What Currency Is Accepted in the Caribbean? A Destination-by-Destination Guide

Caribbean currency rules vary by destination. Check the local legal tender, whether businesses accept U.S. dollars, the rate they offer, and card acceptance before you travel.

There is no single currency or payment rule for the Caribbean. The currency you can use depends on the island or territory, and a published exchange-rate peg does not require every shop or service to accept U.S. dollars. Check the rules for your destination and confirm payment options with the businesses you plan to use.

Which currencies are used in the Caribbean destinations covered here?

This is a sample of destinations with official guidance available, not a complete list of the Caribbean. Do not assume a neighboring island follows the same currency or acceptance rules.

Destination Local currency or legal tender What official guidance says about other payments
Anguilla Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$), legal tender The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank lists EC$2.70 per US$1. Its Anguilla page does not establish that businesses generally accept U.S. dollars. Eastern Caribbean Central Bank
Antigua and Barbuda Eastern Caribbean dollar Official host-country travel tips say U.S. dollars are “widely accepted,” but that does not guarantee acceptance at every business or a favorable conversion rate. Antigua and Barbuda travel tips
Dominica East Caribbean dollar The Dominica Citizenship by Investment Unit says euros and dollars are accepted as legal tender and lists US$1 = EC$2.70. Since this is not a tourism or central-bank source, confirm practical payment arrangements with your providers. Dominica Citizenship by Investment Unit
Grenada Eastern Caribbean dollar The Grenada Tourism Authority says U.S. dollars are accepted. It says hotels and car-rental firms accept major credit cards; this does not establish card acceptance at all businesses. Grenada Tourism Authority
Barbados Barbados dollar (BBD), the only legal tender Some businesses may take other currencies, but they are not required to. Commercial banks exchange U.S., Canadian, and Eastern Caribbean dollars, pound sterling, and euros, according to the Central Bank of Barbados. Central Bank of Barbados currency FAQs
Curaçao and Sint Maarten Caribbean guilder (Cg) The joint central bank lists an official rate of Cg 1.79 per US$1. That rate does not establish that every merchant accepts U.S. dollars. Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten

Should you bring U.S. dollars?

U.S. dollars may be useful in some destinations, but the official guidance is not uniform. Antigua and Barbuda describes them as widely accepted, and Grenada says they are accepted. By contrast, the Anguilla source confirms the local legal tender and its rate against the U.S. dollar but does not say that businesses generally take U.S. notes. Barbados is explicit that its dollar is the only legal tender and that businesses are not obligated to accept another currency.

For Barbados, the Central Bank’s currency FAQs draw a clear distinction between legal tender and a business choosing to accept foreign cash. A currency’s value or peg is not the same as a merchant’s obligation to take it.

What do the published exchange rates tell you?

Officially published rates help explain the relationship between currencies, but they do not promise what a particular merchant, bank, or exchange counter will offer you. Check the rate and the currency in which you will receive change before completing a cash transaction.

  • Barbados: The Central Bank of Barbados explained in 2021 that the Barbados dollar has a fixed relationship of BBD 2 per US$1. This does not require businesses to accept U.S. currency. Central Bank of Barbados
  • Anguilla: The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank lists EC$2.70 per US$1. The publication year is not stated on the cited page. Eastern Caribbean Central Bank
  • Dominica: The Citizenship by Investment Unit page lists US$1 = EC$2.70; its publication year is not stated. Confirm practical exchange and payment terms with your providers. Dominica Citizenship by Investment Unit
  • Curaçao and Sint Maarten: The joint central bank lists Cg 1.79 per US$1 on a page last updated October 1, 2026. Centrale Bank van Curaçao en Sint Maarten
  • Grenada: The Tourism Authority FAQ lists EC$2.67 per US$1 for cash and EC$2.68 per US$1 for travelers’ cheques. These are figures printed on the FAQ, not guaranteed current rates at every bank or merchant. The authority advises exchanging at banks. Grenada Tourism Authority

Can you use a credit card?

Card acceptance depends on the destination and business. The Grenada Tourism Authority says hotels and car-rental companies accept major credit cards. That guidance does not establish that cards will work at other Grenada businesses or across the Caribbean. Ask your hotel, transport provider, tour operator, and other expected payees which cards and payment methods they accept.

How to prepare before you travel

  1. Identify the exact destination. Confirm its local currency and legal-tender rules through its central bank or official tourism or government guidance; do not apply one island’s rules to another.
  2. Ask each important provider how you can pay. Check with your lodging, car-rental company, tour operator, and transport provider whether they take your card or foreign cash.
  3. Confirm the transaction terms. If paying in a foreign currency, ask what exchange rate applies and what currency you will receive as change. A published peg is not necessarily the rate a business uses.
  4. Plan where to exchange cash. Check whether official guidance identifies banks or other exchange options. In Grenada, the Tourism Authority advises exchanging at banks.
