An RBI repo-rate hike can put upward pressure on fixed deposit (FD) rates, but it does not automatically make every bank raise every rate by the same amount—or at the same time. Banks set deposit rates in response to their own funding needs, competition, liquidity and preferred deposit tenures. For savers, the practical rule is to compare the bank’s current rate card and terms rather than try to calculate an FD rate from the repo rate alone.
The latest RBI rate-table snapshot available here is dated June 30, 2026: it lists a 5.25% policy repo rate and domestic term-deposit rates of 6.00%–6.60% for deposits over one year. Those figures are not October 2026 rates. An alleged October 7, 2026 rate hike could not be confirmed from an official RBI announcement, so its existence and details should not be assumed.

How a repo-rate hike can affect FD rates
The repo rate is a policy rate that influences the broader cost and availability of funds. When it rises, banks may face more pressure to attract or retain deposits, especially if credit demand is strong compared with deposit growth. One response can be to offer higher FD rates to savers.

A one-percentage-point increase in the repo rate does not mean every FD rate will rise by one percentage point. Banks have different funding positions and compete for deposits in different ways. They may change some tenures but not others, revise rates at different times, or leave rates unchanged if their funding needs do not call for a change. The RBI’s reporting on the first half of 2024–25 noted deposit-rate adjustment amid persistent credit demand and a widening gap between credit and deposit growth.

Rate transmission is tracked empirically across products rather than presumed to be immediate or uniform. For example, the Government of India’s Economic Survey 2025–26 reports that weighted average lending rates on fresh rupee loans declined by 64 basis points to 8.71% in November 2025. That is a lending-rate statistic, not an FD-rate estimate; it illustrates why a policy move should not be translated directly into a predicted deposit rate.
In practice, the path from a policy decision to a particular FD offer depends on the bank’s own position. A bank seeking more deposits may have a reason to compete for savers; a bank with less immediate need for funding may not respond in the same way. Even within one bank, the rate offered for one tenure or eligible customer category can differ from another. A repo-rate change is therefore a signal to check offers, not a promise of a specific increase.
What the available rate figures do—and do not—show
The RBI’s rate table snapshot dated June 30, 2026 lists the policy repo rate at 5.25% and domestic term-deposit rates over one year at 6.00%–6.60%. The deposit range is a reported market range, not a promise that a particular bank, customer or tenure will receive a rate within it today.
These figures do not confirm a later October 2026 policy decision. The claimed October 7 hike, including its size and any accompanying guidance, remains unverified by an official RBI MPC statement. Check the RBI’s official policy releases for a dated decision before treating the claim as established. Do not use the June 30 snapshot as though it were a current October rate card.
The date matters because both policy rates and individual bank offers can change. The RBI’s aggregate rate information gives context at a stated point in time; it does not tell you the rate a bank will offer when you open an account later, or what rate applies to your specific deposit amount and terms. Before relying on a headline or a comparison, check that its effective date is clear and that the information is from an official RBI release or the bank’s own current rate card.
Will FD rates go up after an RBI repo-rate hike?
They may, but the answer depends on each bank’s need for funding and its competitive position. If a bank wants to bring in deposits, it might raise rates, particularly on selected tenures or customer categories. Another bank may not need to act, or may make a smaller or later change. The timing and size of any pass-through cannot be inferred from the repo move alone.

For an actual decision, use the bank’s rate card in force when you apply or book. Confirm the rate for your exact tenure, deposit amount and eligibility, and check the booking terms. A policy announcement is a reason to pay attention to offers, not a substitute for checking them.

Should you wait to open an FD?
There is no assured benefit to waiting for a rate increase: a bank may raise rates, leave them unchanged or revise only certain tenures, and the timing is uncertain. If you need a known return or a particular maturity date, compare available offers now against your cash-flow needs instead of basing the decision on a predicted policy move.
Waiting is a choice under uncertainty, not a guaranteed way to secure a better rate. A future offer could be higher, unchanged or different only for a tenure that does not suit your plans. Consider when you need the money, how long you are willing to lock it away and whether the payout schedule works for you. The policy-rate move alone cannot answer those questions or establish the eventual return.

- Deposit amount and exact tenure. Compare the same principal and term, rather than a headline rate from a different maturity period.
- Interest payout or compounding. Establish whether interest is cumulative and compounded or paid periodically, and how often any periodic payment is made. The cash-flow pattern and maturity proceeds differ.
- Customer category. Check whether you qualify for a senior-citizen rate or another category-specific offer; do not compare a rate available to one category with a rate available to another as though eligibility were identical.
- Withdrawal terms. Confirm whether premature withdrawal is available and what rate adjustment or penalty the bank’s terms provide. A higher headline rate may come with a different exit condition.
- Minimum and maximum deposit. Check the product’s amount limits and whether the rate being advertised applies to the amount you plan to place.
- Tax treatment. Consider the tax effect on interest and the after-tax amount you expect to receive. A pre-tax headline rate is not the same as an after-tax return.
- Effective date and booking terms. Confirm the rate card is current and the offered terms will apply to your booking.
Headline annual rates can mislead when these terms differ. A periodic-payout deposit and a cumulative deposit, for example, do not have the same cash-flow pattern; compare the maturity or payout amounts under the actual terms rather than comparing the headline rate alone. A useful comparison records the bank and product, rate-card date, tenure, general rate and any eligible senior-citizen rate, payout choice, amount limits, premature-withdrawal availability and penalty, and projected maturity amount.

