page lists Forest City with more than $750 million in aggregate campus investment and more than 275 operational jobs supported once complete. Those are campus-level figures; they cannot be assigned to the third building or treated as a direct update to its announced cost. North Carolina’s 2010 announcement also places the original data-center site near Forest City in Rutherford County.

What is not established

The 2015 report documents a plan, but the sources cited here do not establish the third building’s completion date or final project cost. The announcement’s “in excess of $200 million” should therefore remain an attributed estimate from 2015, rather than being presented as the verified amount ultimately spent.
