Amazon’s December 2024 agreement with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires company-wide ergonomic risk assessments, worker training and feedback channels, and ongoing compliance tracking at facilities under federal OSHA jurisdiction. OSHA announced a $145,000 penalty and a two-year agreement. The settlement resolved ergonomics cases—not OSHA’s separate investigation into possible concealment of injury rates and hazards.
What did Amazon and OSHA agree to?
On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a corporate-wide ergonomics settlement with Amazon.com Services LLC. OSHA said it resolved multiple cases arising from inspections at 10 Amazon facilities that began in summer 2022. The agreement covers fulfillment centers, sortation centers, delivery stations and other facilities within federal OSHA jurisdiction; it should not be read as a finding that every Amazon site had the same hazards.
The agreement combines company-level program duties with local assessments and implementation. OSHA described requirements for risk assessment, feasible controls, employee training and feedback, and tracking whether facilities comply. The executed Corporate-Wide Stipulation and Settlement Agreement sets out the terms.
What does the settlement require?
Corporate ergonomics work
Amazon’s corporate ergonomics team is to assess risks, identify and pilot engineering controls, support local facilities, and designate Site Ergonomics Leads. The company must track facility compliance with the program requirements.

Site assessments and updates
Site Ergonomics Leads review corporate assessments and prepare local ones. Assessments must be updated annually, or sooner when a change increases risk. Amazon is also to train site leads, safety and health staff, and employees.
Worker input and OSHA monitoring
Amazon must maintain multiple ways for employees to raise concerns and suggest potential solutions, including anonymous channels. OSHA and Amazon are to meet twice a year to discuss leading and lagging indicators, musculoskeletal-disorder injury trends, pilot projects, controls and program elements.

OSHA may conduct monitoring inspections at locations where it cited hazards, and the agreement gives the agency access to relevant documents and witnesses. OSHA says it may inspect and enforce under the Occupational Safety and Health Act if Amazon fails to meet the agreement or if OSHA believes additional feasible controls are likely to reduce ergonomic risk.
What safety measures did OSHA identify?
OSHA said the agreement memorialized measures already implemented at cited facilities. Examples included adjustable-height workstations, redesigned packing stations, conveyors, ergonomic mats, scanner harnesses, updated Go Carts, job rotation and a new sortation system. These are examples from workplace facilities, not recommendations for consumers to buy similar equipment.

How much did Amazon pay, and how long does the agreement last?
OSHA announced a $145,000 penalty and a two-year term. Either party may seek termination after the first year. The agreement’s duration and termination provision are distinct from OSHA’s ongoing monitoring and enforcement authority under its terms.
Did Amazon admit wrongdoing?
Amazon’s account says OSHA agreed to withdraw all but one of its previous ergonomic citations. The company characterized the settlement as involving no admission of wrongdoing and no directive to adopt new controls, writing: “There isn’t a claim of wrong-doing on Amazon’s part for the withdrawn citations, nor a directive to adopt new safety controls.” That is Amazon’s description of the agreement.

OSHA, by contrast, emphasized the corporate-wide obligations and its ability to monitor and enforce them. Its announcement described the agreement as focused on improving conditions for Amazon workers nationwide. These are the parties’ respective descriptions; Amazon’s characterization should not be mistaken for a neutral summary of every obligation in the agreement.

No. OSHA explicitly said the ergonomics agreement did not affect its ongoing investigation in the Southern District of New York into, among other things, possible concealment of injury rates and hazards. The settlement should not be described as resolving or adjudicating that separate matter.

In a January 2023 release, OSHA said inspections at three Amazon facilities found ergonomic hazards and that its review of required injury logs found high musculoskeletal-disorder rates. The agency also described struck-by hazards at the Florida facility. Those statements concern the inspected locations and OSHA’s findings there; they do not establish identical conditions at every Amazon facility.
What injury-rate changes has Amazon reported?
Amazon has published its own rate figures, which are company-reported metrics rather than independent confirmation of OSHA’s findings. In its December 2024 account of the settlement, Amazon said its U.S. recordable incident rate had improved 28% since 2019, its lost-time injuries 75%, and its recordable musculoskeletal-disorder rate 27%.
In a workplace-safety update published in 2026, Amazon reported the following changes over six years:

These figures come from Amazon’s later update, not an independent evaluation of the agreement. They do not isolate whether or how the settlement affected injury rates. Recordable incident rates and lost-time rates are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.