There is no specific live bank offer in the figures cited here, so a bank-by-bank ranking or maturity-value example would not be reliable. For a meaningful projection, use the principal, exact term, payout or compounding option, product terms and tax assumption that apply to you. Verify those inputs with the bank before booking; do not substitute the RBI’s market range for an individual quote.
What happens to an existing fixed-rate FD?
A later change in the RBI’s policy rate does not itself rewrite an existing fixed-rate FD contract. The rate on an FD already booked is ordinarily the contracted rate through maturity. A bank’s new rate card generally applies to new bookings, not retroactively to an older fixed-rate deposit.
That means an existing depositor should not expect a higher rate simply because the repo rate rises. The relevant question is whether the value of switching—after accounting for exit costs, taxes and the need for liquidity—outweighs keeping the original deposit.

Check the terms of your own deposit rather than assuming that a new offer changes an older contract. The rate and other conditions already agreed for a fixed-rate FD ordinarily remain in place until maturity, subject to the product’s terms. If the rate card has since improved, that new offer is not automatically applied to the amount you already deposited.
Before breaking an FD to reinvest
Premature withdrawal can reduce the return you actually earn. RBI guidance says the interest calculation for a prematurely withdrawn deposit is based on the rate applicable to the amount and period the money was actually held, rather than automatically preserving the original contracted rate. A bank’s disclosed penalty rules may reduce the return further.
- Ask the bank for the premature-closure calculation. Confirm the rate applicable to the amount and completed holding period, any penalty, and the net proceeds you would receive. Do not estimate the exit value using only the original contracted rate.
- Get the replacement FD’s exact terms. Confirm its rate, tenure, compounding or payout choice, eligibility and early-withdrawal conditions. Check that the quoted rate is in force for the date and deposit amount you intend to book.
- Compare the incremental return, not just the new headline rate. Account for the interest lost on closure, any penalty, tax on interest and the value of keeping access to your money. Compare the actual net proceeds and the new deposit’s expected payout under its terms.
- Check that the new term fits your plans. A replacement deposit may mature on a different date or have different withdrawal conditions. A higher quoted rate alone does not establish that the switch is suitable if you may need the money sooner.
- Switch only if the net benefit suits your needs. A higher new rate may not compensate for the lost interest or reduced liquidity, especially if the replacement deposit has a different term.
Do not assume that a better rate advertised for a new FD will apply to the full original principal for the full new tenure. The bank’s closure calculation and the new product’s booking terms determine the actual comparison. Before acting, ask for the net amount on closure and work out the replacement return using the exact deposit amount and term; the gap between headline rates alone is not the cost-benefit calculation.

Early-closure costs are product-specific. No universal penalty or one standard recalculation applies to every bank and FD, so check the bank’s disclosed rules for your deposit. If access to cash matters, include that liquidity value in the decision rather than focusing only on whether the replacement rate is higher.
How to use the RBI and bank information
Use the RBI’s policy page or the relevant official MPC statement to establish whether a policy change occurred and when it took effect. Use a bank’s own current rate card and deposit terms to determine the rate available to you. The RBI’s aggregate rate information can provide context, but it does not replace the bank-specific offer or calculate an individual FD’s maturity value.
The Economic Survey’s lending-rate data is also context rather than a forecast for deposit returns: its 8.71% figure concerns weighted average rates on fresh rupee loans in November 2025. It should not be read as an FD rate, a current bank offer or a prediction of the next deposit-rate change.
For a comparison that can support a decision, note the source and effective date for every offer. Put the same principal, tenure and payout method beside each other, then record any applicable customer-category rate, amount limits and early-exit terms. If an offer does not specify a condition you need to compare, confirm it with the bank rather than filling in the gap by assumption.
Finally, treat rate projections as estimates tied to stated product terms, not guarantees that a bank will offer the same terms at a later date. Check the live rate card immediately before publication or booking. Historical observations about how rates moved across products and periods explain the mechanism, but do not predict when or by how much any bank will reprice its FDs next.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will FD rates go up after an RBI repo-rate hike?
They can, because a hike can increase banks’ incentive to attract or retain deposits. But there is no automatic one-for-one pass-through: banks may change different tenures by different amounts, act at different times or leave rates unchanged. Check the current rate card for the exact offer.

Should I wait to open a fixed deposit after a repo-rate hike?
There is no assured advantage to waiting. Rates could rise, stay unchanged or change only for tenures that do not suit you. Compare current offers for your amount, tenure and payout needs, and weigh those terms against your cash-flow plans rather than relying on a predicted rate move.
Will my existing FD rate increase when the RBI raises the repo rate?
Ordinarily, no. An existing fixed-rate FD remains governed by its contracted rate through maturity, subject to its terms; a later bank rate card generally applies to new bookings. If considering early closure, ask the bank for the recalculated interest and any disclosed penalty before comparing a replacement FD.
What should I compare when choosing between FD offers?
Compare the same deposit amount and exact tenure, cumulative or periodic payout option, customer eligibility (including any senior-citizen rate), minimum and maximum deposit, premature-withdrawal availability and penalty, effective date and tax impact. Compare projected maturity or payout amounts using the actual terms rather than headline rates alone.

Does the June 30, 2026 RBI rate-table snapshot confirm an October 2026 hike?
No. The snapshot lists a 5.25% policy repo rate and domestic term-deposit rates over one year of 6.00%–6.60% as of June 30, 2026. It is not an October rate table, and the claimed October 7 hike was not confirmed by an official RBI MPC statement.
The Bottom Line
A repo-rate hike can put upward pressure on FD rates, but each bank decides whether and when to reprice its offers. Use a current, dated bank rate card to compare like-for-like terms; do not treat an aggregate RBI rate range or an unverified policy claim as a personal quote. Existing fixed-rate deposits ordinarily keep their contracted rate, and breaking one early can mean recalculated interest and a disclosed penalty. Compare the actual net exit proceeds, replacement return, tax effect and liquidity before switching.
