Curevo Raised $60 Million in 2022 to Test a Shingles Vaccine Against Shingrix

Curevo announced a $60 million Series A financing in February 2022 to fund clinical development of an investigational shingles vaccine. The money was not a trial result or the value of the company’s later agreement with Eli Lilly. Curevo subsequently reported Phase 2 results comparing its candidate with GSK’s Shingrix, and in May 2026 announced an agreement to be acquired by Lilly.

What did Curevo’s $60 million raise mean?

Curevo’s news archive dates its Series A financing announcement to February 10, 2022. The headline item, “Vaccine startup Curevo takes on pharma giant GSK, raises $60M for trial of shingles shot,” is dated February 11. The $60 million was announced as financing for clinical development, not as evidence that the vaccine worked or as an acquisition price.

The archive establishes the round and its purpose, but the available company material does not state the full financial terms. It therefore does not establish the investors, valuation, ownership dilution, or how much of the announced amount was ultimately spent on a particular trial. A Series A headline alone is not enough to calculate those details.

What is Curevo’s shingles vaccine?

Curevo’s candidate, originally called CRV-101 and later assigned the non-proprietary name amezosvatein, is an investigational vaccine. Curevo describes it as a non-mRNA, adjuvanted subunit vaccine using the varicella zoster virus glycoprotein E antigen. The company says its adjuvant targets the TLR4 pathway.

That description distinguishes the candidate’s design from a commercial product: amezosvatein is not approved or available to patients in the sources reviewed. Shingrix, by contrast, is the FDA-listed GSK recombinant adjuvanted zoster vaccine. FDA indications cover adults aged 50 and older, as well as adults aged 18 and older at increased risk because of immunodeficiency or immunosuppression.

How did amezosvatein compare with Shingrix in Phase 2?

In a January 7, 2024 announcement, Curevo reported topline results from a randomized, controlled, observer-blind Phase 2 comparison in adults aged 50 and older. The company said 876 participants were randomized: 619 across amezosvatein dose groups and 257 to Shingrix. Both were given on a two-dose schedule, with doses two months apart.

Measure Amezosvatein Shingrix What the result represents
Participants randomized 619 across candidate dose groups (Curevo, 2024) 257 (Curevo, 2024) Phase 2 trial allocation reported by Curevo
Vaccine response rate at the Day 84 immunogenicity endpoint 100.0% (Curevo, 2024) 97.9% (Curevo, 2024) Company-reported antibody-response measure; not a direct measure of protection against shingles
Grade 2 or 3 reactogenicity that interfered with or prevented daily activities at the selected dose 7.3% for 100 μg antigen/15 μg SLA-SE (Curevo, 2025 update) 33.3% (Curevo, 2025 update) Company-reported selected-dose comparison; the statistical analysis was post hoc and unadjusted for multiple comparisons
Grade 3 solicited local or systemic events at the selected dose Zero reported (Curevo, 2025 update) Not stated in the cited Curevo update Solicited events are those actively collected during the trial’s diary period; the cited summary does not give a comparable Shingrix value for this measure
Regulatory status Investigational in Curevo’s program materials FDA-approved for specified adult groups (FDA) Different development and regulatory stages

Curevo said amezosvatein met the trial’s Day 84 immunogenicity and safety/tolerability co-primary endpoints. The company’s reported response rates and tolerability findings are Phase 2 results announced by Curevo; they do not establish regulatory approval or definitive comparative clinical efficacy. The 7.3% versus 33.3% comparison concerns the selected dose and a post-hoc analysis, not the trial’s primary endpoint.

What did the later follow-up show—and not show?

In January 2025, Curevo reported that anti-gE antibody levels at Day 421 were non-inferior in the 50–69-year-old subgroup receiving the selected dose. This is a specific antibody comparison at a stated time point and in a defined subgroup; it is not proof that the candidate prevents shingles as well as Shingrix.

The same update described a post-hoc case analysis with mean follow-up of 18.8 months. Curevo reported no confirmed shingles cases in the highest-antigen-dose amezosvatein groups or the Shingrix group, and one case in a low-dose amezosvatein group. That low-dose group had previously been found immunologically inferior and was discontinued for Part B. The small number of cases cannot establish comparative vaccine efficacy.

What happened after the Phase 2 comparison?

In June 2025, Curevo announced that enrollment had begun in a Phase 2 extension targeting 640 adults aged 50 and older, including adults over 70. The company said the extension would assess immunogenicity, reactogenicity, and safety to help finalize dose selection before Phase 3. The enrollment announcement does not establish that the extension has been completed.

On May 26, 2026, Curevo announced it had entered a definitive agreement to be acquired by Eli Lilly and Company. Curevo’s current website identifies it as a wholly owned Lilly subsidiary. The available sources do not establish the transaction’s exact closing date or terms, so the 2022 $60 million financing should not be confused with the later Lilly deal.
