He has also recalled taking a hands-on role at Microsoft in its early days, reviewing code and interviewing job applicants. These are useful clues to his approach—not proof that any one trait caused Microsoft’s success or a formula every entrepreneur can copy.
What are Bill Gates’ entrepreneurial characteristics?
The evidence points to two related but distinct parts of Gates’s story: his stated personal orientation and his reported operating behavior. The first concerns how he says he engaged with ideas; the second, how closely he involved himself in early technical work and hiring.
| Dimension | What Gates has said or done | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Personal orientation | He described himself as curious, widely read, energetic and optimistic about pursuing ideas. | A firsthand account of how he approached learning and possibilities. |
| Operating behavior | He recalled reviewing every line of code and interviewing every job applicant in Microsoft’s early days. | An example of close technical and hiring involvement at an early stage. |
Neither account independently measures entrepreneurial ability, compares Gates with other founders, or establishes that these behaviors caused a particular business outcome.
Curiosity, reading and optimism
Speaking at Blacks at Microsoft Minority Student Day, Gates reflected: “I loved to read a lot, I was very curious, and so I just kept pursuing that curiosity with a lot of energy and a lot of optimism that neat things might happen.” The statement appears in a Microsoft-published speech transcript.

His recollection connects curiosity with an active habit: continuing to pursue questions and ideas. Reading, in that account, is part of how he engaged with the world, while energy and optimism describe the attitude he says he brought to that pursuit. Because this is Gates’s retrospective self-description, it should be read as his account rather than an independent assessment of his personality.
Hands-on technical leadership and hiring
Gates also recalled: “In the early days, I liked to review every line of code, to interview every job applicant.” He made the remark in a Microsoft-published speech on technical leadership.

This offers a specific example of direct involvement in both the product and the people building it. The phrase “in the early days” matters: the recollection does not establish that Gates kept personally reviewing all code or interviewing every applicant as Microsoft grew, nor does it show that the same approach would suit a larger organization.
How these traits fit Gates’s career
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation identifies Gates as its chair and a board member, and says he co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975. Those facts provide context for the stages of his work; they are not themselves evidence of particular personality traits. His early technical and hiring involvement belongs to Microsoft’s early period, while his current foundation role is a different chapter.
The foundation’s own history says it was founded in 2000, after Bill and Melinda Gates began looking for ways to give back as Microsoft wealth grew. That is the organization’s account of its origins, not an independent evaluation of the foundation’s impact.
What this can—and cannot—tell aspiring entrepreneurs
Gates’s accounts can suggest practices worth considering, but they do not amount to a validated success formula. A reader might take away the value he placed on following curiosity and the attention he says he gave to technical work and hiring in Microsoft’s early days. The evidence does not show how much each contributed to Microsoft’s results or establish that copying them will produce similar outcomes.

In particular, close oversight may be possible in a small early operation but cannot be assumed to scale unchanged. The sources offer no comparative evidence ranking these characteristics against those of other entrepreneurs.

For readers interested in his early life, Penguin Random House lists Bill Gates’s memoir Source Code: My Beginnings, published February 4, 2025, at 512 pages. The publisher’s listing describes a memoir focused on his beginnings and personal story. It is an optional firsthand account of his early years, not a complete history of his later business career.
